Title: Editing other peoples books
Post by: Suvok on December 12, 2007, 04:11:23 am
In the recent release, the books have been changed so that people cannot edit other peoples books. That's good. Now no one can steal and vandalise people's work. But sometimes the author may want the people to be able to edit the book. Is it possible to add a checkbox or something to the book so that the author can decide whether others can edit or not?

This could be very helpful if you wanted to lend someone some paper or maybe if you want people to sign their name to a book.

I've thought about this and considered the following.

It should be perfectly possible to add something to a book someone else wrote, since it is possible in reality. However the addition from everyone but the original author would appear in a different, written font and its not possible to remove or change any of the original text. Maybe it could be possible to strike certain words through.

This change would both be more realistic and allows the creation of contracts, leaving notes, filling in names or adding signatures, etc.

There will probably be a separate book-item on which everyone can write. Acissej knows about this and will implement it when he feels like it ;)

I'm sorry to bring this up, but it's a real setback for us to not have public edition books. That type of books makes Guild organizing much more easy. What was wrong with having public and private books coexisting? There's also something that bothers me: signatures. One can't ever be sure of who made the book.

Would it be too hard (not being sarcastic, I'm actually asking) to add 2 check boxes to the books? One would decide if the Author wants it public or not, the other would decide if he wants his signature there. (Like a different colored text at the end where the person's name is automatically inserted if the check box is checked.)

This would make books soooo much better.

It could be also good for application forms (questions that need answers written by second person) i. e. as official guild, work or school application form.

Im not sure where you've been. but i remember specifically, during 4.03, that you could not  change a book that sombody else 'wrote' in, but they could give you an empty book, and from what i can see it still is that way now, so i dont know how recent, that recent release you speak of is :P

And adding to edditing sombody elses book, IC'ly you could rip a page out, write over words, write a line through it, ect.

I think they should let players be able to write in the books, but not erase the words already written in it.

If you use a pencil, then you can write and erase any book you've got. So there's the excuse for having books that can be written and erased, for those of you who need one.

And yeah, the option could be there right at the beginning. Makes no difference to me, as long as we get them come-on-everybody-lets-write- together-books.
