Title: Windows: how to set data folder into Program Files?
Post by: Lelerey on March 02, 2008, 03:10:09 pm
I'd prefer to have my logs and screenshots in my program files directory instead of this hidden folder. Does somebody know a way to do that?

actually,

If i read the code right, on windows it is using the default location Windows sets aside for your documents and settings place to store it's files now.

I don't remember where, but in the registry, you can change it to have the default folder for those things be any other place of the hard drive.

but changing that, will make it so that any of your programs that saves things into your docs and settings area will now save it to the newly designated place instead.

andddd, if you don't know what you're doing, monkeying with the registry could corrupt your OS.

up to you if you like.  :)

Over different operating systems it is somewhat a standard that you DON'T put user files in the program directory. More and more programs follow this scheme now. If you want to got the other way around you will get some problems, but it won't do without problems.

If you don't like the folder to be hidden you can either change that files get hidden in explorer or make a shortcut to the folder on windows.

On linux you can also to a symlink so you it's not hidden or even a symlink from the program directory to your user folder... if you really feel like it.

I don't know if it's better or not but now Planeshift is no more a portable game.

I used to have it on a portable hard disk and could play from it at work without leaving files on that computer. I know it's bad  :-[.

Jonerian i was thinking all old programs were following that scheme and that now it was better to put it in the program files to have a safer system. Look at all the sites with portables apps for windows. Ccleaner and other software have released recently special portable version of their software.

And yes i'm a bit scared to modify the registry  :-\

At least i will work better  ;)

A portable firefox is one thing, you might acutually need that, but this is something special in the case you can't install software on the machine.

In a case of a big game it should actually to do it the other way around: Install the game on different machines and put your /home directory (or how that is called in Windows) on a portable storage.

If you need to put PS on a portable disk because you can't install it on some computers, then you might just do both:
Put you userfiles on the portable disk
and put the game also there (in another directory).

On Linux this works really good, should also be possible on Vista, but for XP you need some special software to do a good linking to certain parts of your home folder.
On Windows you can also move your whole user directory to another harddrive (even a portable one I think).

Hope that helps.

EDIT:
Thinking of a portable game is also quite weird for a 350 MB installation hat uses lots of ressources. Portable firefox is quite a bit smaller *g*.
Thinking of portable firefox: It is kind of another branch. I don't know exactly if you are allowed to make small changes to the client like that and still connect to laanx and use the PS art.
