Title: How much will PlaneShift slow down my computer?
Post by: Kikkyou on April 12, 2008, 05:46:23 am
Hi,
I would like to download PlaneShift, (I used to play a few years ago) but my parents won't let me because they think it will slow down the computer. How much would having it installed slow down a computer? (iMac G4, 55.7 GB hard drive)

How much RAM and what kind of video card do you have?  PlaneShift is more a memory eater recently than it ever has been so keep that in mind.

According to System Profiler, the computer has 768 MB SDRAM, and a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card. Do you need any more information?

I've heard of people who can play it with 512 MB of RAM with no problem, as long as they don't have anything else running.  I don't know if a GeForce2 MX can handle it any more, but you can try.

A different answer to your question is that there should be nothing that causes your computer to slow down just because you have the game installed. It does not load any persistent programs in resident memory and only uses resources when it is actually being run, i.e. when you start the game. There have been memory problems, in Windows to my knowledge, but possibly in the Mac as well, which resulted from the program failing to unload properly but nothing that a system reboot would not fix.
