It's really increadible what you can do with css, far more than basing on classes and ids only.
Thx to this i started a userstyle based on the default Karyuu's skin.
Use only over default skin template
This style was done under Firefox 2.0, browser which to my knowledge reads css best. (though 3.0, which i don't use yet read it even better).
You can try this userstyle with Opera or oher browsers, which support userstyles too.
For firefox, instal the "stylish" add-on and paste this into new blank style window:
In this version (http://userstyles.org/styles/7377) position:fixed is absolute instead and the body background will no longer be visible when you scroll down. (by this you avoid scrolling glith)
Use this version (http://psgrafika.republika.pl/pscss/psforumremake) (old version) with position:fixed if you don't care about glithes.
{ I moved the code to the files linked above. }No screenshots, as you will know far better what you comment, when you viev it by yourself. Though feel free to make screenhots to describe your comments better.

Nice idea, Nikodemus,
I definitely love the greenish background-image!
What appears twisted and buggy is the frame being shifted to the left by the buttons-box on the right:
(http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/4811/bildschirmphoto12cf6.th.png) (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bildschirmphoto12cf6.png)
The bugginess is more clear when you have a look at my reply-window:
(http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/7034/bildschirmphoto13vr1.th.png) (http://img262.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bildschirmphoto13vr1.png)
I for one wouldnt mind to just have that button-box down on the page again, the page-indicator on the left side though is a fancy thing that I dont want to miss!
I am using Iceweasel (Firefox) 2.0.0.11 / Debian Sid
-
I have to say that is a really nice looking style
-
On my trial to find a compromise I deleted everything except for that background-image.
Nikodemus, mind to tell me how can I add the page-index to the left side? =P
-
What appears twisted and buggy is the frame being shifted to the left by the buttons-box on the right:
I see nothing wrong about that ;P
The bugginess is more clear when you have a look at my reply-window:
Coz the style not finished, but it will remain shifted.
Button-box and page indicator are as they are coz of position:fixed. While button box is right aligned with "right" property and page indicator is layed out by negative margin values.
Thank you for support!
P.S. code is art too.
-
Dont get me wrong, I tried for some time to fix the width of it=P And I am aware of it could only affect me (or at least not you), but I wouldnt have given these (obviously rather humble) efforts if I wouldnt love that theme!
-
No, you see everything as me (well except the key stats box, where bottom line everlays the border, but it is your browser bug as far as i can say, which comes out probably because your linux font is wider than windows verdana.
I will probably make a walkaround fix for that, thout it isn't happening coz of my style.
I also mean't that the frame is shifted on purpose ;P
-
lol alright, good chance its just my fault o/
I manually adjusted the font-size in my firefox - I didnt know the frames would dynamically adjust to font-size as well.
-
Hey everyone interested. I have updated the code in first post and will continue doing so till i finish.
There are some fixes, new changes and some new elements, which don't look right anyore ;P It will look better in the future, though.
I have forgotten to give some credits to Karyuu, for the great PS main site. I have started the style basing on its colors, images and the forum style, which she has been working on in the past.
I have a reguest.
I could now start making all the little images all around like (http://hydlaa.com/smf/Themes/PlaneShift/images/bbc/bold.gif), (http://hydlaa.com/smf/Themes/PlaneShift/images/english/help.gif) or (http://hydlaa.com/smf/Themes/PlaneShift/images/english/userinfo.gif), etc.
I'm not sure if there is as big rush as in the fan art (i think i have posted there in the start and someone moved it ::| ) But hopefully someone care about this. In the end if Acraig or any other forum admin want, this style can be put on the server.
These images can be any shape, really any shape, but when you think about it, think where you would like to see them - almost any place. Be creative, but think about ergonomy and the overal layout of the forum and as I edited it. Use .png with transparency, 16mln colors.
Probably why i wanted this project to be fan art first, but if people look there, it will be ok too i gues.
