Title: Massive, unplayable lag
Post by: wlminter on November 14, 2007, 08:41:07 pm
I recently downloaded Planeshift, got through the tutorial with no problems, but as soon as I got into the real game the frame rate dropped to almost zero! I don't know what to do. I know it's not my computer, I could run World of Warcraft without any problems what-so-ever, but for some reason Planeshift just won't run properly.

I'm using a Macbook with Leopard installed. Here are some specs:

RAM: 1 Gb
Processor: 2 Ghz Intel core Duo
64 Mb of VRAM

Not sure exactly what video card it has, but like I said, I ran WoW with no problems. And I know that it's not my internet connection also. I don't know what type of connection it is, but it's fast. I downloaded the game in less than 20 minutes, and no other online games have any lag in them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd love to play this game, but I just can't the way it's running.

old or new macbook? open options and turn down the distance to about 100 or less it will be playable at that setting.

You will almost always have lag with an intel card in your macbook not much can be done there unless you get a macbook pro.

[tested this on the newest macbook with leopard with intel gma 3100]

Wow, that actually worked. I have the distance turned down to 100, and the game runs fine now. Still a bit laggy, but nothing too great.

On a side note, is there anyway to turn off weather? That will also help a lot.

there should be.  Weather is just particle effects, should be a way to disable those. I'll check into it if I get time.

There's a file in art/effects path called "raindrop.dds" Since it's not a .jpg or .png or any normal image file, it may be the whole file for rain. Or maybe the dds just means it's a dentist. ;D I'll see if removing that will disable rain... or make the game explode. definitely one of those though.

removing that file will make the rain checkerboard so that will not solve this. dds=direct draw surface another image format used in games
