Title: Alchemy
Post by: Raa on December 18, 2007, 09:58:52 pm
How does alchemy work in Yliakum? I'm asking because, one, I'm curious, and two, there's a Kran who claims to be able to turn into a menki so he can maek lurv to a certain crazy fenki and have kids with her. So can a dev or someone clear this up?

That guy is what you'd call a roleplayer, someone who makes his char roleplay things. Sometimes you can't see these things, sometimes you can watch them on your screen. Alchemy isn't doable in an OOC way yet.

Those were my first thoughts too Donari. I think it is only roleplay and the Kran is using the Alchemy as a way to explain his transformation. Sounds like a really strange roleplay though .....

A roleplayer? How can you be a roleplayer if you don't pay attention to the settings? Just because alchemy hasn't been implemented yet doesn't mean he can twist this realm to his liking.

If anyone actually has a clue about alchemy, can they please say something?

Actually that is exactly what it means. He can create what he wishes until settings says otherwise. BTW this is the  Definition of Alchemy for Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemy) and Definition from dictonary (http://www.answers.com/alchemy&r=67). I think he is working with in the settings as far as I know, I don't see how he isn't. Maybe I am missing something? As I said in my last post, he is using alchemy to explain his transformation.

I think roleplaying out of settings isn't the right kind of roleplaying.

Other wise im going to roleplay being a ynwnn dwarf with a klyros head who lays trepor eggs in the corpses of his fallen enemies.

If ya don't mind...

Zorbels, I know what alchemy is, but it may be different in Yliakum. If it's true that a Kran can turn into a menki and have offspring witha fenki, that sort of clashes with the settings. By the way, we aren't exactly talking about a "great" roleplayer here, if you know what I mean. Basically alchemy is his excuse to achieve his desires.

Winner. :P

Unless the guy can explain himself in COMPLETE detail, I really don't think he should be able to just go "hey, watch me! I can turn into an enki! *poof*"

Well from personal experience in PlaneShift my story actually has this sort of thing going on in the begining. Stronith (My RL Husband) was a kran in game. We couldn't get married because the gods wouldn't allow a Kran and Frenki to marry (Also at the time the marriage command wouldn't allow it, still not sure if it does or doesn't .. I haven't bothered to test that yet.). So we begged the god Talad to transform Stronith from a Kran to a Menki. Stronith to this day remains a menki but has the eyes of a Kran. He also has some of the traits Krans have, and some from menki. I never thought to get Zorbels with a child but if she did I would roleplay it as the Menki part of Stronith who had got Zorbels with a child.  Or perhaps that the gods had blessed us and allowed us to reproduce, or something along those lines.

The only difference between this "Kran's" Rping and mine are, I used the gods as a reason. He uses alchemy. Poor roleplayer or not, he is trying. If he is doing what Suno has just posted well then his roleplay is weak and he will find others will not want to play with him due to his lack of imagination. Until you can point out to me how he is abusing the settings I am not sure he is.

[Edit] I forgot to mention that when stronith was turned into a menki ... he physically really was by Talad. If this "Kran" is turning into a menki one minute and then a kran the next  that seems abit unreasonable to me. I would think his body would need down time from the transformations.

Yep, he's doing that too.

Oh boy, sounds like we have a godmodder.  ::)

The answer is no. If you want to be another race, make a new character. Alchemy is not the answer. As far as I have seen, there is no support at all in the Settings for one race being turned into another perminantly. All changes are temporary magic tricks and illusions, and do not atually change what race your character is.

If you knew who, it more than sounds like.

al·che·my      /ˈælkəmi/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[al-kuh-mee]

1.   a form of chemistry and speculative philosophy practiced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and concerned principally with discovering methods for transmuting baser metals into gold and with finding a universal solvent and an elixir of life.
2.   any magical power or process of transmuting a common substance, usually of little value, into a substance of great value.

Turning a Kran into an Enkie seems to fit the bill :P

And he's not outside of the settings but, he's definetly not inside the settings either.  I'm sure Xillix or Jera will come and end the discussion soon.

Frankly, it's unrealistic RP... To undergo a change once is one thing, to be able to switch back and forth at will with no apparent side effects is godmodding. Much like if Phinehas could, conveniently, transform himself into an ulbernaut when the situation called for physical strength...

Hey guys, what's going on in this thread? :)

I wonder how many times I have to ask this before people start trying it: "Have you tried asking npcs about it?" We have five alchemists. They can all give you their take on it.

However, there is nothing in settings, and nothing in the way I perceive the definition of alchemy, that tells me alchemy can change a person's species.

There is too, remember April Fools Day 2005?  *grins*  The power of the Crystal allows for random mutation, and it happens every month :P

That's not alchemy, though. I repeat, did you ask the alchemists?

Thank you for making an apperance and setting us all straight. I shall make a mental note to check with the NPC's but thanks for the "For sure" answer, much appreciated. There I finally have my proof.
/me goes her marry little way

Shifting shapes is not completely changing genetics and becoming another creature. You could make yourself look like an ulbernaut, have the strength of an ulber, and smell like an ulber, but you are not going to be able to breed like an ulber.

End of story.
