Title: Svetnikov's Scribbles
Post by: Kieve on November 09, 2007, 04:04:26 pm
Well, I've browsed through here a few times, I draw... I figure why not post some of my craptastic sketchings?  :whistling:

To kick off, I tried drawing my PS-based alter-ego.
Since it's still a WIP, there's a lot yet to go, but here's a couple progress scans.
KRScan 01 (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/Random%20Cats/krs_scan01.jpg)
KRScan 02 (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/Random%20Cats/krs_scan02.jpg)
Quote
The Enkidukai before you appears young, perhaps no more than twenty or so. He stands a bit taller than the average Enki, and substantially leaner than most. His clothing consists of a simple dark-blue vest and a set gray-green leather trousers, both of which appear slightly singed. A simple black cord serves as his belt, with two worn sabres hanging securely from it. A faint tinge of acrid smoke clings to his fur, which appears groomed and well-kept despite his rugged appearance. A small set of round spectacles perch on the bridge of his muzzle, partially obscuring his hazel eyes.
For anyone wondering, the leather armor is intended to be tefusang hide, hence the described color and the little toothy spines.

Also, some older character studies, mostly for the heck of it...

You should definately continue with your drawing escapades :) You have a great sense for forms as well as their dynamic brethren. I do enjoy your comic-like style with a touch of attitude molded in neatly.

Keep artsying, lad! :)

Baldur - Thanks, you've got some interesting creations of your own.
Vexonee - :) Wish granted. Although I think you've already seen this next one...

...I realized that every felid I've posted up there is male. Well, to correct that imbalance, I present to you Rianna.

Critique if you like, but be kind. And yes, I know her tail is too long.

Wonderful scenery! You're really something! :D And, why, thank you on the subtle compliment .)
The latter picture somehow reminds me of the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Oh yes, you've created an Anti Aliasing effect of sorts which is quite snazzy! The shadows and colors look really nice. I don't see any changes need being made, just: Good Job and Well Done!

Baldur, if it reminds you of Oblivion, it's probably because the window frame and background scenery comes from Morrowind screenshots, and the "bloom" lighting gives it that Oblivion-like glow. (A photoshop trick that was pretty common for a while in the Morrowind character screenshot threads). I was actually really pleased with how she came out, overall - which is rare for me - and even moreso since it's the first "lineless" drawing I've tried. :D And again I thank you for the kind words. :)
Title: Precipice (Sketchy Stuff)
Post by: Kieve on November 15, 2007, 12:28:05 am
Precipice
Thunder rumbled through the mountains outside Akkaio - not the clap/boom of lightning, but the enraged growl of an ulbernaut as it lumbered forward. The young enkidukai under its gaze backpedaled swiftly, dull orange flames wreathing his left hand. Smoldering patches in the ulber's hide bespoke a battle that had already raged on for several minutes, but the massive beast's resilience was rapidly wearing out the mage's strength.
He took another step back, finding his paws on the edge of the bluff behind him. His eyes darted towards the sheer drop, then refocused on the looming ulbernaut. "So," he snarled wearily, "that's how it's going to be..." The flames surged brightly around his hand, coalescing into a seething orb of raw magical energies. Steeling his nerves, the enki forced his legs to move, and he hurled himself backwards off the precipice as the fireball flew from his hand.
The inferno struck the ulbernaut squarely in its chest, filling the air with the scent of seared fur and flesh. Bellowing with rage, the smoking beast flailed desperately with claws utterly useless for the purpose. Where it stumbled forward, the ground gave beneath its weight.
Sheer rock rushed by as the pair fell victim to gravity. The enki was not yet ready to die, however. His hands shot out, natural agility and instinct taking over as he sought a way to halt his rapid descent. For an instant, his knuckles were scraped bare and bloody against the cliff-face, but his fingers found purchase on an outcrop.
Though the ulbernaut howled its angry despair at him, the mage heard only a dull ringing as he slammed brutally into the rock. Warm blood leaked down his jaw from a new gash in his muzzle. His grip, however, was solid - though his arm ached horribly, he hadn't dislocated it.
He turned his gaze downwards, staring in silence at the crumpled heap at the cliff's base. Soon, the consumers would be along to erase what traces remained of their battle.

The enkidukai touched his free hand to his face, feeling the damp fur, the stinging wound beneath.

No. Not all traces...

Footnote: This is what happens when I have extra time at work. Some rough sketches, playing around with angles and dynamics. Hardly a finished set, but good practice, and I do intend to clean them up and complete them later on. Photoshop color works wonders, and these were greatly shrunk down from a 300dpi scan. At high resolution, I should have more than enough room to make each panel a full image unto itself... I look forward to trying, at least.

