I read that I would need a new client when the server is bake up I am not sure of what that actually means does this mean I have to start all over again? or doe this mean I have to re download the game ? ( I am hoping the latter) because I just started to figure a couple of things out lol

Hi
Dont be afraid the server dont forget you ! but if you want play again you need to install the new client ! soon
-
You only need to download the changed game. Your character data is saved in some database and you don't need to start all over again.
The point where your character would get deleted and you would have to start over would be called a wipe.

Thank you for the explanation/s so I might as well uninstall the current version then?

Hm - yes. But be careful that you save some files:
in your Planeshift game folder (Programs->Planeshift on Windows /opt/planeshift or similar on linux) there is a log directory where you find a ..._chat.txt logfile that you should save somewhere.
There is also a data folder where you need to save a questnotes_....xml
Put these files in a place where you can find them again.

"dont forget your "personnal shortcut" to.and the screnshoot you have take !
but you can let the old software on your hard drive "no problem"
-
actually, if you have been reading the changelog, you would have read that the place where all that stuff is saved and how its saved has had an overhaul, so saving the old stuff and putting it in the new location could very well have adverse reactions to your ability to play. soooo, saved your shortcuts at your own risk :)

The ChangeLog isn't available yet, neko. So they can't read it ;)

hmm ok so if I just install this over top of the older version will it over write the old files . oh and by the way I am using Linux Ubuntu ( a noobie to Linux)

Thom neko ment history.txt not your thread that is elsewhere.

If you have ubuntu and they have a package for Planeshift (Arch Linux has at least a PKGBUILD) then you better wait for that. If you installed it manually with the normal installer, then you might uninstall it in order for the new installation to work properly. Maybe this is done automatically with the new installation or not.
What I heard about, is that all player logs, infos etc. are saved in the /home directory now and I guess also in different manner. So there is no real need to save all the config files, but in any case it is good to have your chat log and your questlog somewhere. Even if it will be different now, you can look anything up manually in the old files.
PS:
I kind of skipped through history.txt and history2007.txt quite interesting.

Gah, of course.

Well I don't seem to have any quest logs I am thinking this is because I haven't done / finished any quests yet lol

Can we still use our old files like shortcuts?
-
There may be some risks in using your old shortcuts files (although mine seems to work fine). Other files should be ok. The will be stored in a different location now.
-
Thanks for your quick reply, Lanarel.
The risk you mention, would it be an obvious one, or something causing severe trouble secretly and over time?
I know I am impatient now, but hows it with the arts-files? For every new client I needed relit BD maps - is it possible (necessary at all?Oo) to use old stuff either?
-
Shortcuts may work perhaps, but if you have keys assigned to the shortcuts, like "F8" or something, that won't work for sure.

The risk I guess is messed-up shortcut files once the game tries to update the files. As I said, all my old shortcuts appeared fine (including most keys), but that does not mean there won't be problems later on.
About the maps, I cannot tell. If nothing changed to the art (e.g., someone planted a house somewhere), you should be safe using the old file. You would still have a hole in it though, that finally seems to be fixed. ALso, for some maps, there have been roads added to new places, and maybe even whole places got moved. Simplest way is to try the old map. If the came crashes, or you fall of the earth somewhere, you know it does not work.
