Went by the platinum fields the other day and saw a Ynnwn mining there. I suspect there are many more at other times that I have not seen.
It would seem to me that this would be a torturous activity for that race as while they may be digging ore and not the purified metal they cannot help but breathe in some of the dust or otherwise ingest it. What I am wondering is will there be some other type of ore that does not affect them similarly that will provide a similar income? Could it be that there will be something that affects other races in a similar manner to which they will be immune for balance?
-
The ones that mine platinum mostly don't care about roleplay and settings. When the race rules are implemented, I am sure there will be a penalty for them.

I thought it was Diaboli that were allergic to gold? ???
-
Raa, for the final time, Diaboli are weak to holy things (not silver), and Ynnwn are weak to precious metals. :P
Anyway, aren't there any sort of precautions they can take so that they could mine gold/platinum? Such as wearing a mask and gloves?
-
One would think that the dust would permeate any precautions they could make except perhaps magical ones. Mining is hard work and very dusty, dust and sweat make a paste that goes where it will, pretty much.
@Donari I guess that means you do not buy precious metals from Ynnwn as you do care for role playing and the settings.... right?
-
Perhaps they could build up an immunity to it, or just suffer from the effects? The settings details we've been given only incorporate that they get rashes from these metals, and take heavy damage if cut with these metals, so on my Ynnwn character, I only make mention that he has rashes all over his hands, and in my roleplay he's scratching them pretty often.
-
As suggested, I would suspect that it would be more than just exposed skin that would be affected due to the previously mentioned considerations but you are right it is a little undeveloped at the moment which is why this is a discussion and not a diatribe. It was just something that occurred to me last night.
-
I don't think any Ynnwn would be able to ignore the rashes. They itch like hell, and can even hurt sometimes. I'm allergic to nickel, so I avoid it at all cost, and I doubt a Ynnwn would like rashes all over his body all the time.

Miners gloves? tight leather armor prevents most exposure.
Inhaling is only a little bit, and dust is a danger to anyone ;)
Good protection is the key with Ynnwn I guess?

I've actually had this discussion in-game quite a bit. I have an Ynnwn character who is also a blacksmith and I do my best to keep away from any silver, gold or platinum. Definitely won't touch it without gloves on and also won't process it unless as a honorary creation. My character considers it one of the greatest and rarest gifts he can bestow upon someone, when he creates a gift out of precious metals ... of course accompagnied by the inevitable pain and discomfort.
As for others, I found that most ignore the effect at all since there is no in-game consequence tied to it. Those that do roleplay often tend to find an excuse to work around it ... because precious metals are the best way to make money in-game.
Personally I wouldn't mind seeing Ynnwn getting ill (read: small temporary stat debuff), which gets worse the longer they mine or smelt precious metals. Breathing in dust particles (mining) or metallic fumes (smelting) wouldn't be healthy for anyone but definitely not when you're allergic to it.This is of course on top of the mentioned increased damage taken from the weapons.

I agree with Zan ;)
Because I hate mining and prefer sending others to do it for me I usually pick ynnwn characters to have an IC excuse to not mine for money anways. ;D

And you also can not smelt it, because in gaseous form things go through easir on any filter than in dust form.

All in due time... :)
There is currently a book in game that discusses this in a minor fashion, if you all (the community) find this topic interesting (Ynnwn and their physical reactions to precious metals), please turn into a summary post of some sort and add it here (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=28285.msg325148#msg325148).