Good ilistrated story \\o//. I have not seen that many of them on the forums. Like your first drawing of your alter ego as well. For some reason I like him better without strips but thats just my opinion.

After some hard lessons and a week in the DR learning from them, Kieve returns to Yliakum a bit wiser, and far stronger than before...
Quote
This Enkidukai appears taller than average, and thin to the point of gauntness. He wears a dark burgundy long-coat, unbuttoned, its sleeves rolled up to the elbow. Around his upper arms are silver bands, studded with narrow shards of ruby crystal. Beneath the coat, you catch sight of a thick leather chestpiece, also a shade of red but so dark it appears black at first glance, its edges rimmed with gleaming steel. A bright red cord serves as his belt, two long sabres of unique design strapped securely at his right. Silver-rimmed spectacles perch on the bridge of his muzzle, partially obscuring his hazel eyes.

On closer study, you note a jagged scar beneath the fur at his throat, and another, more faded one through his left brow. What seemed to be emaciation is in truth the very essence of lean - as though a great forge had burned out every impurity in his form, leaving him as slender and tempered as the steel at his belt. A strong aura of magic surrounds him, evident as a red glow in your peripheral vision, or a warm tingle if standing too close. The color of his garb and the sense of magecraft suggests an Enki well-versed in the Red Way.

In fairness to the feline gender balance, some rough sketches of Rianna.
I found a few works by other artists that helped define her face a bit better and add a little more character and expression...

I make no secret that I favor felids. Especially the feline femme fatale. ;)
But today, I give you something a bit different.
A first look at the monstrosity that is Xathen Ut'Phaere, the subject behind my little RP event of the past week.
(http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/th_Xathen.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/Xathen.jpg)
It's a bit rough, as I don't typically do full-ink drawings like that, but as a concept I think it works.

*brushes off the dust*
Well, I know the taboo about dredging up old threads, but this one being mine, I hope I'll get a pass this once. ;)
For anyone who's noticed my extended absence - life grabbed me by the 'grumblies' rather hard. If there's an upside to any of that, it would be how nicely calm the last few weeks at work have been.
So calm, in fact, I started drawing again.

Victor DeLeon:
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/th_Victor.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/Victor.jpg)
I'm quite proud of this one, simply for the fact that he's a HUMAN. The first human I have drawn in... ever, actually, that came out decent.

Sydney Endicott:
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/th_SyFacialStudy.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/SyFacialStudy.jpg)(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/th_Sy.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/Sy.jpg)
The protagonist of my little artistic endeavor. You can locate a colored version of him here (http://kieve-krs.deviantart.com/) if you like.

Zoe:
(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/th_Zoe-FacialStudy01.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/Zoe-FacialStudy01.jpg)
Some early facial studies of Zoe. I sketched a full-character study, but I'm not particularly happy with it and will need to rework it at some point.

And the culmination of some of these efforts:
(http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/th_ms_0012-sample.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/MechaSentient/ms_0012-sample.jpg)
A color sample from an upcoming panel...

"Panel? Character studies? Protagonist? What's all this?" you think. (well, maybe somewhere in the back of your mind?)
Check here (http://mechasentient.comicgenesis.com) and all shall be answered.

Good drawings, but that's not really fan art, is it? Unless it's, like, a billion cycles into Yliakum's future... :P

Hey, your art is pretty good.

I'm particularly impressed by the Photoshop coloured picture of Rianna at the bay window. One suggestion I have for everyone that draws anthropomorphic animals is use reference photos and models (of course, it's a little difficult to get an animal to stay still long enough to model for you) when you draw and colour - it helps immensely.

You've got talent! Keep up the good work. ^_^

Heh, thanks everyone. ;)
Two points:
1) I'm not really 'back,' although I never quite left either. I'm just making an effort to pop in a little more frequently.
2) No Raa, it's not really fan-art. Just what I've been up to lately. In all honesty, I don't draw a whole lot of anything PS-related. Though I do hope to clean up that "Precipice" sequence at some point. ;)

