I have attempted to find out more about this error. I'm running an AMD Sempron 3g, Windows XP, and an integrated NVidia Geoforce 4. Following the advice of posts found here, I have updated my NVidia drivers. Now I have a black screen. I cannot enter setup, or run the game. I found one other person who posted the same problem, but no solution was posted.
I got the upadate and now all i get is a black screen. Even the planeshift setup screen is black.
now what?
Any help would be great.

I have the same graphic card in 3 machines and i have same problems sometimes with some games. I dont know is the the same problem but but smiler and may be these can help you:
Try drivers version 85.xx or a little older, be sure driver is signed.
If it doesnt work too, try "High performance" D3D settings from NVidia panel. I didnt tried this in PS but it helps working Diablo 2 etc old games when everything is balck. Also make your AA and AF(anisotropic filtering) settings " off, not application controlled or else.
*edit*
Sorry, changing D3D settings wont work. I forgot PS is runnning on OpenGL. Grin
Changing driver will probably work.

I had this problem, admitedly on Vista.. What I did was right click on the PlaneShift startup icon and click properties. Go to the Compatibility tab and check Disable Desktop Composition. Somehow the aero theme was conflicting. This could be sort of the same problem, although what I did isn't an option in XP.
Good Luck