-
So, there are only two interested people?
If you use it, comment on it. I won't continue doing it alone if only 2 people tried it and maybe won't even use its most part.
-
Perhaps you could post some screenies for those who don't know how to install the style. That way you might get more comments. From what I have seen, it looks real nice. I hope you keep working on it.
-
I am currently on my Windows, hence not sure if it will be the same in my standard linux environment.
Some comments given as I look at the Firefox here:
The main-page "hydlaa.com" has white text on bright-gray background. Original black text looks better.
hte contrast of the green background to the brown ornament around the Planeshift topic is neat.
Hm, maybe I am wrong, but did you get rid of the underline of links, instead of added a little ps-like arrow to its left? however, without all the underlined text it has an overall more clean, tidied and professional look, the mouse-over arrows are a nice addition.
Okay, the threads now.. to me still the frames of single posts are still a bit shifted to the left (screenshots up there). That Firefox I am using at the moment is an unmodified install out of the box (screen res 1400x900), so it cant be a problem of my modified fint sizes.
I have to admit, now that I know that button-box on the right side, I could think of it as a useful mod, since theres no scrolling required for replying, marking to get notified etc.
I can only say, without the shifted posts, which provides a little unordered look (could show as "separating posts" as well), I would switch to the whole theme without hesitating!
Good work Nikodemus, and people, get moving and give it a try! \\o//
PS: Is there a way Opera, Safari or even msie users could use it too?
-
Dajoji, I'm not sure, did you make it to work or did you try?
I gave instructions, in the first post. Short one sentence, but it is what stylish is like. Plain simple.
On which part did you stop? If you did.
Velh provided two screenshots.
Velh, check the domain of the style. That's basically why. If anyone find how to change it, write. Yeah, hydlaa.com stylesheet isn't supposed to be changed at all, but unfortunately it is.
Yes, added the arrow, because i never liked underlining.
The posts tables are shifted, I wrote it is on purpose. I don't agree the page looks worse because of that, it has more order than without it and also because it helps separating posts.
You do really like the original Karyuus theme more than mine, only because the posts tables are shifted?
I wrote about Opera and other browsers in the first post. Netscape support userscripts AFAIK so my gues is it supports userstyles too.
Finally, did you just write :-\ msie ? Ask them. Not my business what this 5 years old browser can and i mean the 7th version.
-
Alright, I used it now for quite a while and in fact I am getting used to it. The shifty thingie indeed does well for separating posts, most if they arent by signatures.
Yep, I guess its due to the main-page is included in the whole domain thing. Was just wondering if its possible to relate the style to subdomains, defined by a wildcard? However, that page I dont look at ever anyway, I just noticed because my bookmark in Windows is another one like here in linux.
And nope, I originally actually liked your entire style more than the default one, except for the shiftings, which may need some time to get used to.
I still have a little point though:
When I hover / mouse-over over any link in the signature area like a linked image, the whole image gets underlined, thus everything following up moves down a bit (few pixels). Is there a way to fix that?
I dont want to bother you, so I had a look at that code a bit, initially for the shiftings (yes, once again =P), but I wasnt really able to provide much help with it=/
But keep it up, Nikodemus, sooner or later other people will notice the neater look of it=)
EDIT:
lol I added msie only for the sake of completeness, but I seriously hope no one will use it anyway;)
-
I really love pretty much everything about this modification with one small exception. For some reason the rendering of the site is significantly slower. In fact scrolling is all jerky and weird. This computer of mine is a real beast with alot of HP so I wonder if its something on my end (some other extension maybe) or something with the mod. Any ideas? Great work by the way, this is a fantastic improvement. I'll keep it on for sure.
-
Oh right, I forgot that one: Rendering is poor on my end too, and my machine shouldnt have any problems with it.
Perhaps its about the mozilla-plugin and not to change?

