I want to make money, and I seem to simply be too weak to make one from being a warrior. After much thought, I thought I would want to get into smithing. Can someone tell me where the nearest mines are?

Look around for people carrying pickaxes, follow them or ask them where they are going and where the mines are. best place to hang around looking for miners is Harnquist's or Trasok's. Good luck.

Have you tried asking in world?
You'll find that you'll be able to collect up-to-date information about several mines this way.
Mines do go dry, veins run out, etc.
You might consider asking travellers at the City Gates, etc.
You get something extra by asking in-world ...
