Since 0.4.000 version of Planeshift I have a serious problem with BD area. The only thing that I found on forums is Talad's post from 2006. about similar matter but it's not helping in my case.
When I enter BD area things are going smooth for about 2-3 minutes and then suddenly my framerate falls like 0.2 frames/second and it stayes like that until I quit and relog. After relog I can again play for 2-3 minutes and then ...bang.... all over again. I tried with camera adjusting but my machine can handle BD graphic. I'm not an expert but it looks to me like some memory leak that fills the cup after some time.
I'm running updater every day.
My computer is:
Intel Celeron 2,4 MHz
1 GB DDR1 RAM
ATI Radeon 9550 GE 256MB
Creative Sound Blaster LIVE!
In 0.3.20 BD was fine for me. All happened after upgrade to 0.4.000.
Thank you for your time and good will.

I'm pretty sure its a memory leak. I'm on linux, and I was monitering my performance there, and saw a gradual increase in the amount of memory and swap space that was being used there. That's just my guess though.

Are you people playing in Bronze Doors without problems?
I talked to Noxide too, and he's been saying that he has the similar problem....
-
for me bd is playable but it has it's... jerking moments, tho i noticed that on my old pc it lags as you describe
-
I've got this too, I can play in BD for about 10-15 minutes, then get a huge wave of lag that I can't even move in. This has happened twice so far.
-
Consistent for me too. If I reload while in BD, it is fine until something triggers it to stutter, probably like they've said in other posts, the waterfall, torches, etc. It usually stutters every 2 seconds I counted as I'm running. There was a particle issue back in '06 early '07, so not sure if that is still the case? It is a massively cool looking area, so I can see how there'd be issues, but just seeing if there was maybe a fix or if they needed any feedback on this area. This looks to be the newest post on BD? I tried some different settings, turned on SLI, load all maps in the beginning, vertex, aliasing, etc, but still get the 2 sec quick stutter. Still playable for me, though I thought for sure I'd fall off the side a couple times when it stutters and when it recovers, my mouse is accidentally pointing off the ledge. Keeps it interesting on long road trips.
AMD X2 4600+
4 GB RAM
2 x Geforce 7600 GT

same here, i'm at the waterfall. Stutters every second. Visual settings have no effect. I'm on linux.

Hi
I Know !

and i have lag in the new town to !
-
Sorry, but this is really starting to bother me. Should I just avoid BD? Or is there an actual fix for this one?
Yeah, I know, :beta:
But I would really appreciate an answer.
*Edit: Sorry if this sounded a little mean... I just didn't see any attention being paid to this one, and it annoyed me. :P
Here's my system specs if that helps...
Computer type (i.e. Powerbook, G4 Tower, etc): Macbook
Mac OS Version (x.x.x): 10.5.whatever is most current
Processor (speed, type): 2 GHz ,Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 1 GB
Video Card (type, VRAM): GMA X3100, 144 MB

Just because we do not post on it does not mean we are not working on it. :)
Thank you for providing more information.

-fullbright fixed the low framerate in bd for me
-
Alright, thanks Rizin, I feel better now. :D

-fullbright fixed the low framerate in bd for me
as it did for me too, even Gugrondid is better now. \\o//

I'll put my hand up as another that will only go near bd with -fullbright. The map is too jerky otherwise.
-
I went through BD and found that pitch black area of ground, used fullbright and got through it ok, then I cant remember exactly but I may have turned fullbright off but the thing was while walking through BD the screen would freeze for a couple frames every 5 seconds or so. Will test to see if fullbright fixes it.
-
Yes, I have noticed this pitch area (which is quite large), too. I have never changed the brightness so this "problem" seems to occur with standard settings. Half a year ago I had just the "drop of framerate"-problem with BD, so this pitch black area must be quite new. I asumed that some textures were missing but hearing that it is a brightness problem ... maybe it got into the game when the lighting was implemented.
When moving in BD I can do so maybe 2 or 3 seconds than the display halts for a fraction of a second before I move on. I have this problem only with BD. Everything else runs smoothly.

