Ok, so I got my light armor skill to halfway through 5 and all of a sudden I no longer get practice points when the rats or anything else in the sewer. I messed around in the area but that was also no luck as the stuff there just damages me and you get light armor practice from dodging their attacks.
What to do?

is the quality on the armor 0?
might have to repair it.

The real problem is likely that your opponents stopped fighting back. You cannot train armor if nothing ever takes a swing at you. To me that is one of the biggest problems with the npcclient instability and the main thing that makes attacking the defenseless (barely) acceptable. Strictly speaking you ought not attack anything under these conditions that is normally too strong for you. That is just gratuitous moralizing, of course, many people do it anyway.