Yeah, this underlining is in fact dotted 1px wide bottom border, I know how to fix the issue, will do later on.
For the shifting remove :
position:relative !important;
left:-30px !important;
(search in notepad or something)
Hey Induane ;) The rendering is a FF issue. FF has problems rendering tables, if there are a lot of them, especially if they are childs of another tables. Generally, tables in this forum are really overused. Divs would do just fine, but i didn't project this forum.
For me, when i scroll, the left collumn of the post table has a delay with updating its position, when i scroll, the Author collumn is all fine. I have no idea, which element of the style caused it, but there is probably nothing at all, what I can do to fix it. Better comp won't help, maybe FF 3.0 will. Or you are using 3.0 already, Induane?
I usually don't read while scrolling, so it is not a problem, at least for me, though little annoyance.
-
I have the default repo firefox and then ff3 in /opt for good fun. The stylish extension isn't FF3 compatible yet though so I can't test the table rendering.
-
I have identified what was causing the scrolling glitches on the right side of posting tables.
If there are too many tables on the site and "fixed" elements, bad things happen while scrolling.
in this version (http://psgrafika.republika.pl/pscss/psforumremake_nofixed.css) position:fixed is absolute instead and the body background will no longer be visible when you scroll down.

Noone care anymore for this to become older than 20 days without a single reply? :o
The skin got advanced enough, that some parts of the skin looks like finished.

Neeeeeat!
* I like the colors chosen for the section dividers, but I'm not too fond of that wave itself. Maybe it just repeats too often, but I find it distracting. Can you try something more subtle?
* The asterik for actions is definitely too big. Tone it down - it shouldn't dominate the post. The quotation marks can be scaled down -just a bit- too.
* On the profile page, the section titles are too large as well. I'd prefer a smaller font size, as well as a different color. The blue just looks out of place among brown, even with the wave behind it. Stick to yellow/tan schemes.
* The green graphic between posts looks super compressed. Is that just the screenshot, or how it actually looks? I'd prefer a slightly larger file size, but slightly better appearance, too.
-
thx
- the wave is for the sake of something different than a boring gradient. It is repeated a lot, so it does look repeative ;P Propose something more subtle.
- People often place a line break before and after a meaction. So, the star is almost 3 line breaks high (including the meaction one) It's such a style. It isn't minimalistic. Although resizing down can give good effect, it won't be much.
- Um, yeah, that may happen. Except, the whole menu will be almost exactly as wide, as i don't want the links below to be wrapped in 2 lines. The titles text can be as big, because the whole menu is small anyway, and making it smaller won't give any advantage as there is enough room in the table at the right anyway. And the forum will have green-blue elements, even if it will be brown-yellow overal ;P They are good for details, elements, which aren't present everywhere, but thx to different color, makes the forum less monotonic.
- it is screenshot, saved in 256 colors, i missed that detail.
-
I really like the work you did, good job! I think I'll still use Karyuu's one though, this one is nice but a bit too chaotic for me.
-
make one where every single post made, adds to kary's post count total.
Then I'll poke acraig about using that one then.

It works fine, except for the fancy pants Font :/
looks like this: (http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/3817/usergd7.gif)
Even without it, it still brings joy in my forum life  :flowers:
Nice cursor ^^ :sorcerer:
-
Oh, Georgia. Yes. Instal Scurlock font on your comp, its the font PS uses, inside release.
And i'm sure the icons are a nice suprise, screenshot won't show that niark, niark, niark ;>
-
Yay it works! \\o//
-
Not much has changed but a new version is available.
- bugtracker displays a bit better with the style ON
- new cursor for checkboxes.
Still waiting for someone to make new form icons.
Edit, just finished some additional bunch of changes.
Another update

wow! havent checked back here for a bit, and you made some great advancements, Nikodemus!
the overall looks is cool, the cursor a fancy feature and the performance flawless.
i have noticed some problems there though:
i for instance have Neko's post (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=31420.msg366181#msg366181) with that image. i mouse-over the pic, and the cursor turns into showing a little hint ("when you think you can zoom.."). if i then just click the image, it moves down and enlarges the whole post with empty space of the image's size.
its different with for example Nikodemus' post here (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=31420.msg366179#msg366179):
when hovering over the included image, the cursor again changes. when i click it though, it disappears on click, and reappears on release. trying to click, drag and release results in the image remains disappeared. clicking the line the image was meant to be brings it back.
using firefox 2.0.0.12 + stylish 0.5.6
can anyone confirm this?
the appearance of the whole style i really like!
one more suggestion though, now that i see the preview of this my post here: perhaps links could be highlighted a tad more, for having them easier to notice?
-
It's a feature, which can be used, but it works as it works and there is nothing i can think about to work it out better.
What it does is when you click it:
- the image height for the place it was in is zero, so all the content below moves up
- the image itself goes like 600px or so UP, so to see it you have to scroll up (but if the image was scaled down previously, it will be full size now [if your browser window width is enough to hold it]) (if you wont use scrollwheel, but click the scrollbar, the image will reset to normal, so people without scrollwheel are unfortunately screwed)
you have to hold after clicking and while doin so move the mouse ad then release, (because if you won't the image will reset to normal uppon releasing ;P )
The image has to appear higher than it was, because every post is a separate table (two actually :s IIRR). Because of that the table with post below the one the mage is in would overlay it, making it mostly invisible. (it is still possible if the image is extremaly high, the poster has no sig and put no content below the image :x )
And the whole feature is because in my style no image inside a post can be wider than the collumn holding that post. No horizontal scrollbars. The image is scaled down and you can spot the pixelation effect, because browsers performs a pixel resize.
Btw, look at your sig, it is rescalled to max height of 120px ;P
Thx for your time checking it out.
As about links, is your monitor alright? The links looks fine to me. They are pale green and the text is light brown. They look quite visible to me.
a link ;o, dont clicky it (http://x_erm)
-
Short note:
Yep, Niko, "you dont like it, dont use it" lol=D Was just i was curious when i saw that cursor changing, but i see (i guess) whats its intention.
About the link-colors.. I think I was just used more contrasty colors (and the obtrusive underline), but after this little time I dont have problems recognizing anymore.
However, i am using your style since, and yesterday i switched back to compare - sure thing, i will stick with yours, its grand!
keep it up!=)

