Title: Food, glorious Food
Post by: Leama on February 20, 2008, 04:38:03 pm
Oliver said, “Can I have some more please, Sir?” (From the musical Oliver)

After reading Raa’s great thread on your ‘favorite non-alcoholic drink’ I got to thinking;
What is your favorite food? Please include recipes too if you can.

Baklava. Just layer a bunch of phyllo dough and crushed nuts, bake, then pour sugary honey stuff all over it. Simple and yummeh.  :D Phyllo breaks easy, though... Still worth it. <.<

i agree with Raa (for once), though cutting up the  baked baklava after is always so hard...it just all crumbles up :(

KeyLime pie has GOT to be one of my favorites...i used to make it myself but i since have forgotten the recipe. I went to key west though last year and had the greatest key lime pie in the world...YUMMY!  \\o//

Right there with ya, Socius! XD
...tried octopus once, wasn't impressed. Too chewy, not much flavor.
Eel is excellent if done right though. :)

Oh where do i start?

I think my universal favourite would be roti prata, or roti canai in Malaysia. its hard to describe so picture :

And recipe:

Ingredients:
1 kg plain flour, sifted in a large bowl
16 oz (2 cups) water
80 g ghee (clarified butter)
3 tbsp sugar
2 - 3 tbsp salt
1 tsp vanilla essence

Method:
Mix water, sugar and salt. Add 40g ghee, stir and add liquid mixture to the flour and knead till dough is soft, smooth and firm. Rest 20 minutes, shape 50g of dough into a ball, coat with ghee to prevent sticking. Repeat with remaining dough and stack the balls into a bowl, cover with plastic wrap for 4 hours or more. Put a griddle on medium heat. Flatten each piece of dough on a greased surface by stretching outwards and finally by tossing in the air, till you get a paper-thin dough. Fold sides inwards to form a square, put on hot griddle, folded side down and fry till golden brown. Turn over and fry till browned. Repeat with all the dough. Make the Prata fluffy by clapping each prata between your hands. Serve with meat curry or with a sprinkling of sugar.

But the best has to be this one : carrot cake (hint: it's not the western one)

Ingredients:
4 radish flour cakes
4 tbs vegetable oil or lard
1 tbs chopped garlic
1 tbs red chilli paste
1 tbs chopped chye poh (salted radish)
2 eggs
1 tbs fish sauce
1 stalk fresh spring onion, chopped
5 tbs oil

Method:
Heat two tablespoons of oil or lard in a wok. When smoking hot, brown the radish flour cakes, cutting it into small pieces with the spatula as you fry. Push aside the pieces. Heat another table spoon of oil in the wok. Saut garlic and chye poh till browned. Toss with the radish cake pieces. Make a space in the middle, add the last of the oil and break eggs into the space. Leave to set for a few minutes and then push the radish cake on top. Drizzle with fish sauce, add chilli paste and toss some more to ensure an even mix. Serve hot garnished with spring onion.

Indian food ftw.  My favorite food ever is chicken vindaloo, extra spicy.  One time my friends and I invented a vindaloo pizza and it was awesome.

I could probably fill an entire cookbook with all the tasty dishes in my mind but my all-time favorite would be ...

A nice juicy rumsteak, saignant (That means you heat your pan or grill for five minutes, toss the steak in, push it down onto the surface to sear everything up. Hold for thirty seconds, turn around, repeat and remove steak from fire.), with a pepercream (literal translation) sauce  ... what I like my meat bloody :P Obviously I wouldn't suggest ordering it in dubious restaurants or making it with low quality meat. Too much risk of food poisoning.

Together with that steak I'll either take a good portion of crispy soft belgian fries. Nobody has eaten real fries until you had some in belgium. :P That or bollekes or croquetes as they're called.

I'm boring.

Take a can of tuna, add miracle whip knockoff mayonnaise, add cheese, mix, and eat on bread.

*shrugs*
