Title: Crashing upon "Initializing World"
Post by: Midivar on March 19, 2003, 10:00:36 pm
Hi,

I\'ve tried several times, with and without having run the updater. Using latest version from the site. The game just crashes after some harddisk activity during the \"Initializing World\" phase. In full screen mode it even reboots. All this happens in both OpenGL and Safe modes.

Machine: Pentium III 800Mhz
RAM: 192MB
Video: NVidia GeForce 3, 128MB
OS: Windows 98 SE
DirectX: 8.0
Version: latest with updater files

Think i just found our solution..
Lets try it out

FAQ
1. My game locks up when I connect. It just says \"Initializing world\" but Windows says it is not responding!

This is ok. On some machines, Planeshift believes it needs to recalculate the lighting, which can take up to 2 hours the first time you run. If you let it run to completion, it will load quickly every time after that.

also, you need to run the updater.  this happened to me and I tried to run the updater. Unfortunately, it said it needed some .dll file, so it couldn\'t do anything.  Look around the forum until you come to the page saying about the .dll file and download it. Put it in your PS folder and run the updater. THEN run the psclient and it should get you into the game in a jiffy.

I said it crashes. It doesn\'t freeze, it doesn\'t say \"not responding,\" the thing stops running. I did run the updater. I had to download and install a missing MSVCP70.DLL (if I recall correctly) for that, and the updater ran smoothly after that. The game didn\'t. It crashes. Every time. I mean what I say. I didn\'t mean it to say it hangs, because it doesn\'t. It crashes, as in \"General Protection Fault\" or \"Invalid Page Fault\" or something like it-- can\'t remember. Sorry about that.

Try running it from a DOS prompt and see if it list what is  causing the page fault. Then post it here.

For mine it works, but it does take a while, like maybe 2 to 4 minutes or so, but even after the first time that I\'ve run it, it still takes a long time to load.

Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?  ?(

It always takes 2-4 minutes on Win to load (could be more if you start swapping on disk)... for some reason on some linux boxes PS can load in around 20-30 seconds. It\'s a known issue, but we didn\'t yet find a solution.

Will do and I\'ll start poking around some more with it when I have the time to spare.

And, by the way, the old problem of the sound stuttering that was in the very first demo, is still here. The music is all screwy and stuff, but I suppose it can be fixed by editing the configuration files again. I just don\'t understand why it\'s not fixed out-of-the-box.

devs are working on the problem which is not due to PS but Crystal Space, the open source 3D engine we are using. It is being improved everyday, so we hope it will be fixed soon.

The fact it is crashing is more serious... there 2 solutions: the problem is not exactly the same, or it\'s using too much memory so it leads to a crash... Only time and work will tell us what\'s happening...  thank you for the feedback.

You are probably running out of RAM.

Buy more and it will work. :-)

It does that for me too, only is completely crashes my whole computer, as in two \"illegal operation\" error boxes, blue screens and finally restarting, and after that it has to check the whole disk for errors, and then it screws up my clock too (I think that\'s just the idiocy of my computer, PS really shouldn\'t affect my clock, but after I restart it says it\'s adjusted my clock for daylight savings time. It now says it\'s 11:45 PM when really it\'s about 5:30)

Before I play PS I close every single program with the exception of Explorer and Systray.

I have an AMD Duron Processor, Windows 98 second edition and 224.0 MB RAM.

I did have to do the thing with the DLL, and it seemed to update okay, but it still just did the same thing. Does this still just mean I need more RAM?

*kills computer*

Mine seems to be loading up a bit faster than normal for the past few times I tried it.  Maybe it\'s getting better, or I\'m just used to waiting..lol  :D

Looks like all of us on win98 are getting this error?

When I get to that part.. my screen goes out.. and I have to click reboot (clicking button on tower)

:\\

This is only when I use the OpenGL render.. (window & fullscreen)

If I use Safe mode it loads and I can *play*, the game just is really really slow.

sys:
433mhz
128ram
GeForce4 MX 440 64DDR (PCI)
win98 SE

ya i know, I need a new comp, I\'m saving up for a kick ass mobo for $140~ and a cpu 2.6ghz~ 512KB L2 for $150~

I have the same problem...
I waited for 8 minutes at Initialzing World, and nothing
happens (taskmanager sais not responding)

and aehm  .. my console output when starting

D:\\PlaneShift>psclient

no CEL env....

Warning failed to load `csjnging?;
..same for `cssgiimg? and `cswalimg?

D:\\PlaneShift>

I know that the CEL warning is not important.. but whats about the 3 .dll that are missing, is that normal too ?

I dont have very much RAM, so I will start the game
later, when I go out, maybe it will work when I come back ...

[edit]

Yeah runs now, just took veeeerrrrrryyyyyyyyyy long to start the first time....

next task is to compile linux version :)