I've found a bug:
Whenever people write in 1 point size text the style shows it not as small as it has to be, Now this is sometimes very handy though for some reason when the text contains over two lines they overlap each other. I have no Idea how to fix this and well I'm now just typing to get two lines full so you have a nice example of what I mean.
Only smilies seem to fix it:

Oh i know what i do.
I fix that and add before each line of too small text: "I'm an idiot writing with tiny font thinking you can't read me >> " ;P
Should i do that? xD
EDIT, though not every case of writing with too small font is idiocy ;P I don't know what should i do :s
-
o.0 You fixed it already? \\o// I now see it how it's should be seen :P
??? Strange, I though I had to update the code if you changed it :P
EDIT!:
I found anther one ;)
Watch the greenish/blue text
(http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/1112/forumerrorvx1.th.jpg) (http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?image=forumerrorvx1.jpg)
Another edit: my resolution for my screen is 1280*1024, dunno if that will help ;)
-
I did nothing ;P
Why do you see the blue text and i dont? :-\
-
Go here http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?PHPSESSID=63eb8148012ad6fb44857ce47349fbbb&board=10.0 and you'll see it, it's not when you read a thread, but when you read a forum ;) you'll see a forum description then, that's what the blue text is.
Might not be really blue... something like blue :P Colorblind I am ;)
-
No, i thought you will tell me which setting you have customized to see it here instead of not seeing it ;P
-
:D No, :P the problem was/is that if the description is a bit longer then a few words that the text continues behind the buttons "Mark as read" "Notify" and "New topic" ;)
Marked it red  :
(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/6893/forumerrorbs3.th.jpg) (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=forumerrorbs3.jpg)

It is teh blue text and i was asking what did you change in your options to see it ;P
-
... o.0 Nothing, and just to be sure I just copy/pasted your new code again. And I still see it!
I'll post the whole screenie to amke it more clear as to where and when i see it ;)
(http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/8617/forumerrorgc2.th.jpg) (http://img352.imageshack.us/my.php?image=forumerrorgc2.jpg)
-
You sure put much efford into reporting biugs, thanx ;)
The text you overlined red is customizable in options, look and layout preferences. I have it turned off.
But i fixed it, why wouldn't I? ;)
The style is now updated and you can update yours. Check the modification dates next time if you arent sure ;>
-
Yup it's fixed, and not only did you fix it, you also made a nice installer :flowers:
-
An update.
- With FF3 input boxes changes in stylish causes bad effect. It has ben fixed with -moz css quirks.
- Some other layout improvements in profile.
At this point i think i could ask a forum admin like Acraig to include it as a real skin, except, where are the images I ask for since the beginning? ;P
-
Bump
New posts on chillboards are now better visible from start page.
When you click an image, which is supposed to get bigger, You wont have to scroll up to see it, but if your window isnt high enough to hold it, you won't see it all. A thing for a thing.
Now, signatures really can't be higher than ~120px If they are, the bottom won't display.
-
Didn't use it myself for a while and now i started again and founf out domain has changed, so i had fixed that for everyone not into the IT.
Using chrome now and too bad there are some issues, but no problem to me ;]