Is -fullbright a command line arg? I am running Linux (Fedora 7 or 8 depending on which machine i use) and BD is unusable for me. I also had issues in Arena. I finally got into and out of BD for a quest after setting adaptive distance to less than 20 and a max framerate of 10, First person camera angle and staring at the ground... and then ONLY with Talads updated maps. I was experiencing extreme lag and display lockups ever couple of seconds while in BD. I can run everywhere else in Yliakum with no graphics problems. I am not running on a slow machine...
Athlon64 3200 w/ 2.5GB RAM and PCI-e nVidia 256MB Video card running the binary nvidia drivers. 64-bit fedora and PS.

Excuse me people, but could you explain what you mean when you speak of this "-fullbright"? I couldn't find it in the game options, so where do I find this "-fullbright" option or exactly how can I use it? ???
-
Right click on your Shortcut (the one you are using to launch the game) , hit properties and then popups this window.

just add -fullbright like its on the image :)
-
Is this command line arg also available under linux and mac?

yes and yes, but a lot of maps are lighter2 now and fullbright does NOT work on them.
-
So... um... does the fullbright option work with Talad's version of the BD maps or the latest game version of the BD maps? Are we lucky enough that it will work with both?

yes and yes

BD area exhibits the same characteristics for me as well. i figured it was because my systems a little bit older. Logging out and in does minimize the jerky play. I also note that my stamina drains very quickly when the display shudders but my travel distance remains dismally small.
On a similar yet different topic. When zoning (changing maps) if I'm running my stamina completely drains. Bit of a drag. At lease most map change area's have a color or light variance that I can use to stop running and minimize the stamina drain.

You can hit a "sit down" command hotkey while the map is loading to benefit from that effect if you made one in short cuts

I experienced this issue too the other day when I was there. I noticed a couple people in the thread said they were running on Linux, and so am I. What I thought it was was something was blocking either the main thread or the graphics thread. It was too consistent to be a memory swap issue. Roughly every 10 seconds my system would just stop responding completely, even if I was standing still. It would last about a half second to one second. Then it would come back and keep going.
-
so it's not only windows that have this problem anymore interesting...

Seems to be an issue with the light maps.
Looking into the cache/thing_lm folder inside the bronze doors zip-file shows that several of them are >1MB and all of them together sum up to ~ 36.2MB.
I didn't find any easy way to resize cslighter lightmaps as of yet.
Edit: changing the MaxTextureSize didn't really fix it (after longer testing). I will test further.
however uncommenting the MaxTextureSize in the r3dopengl.cfg file (setting it to 1024) solved the issue for me.
However, this can only be a temporal fix.
file: ./data/config/r3dopengl.cfg
Video.OpenGL.Caps.MaxTextureSize = 1024
Try this value first, if it doesn't really help, you may also change it to 512. However, 1024 worked perfectly for me.
Sidenote: This doesn't work for Hydlaa (or other lighter2 maps, since this value doesn't affect the size of ligher2 light maps)
If you have issues with hydlaa_plaza, hydlaa_jayose or ojaveda, you may want to try those inofficial maps (which have rescaled light maps): http://wol.pilum.net/smf/index.php/topic,75.0.html
However, please note that this isn't a long-term fix.

good news for those of you that get low fps in new lighter2 maps, it seems that the next release will have more fps's due to the change to cs 1.3 from cs 1.2. I have gotten an increase from about 5 fps at 10 distance to about 17 at 100 distance in the plaza with the same maps using a trunk build with cs 1.3 [just moved to] .
-
That's indeed great news. Maybe we should open a new thread (or have this one split) concerning lighter2 maps (since bdoors isn't one of those)
Lets see if CS1.3 renders my hacked maps unnecessary. However, till now - for some - they changed the plaza from "completely unplayable" to "Hooray! I can move again!". I know "not so new hardware" isn't the goal of PS, however maybe the combination of both (CS1.3 and the hacked maps since 1024x1024-light maps seems to be too much for some graphic cards to handle) will enable them to run around on lighter2 maps without considerable lag ^^.
I should also hack the tutorial map.. have not had time to do it.
The Bronze Doors performance issue (freeze every 1-4 seconds) isn't Bronze Doors related. However since it's the one map which consumes most of the performance it's very noticeable there.
