Title: Hallo hallo!
Post by: Mehallie on March 25, 2003, 07:08:30 pm
Right, well I just found this game today, and this forum, and after hearing the general annoyance with the ?EET speaking nonsense I already like it here.  *grin*

I\'m currently downloading the beta version of the game, and I know that this may sound like whining but I\'m hoping to make it just an observation.

I\'m a writer by trade, and the website for PlaneShift honestly had me wincing in places.  The grammar is horrible, spelling errors abound, and while the history is interesting, it seriously needs some polishing.  I\'m married to a \"computer geek\" and so I know that writers and programmers are on a completely different wavelength, but I really hope that if they update the site they use a spell-check program.

In this day and age where people tend to think that spelling the word \"you\" is entirely too difficult,  the website to this game almost turned me off until I just pushed my \"writing snob\" in the closet and took a look at the content (and applied to help with storylines as well!)

Even for this slight annoyance, the game itself looks quite solid, and I look forward to playing it.  I have NO idea how they\'re going to keep it going without having folks pay for it, but I applaud their efforts all the same and will certainly try and help out.

Greetings, Mehallie.  I would like to point out a few tidbits of information so you are up to speed with everyone.   :)

PlaneShift is currently in Pre-Alpha Phase and nowhere near Beta yet.  All one can do is: walk, talk, explore, and pick up crystals.  There is no: fighting, equipping things, opening doors, using skills, etc.  Very early stages, indeed, but the progression made daily is astounding!

I am a new Member to the PlaneShift Settings Team, and yes, there are obvious grammatical/spelling errors on the Background part of the website.  However, that information was penned by someone whose native language is not English.  Taking that into consideration, it is extremely well-written.  Secondly, we are working very hard to bring the next releases within decent amounts of time to our Community, and as such do not focus on upgrading the website.  We are more concerned with: adding more areas to explore, mini-quests, NPCs, better graphics, better load-times...  The list of our \"Have To Do\'s\" is quite long.

So please, feel free to roam the PlaneShift world; just do not mind the construction tape and hardhats we all wear.  Have fun collecting those crystals!  (I know I do.)   ;)

I\'m still looking forward to playing round and collecting crystals as I just like to see how these things work, so no worries there.  Just something to pass the time, and as I\'m usually one of those \"pathetic\" players that does wasteful things like tradeskill *gasp*, no fighting is just fine by me!

And, as I said - I\'m a writing snob.  I figured that whoever wrote the site wasn\'t a native speaker of English as the grammar was rather like my Dutch or French, but as I said, just an observation and I have offered to lend a hand.

I\'ve just showed my husband the site, and he and his fellow programmers are hugely impressed and I wouldn\'t be surprised if a few applied to help out!  I\'m not entirely sure what they\'re going on about when they ooo and aaaah over the \"open source\" and the \"multiplatform\" and the \"sourceforge.net\" thing but I\'m sure it\'s very important  *nods and smiles like a good non-techy wife*

So, I\'m doing my bit to drum up interest already, and hope to meet everyone when I go crystal hunting!

*laughs and nods*  Aye, that I most certainly understand as well.  I am a writer by trade (well, okay... I want to be one, I\'m just aspiring right now - modules, games, articles, not books) whereas my finac?e is an utter computer geek.

I recommend sending in a Resum?/Application for anyone who is interested in joining the PlaneShift Team.  Just a word of caution: the Director currently has over two-hundred applicants so it does take a bit of time to get noticed.   ;)

Perhaps you can entertain us with your literary skills and post on our Role-Playing Forums!  I look forward to seeing you around the boards, Mehallie.

Anyone who would like to volunteer to edit the website for grammatical correctness and spelling is welcome to copy the text into Word and fix it.  Then email it to info@planeshift.it and it will be uploaded.

Welcome to Planeshift Mehallie :D

It\'s a pleasure to welcome you here and I look forward to meeting you \'in person\' so to speak, on the streets of Hydlaa, or relaxing in the tavern.

Congratulations Kahlisi, on your new WTB status. From what I\'ve seen, you\'ve certainly earned your place. I look forward to more of your work.
Title: Will volunteer here!

I don\'t have much to do over here during the day other than watch grass grow and stare at my manuscript until my eyes bleed, so I\'m game to do some editing for the site and send it.  Ta much for the link - I\'ll get on that tomorrow with references to the page as well.

Thanks again for the welcome, and I\'ll be sure to check the Tavern and maybe give my Muse a shot of espresso and write a few things in the roleplay forum (once I see a bit of the game and get a feel for it).

Hubby has looked round the site and is foaming at the mouth with excitement, so I\'m going to give him a Star Trek video and a glass of warm milk to get him to calm down now.  heheheh.

Hi  Mehallie...nice to hear someone actually cares enough (and is not too lazy) to do that for PS :)
Title: No worries :)

I prefer to actually lend a hand if something needs doing rather than whinging  (that\'s an English word, by the way heh).

As long as no-one has an issue with standard UK spelling, then I\'ll give it a go on the morrow and do some basic editing.

*checks on hubby\'s progress and notes that he has stopped twitching*

You had a few, yes, I noted them, and that was good of you, but they\'ve got an awful lot to do, hence I jumped at the chance to volunteer for this myself.

My advice would be - the next time you see something, why not volunteer to work on it yourself?  This is after all a game that everyone can contribute to.  And don\'t get fussed when things don\'t go the way you intended.

Sorted :)

Editing text in Word has absolutely nothing to do with OSS or with the GPLing of PS code.

Kahlisi, what kind of literature do you write?
