Title: runs really slow?
Post by: jackal on January 19, 2008, 08:31:09 am
i just finished the tutorial and i really like the concept of the game, but it runs slow. i have a p4 1.6ghz, 512mb ram and a geforce 5600 256mb ram video card. is this enough to get good frame rates?

Your specs are really too low to get a good framerate. A processor like p4 1.6 ghz is quite outdated now, although just fine for PS. 512 MB RAM is enough for Planeshift, although 1 GB is highly preferable, especially if you're running Windows XP. It's probably the graphics card. The geforce 5600 is several years old and even the cheapest card on the market would now handily outperform it. Contrary to popular belief, the amount of VRAM (unless it's entirely too little) is one of the least important factors in a video card's performance, compared to clock speed, bus size, and what kind of port it uses (APG or PCI-e).

haha i've managed to run the game on a pentium 3 800mhz with 640mb ram and a geforce 3 ti 500 64mb, worked ok and i was actually able to walk at harns with the grass, slowly but it worked ;)
if you then call a p4 1.6ghz to low for ps... sigh no way xD

AMD64 DualCore, 2 GB RAM, GeForce 6800 GT -- and it is not at all fluid.

AMD Duron 800, 512 MB RAM, GeForce2 GTS 32 MB -- have to look down to my feet. With grass it is deadly at the plaza. It used to run smoothly in versions before, in 0.3.020 now the AM2 is as slow as the Duron used to be, at the plaza!

There is already a suspicion that concurrent lighting models (obvious during the day cycle flickers) let PlaneShift run with a pulled handbrake. A profiling together with CS experts is necessary.