Title: Rogue Akkaio (Part 1)
Post by: Kieve on July 23, 2008, 09:15:11 am
Rogue Akkaio (part 1)
The rapid padding of footsteps echoed from the sandstone walls of Akkaio's warehouse district.
A young Enkidukai dashed along its streets, his paws sliding over the dusty ground as he rounded the corner at a full run. Anxiously, he shot a glance over his shoulder, but for the moment there was no sign of his pursuer.
Reaching the ultic at the end of the row, he gripped its canvas edge and hauled himself onto the roof, bracing against the wall as he ascended. The scrape of boots on stone was the only warning he had that the rogue had found him.
A dagger hissed through the air, burying itself in the canvas by his hand. The Enkidukai went still for a moment, staring at it with a mix of surprise and annoyance.
A snarl rose in his throat. "This is getting old, fast," he growled. His hand closed around the dagger's hilt.
Whirling, he pulled it from the canvas and sent it whizzing back at the approaching rogue, but his skill with short blades was poor and the dagger sped harmlessly over his foe's shoulder.
The rogue watched its passage, giving a mocking laugh at the attempt. His amusement soured as he watched the Enkidukai leap onto a neighboring rooftop, disappearing from sight.
"Miserable furball," the black-clad figure grumbled, grabbing a hold of the ultic's edge. "Gonna make me chase you all over Akkaio to finish off your stripey hide..."

(To Be Concluded...)

Footnote: The title is silly, but I kept it because I like wordplay and multiple meanings.
Thanks: Eliseth, for the suggestion/request. Anumesa, for showing me how to get onto Oja's rooftops.

Title: Rogue Akkaio (Part 2)
Post by: Kieve on July 31, 2008, 12:19:03 am
Rogue Akkaio (part 2)
The black-clad rogue chewed impatiently on his lip as he scanned the rooftops.
The Akkaio furball had disappeared from sight, but it wasn't difficult to guess where he'd gone.

His cloth-wrapped feet padded quietly over the stone buildings, but he was unable to keep the canvas ultic from creaking under his weight.
Which suited him just fine - he heard the nervous shifting below, the slight groan of planking as his quarry moved.

"C'mon out, you little kikiri-turd," the rogue snarled under his breath. "I promise I'll make it quick..."
The bright crystal light made seeing into the ultic's depths troublesome. Muttering an oath, the rogue gripped his dagger tightly and dropped down into the tent's interior.
Immediately, the shadows faded against a flickering orange light, a torch someone had lit behind him.

Good, he thought. Makes 'em easier to see.
The amusement died under the weight of the Enkidukai's growl...
"I'll make this quicker," the mage snarled from behind the rogue, flames curling from his fist.
The rogue barely managed a half-turn before the blast of fire hurled his smoking body from the tent, embers trailing from incinierated cloth and flesh.
With smug satisfaction, Kieve brushed the ash from his hands and slid closed the canvas door of his ultic.

The "fiery" conclusion!

Text, for those having difficulty reading it:
I've been away too long...
...When sharing philosophies about life's journeys,
the philosophers overlook the element of Time...
...But Time is precious, easily lost, and impossible
to regain. I squandered it on this last sojourn...
Some say 'absence makes the heart grow fonder,'
but I wonder if their lovers shared this opinion...
...To mine, I pledged my heart, mind, body, and
the whole of my being...
...And then vanished into the wild with barely so
much as a goodbye kiss...
...Was it foolish for me to hope that her feelings
had endured in my absence?
I have never seen her angry. I cannot imagine
what her ire or scorn would be like.
Truthfully, my deepest wishes were always for
her happiness...
...Even so, I would welcome her wrath with
open arms...
...If only it meant seeing her once more...

Footnote(s): I almost didn't post this, afraid that perhaps the one scene was too risque. Be kind.  :-[
Extensive use of screenshots and reference for this one, hence the higher level of detail.

Eliseth, after your comment my first thought was "Random Ninja Attack!"
->several ninjas drop from Kada's ceiling.
->Kieve turns around - "WTF? PS doesn't HAVE ninjas!"
->Ninjas look at each other...
"We're in PlaneShift?"
"Aw man, this was supposed to be the set for Gaiden II!"
"C'mon guys, let's go. If we hurry, we might make the tryouts for the next Tekken sequel."

And Parallo, Sade is someone else's character - I wouldn't dare embarrass her in that manner.

And now for something a bit different.

(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/PlaneShift/th_bathing_fenki.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/PlaneShift/bathing_fenki.jpg)(http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/PlaneShift/th_bathing_fenki_shy.jpg) (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f321/Kieve/PlaneShift/bathing_fenki_shy.jpg)

(That risque enough, Parallo?)

A few explinations:
1) No, I did not create a nekkid patch for the Akkaio fenki (or any other, for that matter) - as a matter of texturing, I create a base skin before applying any clothing layers.
2) No new animations were used in the making of these pics. Just a lot of photo-chop tricks and some technology beyond the scope of mere mortals. ;)

Hehe, actually I picked the fountain for two reasons: a recognizeable location, and it being the most convinient source of water I could find at the time.

Why not e.g. the "Pool of Stealth"... should be recognisable too. And there is a "cliche reason" for undressing (clothes won't become invisible).

