Title: flagged for RP
Post by: Gravemind on March 21, 2008, 03:05:21 pm
Ok, here's an idea I had several games ago which you guys should put in yours: allow characters to flag for RP. Just like how in WoW you can flag for PVP and your name turns red, I thought it would be good to be able to flag or RP and have your name turn purple or whatever unused color happens to be lying around.

Would not be hard to implement and would make it much easier to find people looking for a good RP session, as you're more likely to stop to chat to a flagged person then you are to someone who's probably about on more important business like hunting or mining or training.

the thing is...

everyone would be flagged all the time, as PS is geared towards having a world, where, every player, should be playing their characters roll, all the time.

thusly, making the different name color thing kinda moot.

Well the idea is to differentiate between the occasional conversation started up while mining or fighting and people who are bored with that and are looking for a particularly long and in-depth RP session. It's not saying that people who aren't flagged wouldn't be IC, but that people who aren't flagged are not particularly interested in doing nothing but RP for about an hour. Eh?

I've made a post before; just set yourself to auto-accept challenges and in your description write "[open pvp]"

He's talking about RP flag not PvP flag, shorty.

And I think the idea may have some merrit... But I guess you can just put [lfrp] in your desc...

seems to me that won't ever happen for the same reason why there will never be an OOC open chat channel.

As having a flag would tell people that it's ok to be OOC when you haven't turned the RP flag on, even if that is not what is meant by it.

The devs have tried to gear the game towards having the game mechanics be such that they want to promote RP, all the time, and not making it 'ok' to be OOC.

I think what might work would be an article of clothing that signifies "looking for the out of the ordinary." For example: "When I am looking for adventure I will put on my traveling hat and walk down the road with a whole new attitude! There nothing really special about my hat but the feeling I get when I wear it always seems to open up possibilities that do not crop up when I am going about my day to day activities." Some of the things people do are kind of far-fetched and something like this could be an indication that the player is ready to go along with whatever.

It's more a flag for people who are looking for a dedicated RP session, or it could even be a cry for "GM's! Please involve me in some plot!"

See what you miss when you don't, stay, alert?

Be constantly aware of your surroundings, people. There are many dangers out there in the world of your computer and if you blink, you could miss the clue that saves your life.

I know what you meant; it is you who mis-understood.  I'll try to reword it:

You want a flag so that people can turn it on and which says, "hey I want to do something outside the norm day to day RP life!"

I say, even though that it may be meant for that purpose, players will instead use it as an excuse for being OOC. "I'm not RP flagged, I don't have to RP."  Which is not what the devs are trying to do as they create the game.

So even though the flag option may be meant for one thing, it will be used and interpreted differently, which will hurt the RP atmosphere of the game in the long run.

Playing Planeshift means you want to roleplay, there's no need to say you want to roleplay in a roleplaying game.
Of course it's "allowed" to simply ooc'ly grind and PL without giving a heck on any character-development, but in general those people arent looked very pleasedly at.

However, such a flag would, like Neko tries to say, separate people into two parties, roleplayers and non-roleplayers, giving each a valid reason. And since it's emphasized to roleplay (although I read once something else in irc once..), to not roleplay wont be emphasized;)

Another problem is that you can't see most of the names. Unless you give away free coockies for an introduction ;)

I suppose it all comes down to how much we can trust the player base to RP. I've already seen people using emoticons and just randomly clicking introduce without any dialogue so yeah, I guess neko makes a very valid point
