Title: S.A.T scores
Post by: cmhitman on April 01, 2003, 07:09:14 pm
I took a practice sat and scored a 920
I know, this is low...me so stupid but I was wondering what other peoples sat scores where
(me, math:470 verbal:450)
any genius\'s here?
anyone with good tips on getting a better score?

Yes that is very low.

If I were you I would buy a book on how to improve your scores.  They have lots of tips and tricks for the different types of questions, and lots of practice tests.  You should be able to raise your score at least 200 points if you go through and do everything the book says.

fwiw, I got a 1560 back in the day.

I got 1120, I think. Not very high but I got into this damned \'genius school\' anyway. I got 99% national percentile on the PSAT, though.  My recommendation rof standardized tests is this: pay attention in school and don\'t study for the test (unless you do it at least a couple days in advance). I never do well on tests for which I study.  If you want to study, do it long before you actually take the test. There are websites you can go to with old SATs on them if you want to practice.

thanks for the tips...
venge, did you take any sat prep class\'s back in the day?
I got a book that i\'m reading, it\'s titled: Beating the SAT.
I\'m taking this sat prep class at my school.
Its from the princeton review, my school got a huge grant because we scored second best out of the state, so We dont have to pay to take it, normaly the class is like 800 hundred dollars a pop. I think i\'m struggling because its timed. I calculated that i could have saved around 20.34 raw points if I would have left the questions that i guessed on, without looking at them, blank. Hopefully when i take the next practice sat i can improve, but i have this fear that i\'m propbable gonna be headed to community college for the next few years..

anyway,  anyone here read beating the sat? That Joe Bloggs approach seems so condescending; It makes me feel consumed with this unbearable stupidty; Maybe because they classify everyone as being average and unknowing.
anyone else got the pre-sat blues?

never taken the SAT\'s, but i scored in the 99th percentile on ACT.  Locally it was only like 94 though.  Still good in my book.

Cyo, have you heard anything about the National Merit Scholarship?  I thought if you did really well on the PSAT, you could be qualified for it, but I haven\'t heard anything about it.

I found a scholarship where because I\'m so poor, they\'ll give me free community college, then when i\'m done with a two year term and have complete all my basics they\'ll give me a $77,000 scholarship to go to a cali state college for my major... I think i might take the community college route.  :D

I really don\'t like studying for tests like that,... so I don\'t do it.  The final time I took my SATs I got a 1400... but that was in the middle of my freshman year of highschool.

yeah, i feel you, I usualy dont cram, but hell they said it\'ll give me an edge and damn if I care where it comes from or how they do it. I guess its cause i\'m so lazy I\'d rather take there miracle 200 point boost approach...eh as long as I can get into a college and start learning something that\'ll allow me to realize my plan of world domination.  :D

A lot of those courses will *guarantee* you a 100 point increase, and do a lot better for some people.

cm you are a pretty bright guy and there is no reason for you to be scoring like that.  I think simply having some more practice at those tests would speed you up.  20 extra raw points is like 200 points to your final score, and 1120 is a very decent score.  You can do it.

Isn\'t 1200 average, or am I thinking of something else?

Nah, I think average SAT score is 995.  Or at least that\'s what Google says...  It is down from 1020.   :)

I don\'t think you need to be a genius to get a reasonably good SAT score. Took my SAT last year as part of the admission requirements for entry to a local university here in Singapore.

Here most of our pple score highly for Math and screw the verbal over, but I think the SAT is not a very good indicator of \'geniousity\', since most of our students here score okay by \"mugging\", where they just continually practice till their eyes pop out.

I did about 2-3 weeks of preparation, but this really involved me working through some practice papers about an hour or so per day, or every other day. Managed a 1430 (630verbal/800math) but I think at least for the math portion it\'s just incredibly important that you be very careful. The mathematics itself isn\'t tough, but how you can miss one or two important words or symbols could really get you.

My verbal my score isn\'t much to talk about, but as long as you do some reading and don\'t live in a closet you ought to get an okay score as well.

I\'d think that those with a reasonably good intellect ought to get 1500+ easily. If you aren\'t that smart you have to practice more, but if you\'re really smart you could always afford to practice less.

I havn\'t taken my SAT\'s yet, but you say you are getting tips from a book? try to get more than one book, and see what they have in common and what they BOTH emphasize. And improve on those things. :D

Well I scored a measly 1190 on my SAT\'s, my ACT score was worse.  But hey I got accepted to my college of choice so its ok.

My final practice was 1020 (math: 470 and verbal: 550)
Not exactly great but an improvement...and i\'m happy.
if anything, the class gave me confidence.

Your verbal score improved very much but you could work on the math I suppose, what math class are you in? (trig, alg. 2, pre-calc, calc etc.)

I invented hoover cars, super smash brothers and gta3 in the third grade and a stealth suit last summer (patent pending?yeah right) but I?ll never get any credit cause  before I?m educated enough to create it a team of 3-4 skilled engineers will have already begun.
I?m in business calc, I droped alg 2 because I was absent for 2 months from school and my mind died. But next year I have a full college prep schedule lined up.

Ps, I?m not lieing or joking about any of the gadgets I?ve conjured up.
I guess I could tell you how my inventions work, seeing as none of you prob.
Care much.
Stealth suit worked using paper thin hd televisions screens (the kind that won?t be seen until ?08 ) and an array of micro hd cams places at  corners of each hd screen. User will be able to switch from witch side the cams should redirect light (or picture, however you want it) with an option to go camo(traditional), color(computer calibrates your surrounding an comes up with the pefect cameleon-like match) or crystal mode(real time light redirection witch simulates quasi-invisibility).
But just about 2 months ago some Japanese guys pulled off a little version of my creation using two video cams, a green coat and a projector, I saw it on tech tv (just like my reverse polarized magnet hoover cars)

So there it is, I come up with little inventions like this all the time. Mostly when I hear of new technology, or if I think up useful technology to make my sci-fi dreams come true but I hardly ever really do mush more than write them down, date them and keep up on the root technology.