Title: Re: Returning
Post by: Edig on September 16, 2008, 09:21:52 pm

Thanks to "Lhaa" for providing the spark of inspiration. And to Sade, for providing the memories...

Fancy. =o I'm curious, how many polys is it? Looks quite detailed. :)

Oh and what program did you use?
Title: Re: Svetnikov's Scribbles
Post by: Kieve on November 08, 2008, 04:21:05 am
3DSMax v5. Total scene polycount is roughly 60k right now, although as you can see there's still a great deal of detailing left on the hull and side pylons - not to mention the entire interior still needs to be fleshed out (right now it's an empty box)

Additionally, it's referred to as "flight test" because the initial idea for the anim was to do a preflight check - test the airbrakes, vents, and other control surfaces, then retract the landing struts (not shown, due to incompleteness), and give it a brief run. Total expected animation time is somewhere around the 4-minute mark.

Title: Re: Svetnikov's Scribbles
Post by: Kieve on December 25, 2008, 04:55:42 am
The idea stemmed from a discussion on IRC around... hm, according to my logs, 12:30-ish (am). So, between 12:30 and 6am = Five and a half hours? Not a record, but not bad I guess. Still seeing a few things (like the candle base) I ought to have cleaned up and smoothed out... but ah well.

Thanks for the comments everyone. :) Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good- *zzzz...*

EDIT: Make that 4 hours or so. Forgot there was another PS task I was working on before I started this, so I didn't actually get to begin on it until around 2.

Some recent artsing to pass the time at work.
1) Not happy with the fireball, but I promised myself I wouldn't muck with the image beyond some photoshop cleanup. Added a little blur to emphasize the "sliding down" effect.
2) Rianna again. Had to fix her eyes with a PS brush, since for some reason I seem incapable of drawing them decently freehand anymore.

Post by: Baldur on January 25, 2009, 02:42:31 pm
Awesome, mate :) Kerol'll be just as radiant today as he is on this render! It turned out really well. I especially liked the way you handled the hair, most would've made it a half-assjob but you really succeeded in showing what it should be doing, not that I've ever seen anyone shoot out a beam of pure energy... :) I also love how you contrasted the details in the hammer and made it look like the hammer had been built, with golden goodness...

I would've upped the contrast on the character just to test how it would look but I'm guessing you've already done that and realized that the hammer is, after all, all that's needed.

I can sit and stare at this for at least 5 more minutes...

Played around with PNG transparency. Photoshop is a bit tempermental about it, but I like the end result.
Should've cleaned up the armor a bit more though, I still see polygons.
Debating on whether I should try adding hair and lowering/adjusting the eyebrows.

Hey scholar... you seem to have convincing arguments. :)

(The ears may be a bit too round...)

BTW: I think I know WHERE this Fenki is. I hear whispers...

Thanks to you both :)
I did poke around at the av a little more, and Ligh you're right about the ears. Will need to fix those.
Hair is a no-go though, it just looks wrong.

UPDATED: Fixed the brows & facial patterns, smoothed out the armor as well. Ears stay as-is. I looked over my reference photos, and tiger ears are in fact quite round.

A little sample of something I've been working on...

But what could it be, this towering beam of light...?

:D

It's a bird! It's a plane! NO! It's a laser-beam...TALAD!

I don't mind the ears. Actually, if all furskins looked like that, I would not hate them quite as much. :)

Thread Necro! My regrets at posting this, but I suppose it belongs somewhere.

My days working with PS in any official capacity are through.
It was at times fun, frustrating, fruitful, and always enlightening.
Alas, there is nothing more I feel I can contribute to PlaneShift.
There are those of you who will never be too far from my thoughts, and if anyone wishes to they may always contact me through PM or the link in my sig.
(I get email notifications in both cases)

Ah well. One last art for the road. :) Enjoy.

What a shame, Kieve... We will miss you, your support was greatly appreciated.

I hope, before you completely leave, you could at least close the Portrait Contest, or nominate people who should...

Thanks for the comments.
(And no, Raa, she didn't quit)

Something a bit different now - not PS-related, exactly, but worth showing I guess.
Iota Mk2 Test Render (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pofogvtEpss)
Took approx. 4hrs to render - for 30sec/900 frames. God help me when the full scene is ready...

Good work, all of your work!

Question: is the nose of this hovertank a little inspired by the nose of a X-w!ng?

irishman, you know that "not working for PlaneShift" doesn't actually affect whether I make art, right? :P

Perlam: No, not in the least. The nose/cockpit area is actually more of a hybrid between freight train and truck. The video stops facing the front of the machine. What you're probably thinking of is the tail, which is used for steering (note the vertical exhaust fins as the camera passes behind). Also, thanks for reminding me about this since it's been years since I worked on the Iota.
