I have this game called \"Indiana Jones and the fate of atlantis\" :D I really like this game and i recently downloaded it off the internet. The only problem is that it doesnt play any sounds, im guessing this is because its an OLD game and windows XP doesnt like it ;( . Could anyone help me with this? I would really appreciate it!!
-
Heh, thats not a bad game, saw my friend play it 7 or 8 years ago (not sure if it was made after or before the \"last crusade\"), i prefered the Monkey island series persoanly or DotT (Day of the Tentacle).
Alot of those old Dos games had seperate .exe\'s for configureing the sound card (although it wasnt common for the SCUMM engine Lucas Art adventure games), check the programmes root directory for a sound.bat or sound.exe file and run it. Although even if it has got a seperate exe for sound card configureation your sound card might not be supported or unable to play such outdated stuff. Dont see why it wouldnt though.
You might prefer it withOUT the sound however since most Dos games Midi\'s where pretty primitive, thank goodness for wav\'s .ogg\'s and .mp3\'s ^_^.
Also try starting it up straight from dos(command) prompt rather than from windows explorer, hmm can XP restart to Dos?...
youve spured my memories! I think ill go give Home of the Underdogs another browse, see if theres any more of my favourites from decades past for download there, hmmmm Star Control 2!!!.... must get!. (If anyones wondering Abandonwarez is not the same as Warez and is perfectly legal).
-
As legal as mp3\'s are anyways..
I used to download all of those...too bad lucas arts won\'t let them release all the good old ones :(
-
its really sad, if Bill Gates keeps this up the next releases of Windows will have no support for DOS left.
Then nobody will be able to experience the magic of those old games.
Except the ones who will go through the effort of actually installing an older OS, and those will be rare.
-
just install Linux as your OS and use winex :D

-
Yea, Linux is the best choice anyways...;)
but you can also make a dos boot-disk its easy if you have a floppy drive, If you haven\'t you can make a bootable cdrom, I just don\'t have any link atm...
But DOS can be downloaded for free and leagally...:D

Here is a message i recieve from my game when i try and get the sound working:
\"There is a conflict between the PORT/IRQ detected and the values set in your BLASTER enviroment variable.
Your enviroment currently reads: SET BLASTER=a220 i5 d1 p330 t3
You can either start the game by typing:
atlantis s220/UNDETERMINED
or change the BLASTER enviroment variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to read:
SET BLASTER=A220 IUNDETERMINED\"
When i try to start the game anyways i get another error that says:
\"D:\\indy\\HELPME.EXE
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0000 IP:0022 OP:fe 30 1c 02 4f Choose \'Close\' to terminate the application.\"
Can anyone help me?

How come you have an avatar Bigfoot? and how did you get it to work? I cant add an avatar, i dont think anyone else can either.
-
not sure what that error means... might be tring to access the help.exe from d: before it starts, there might be a config file some where with directory listings or something similar you could tweak or redirect it to where the file actualy is... is there a help.exe in the games root directory?... if the game was a zipped copy of a full install you might have problems since those old games sometimes had a very nit picky attitude to where they where installed and so it might be trying to access files from the layout of the original directory tree, if you get what i mean.
other than that
Havent used Dos in ages... :( so ive pretty much forgotten all the stuff i used to know and could do in it... :( someone mentioned making a boot disk you should try that out, although you\'ll probably have to fiddle with the Hymem(himem?) settings and all that annoying stuff in the config.sys of the boot disk... those where the days.
The avatar is a left over from me being part of teh dev team. Shhhhh though, I dont think they realise i still have one still, dont let them take away my special thing.

i think that line can either be found in your autoexec.bat or a cfg file in the game directory.
usually you can edit those settings in a sound.exe file that came with the game.
try changing the IRQ from 5 to 7 and if you can the Port to 220 (only if it isn\'t the music)

Well that just shows the pettyness, i think it must have been Vengence himself.
Oh you took my pride and joy... bah just proves to me (and possably to others here as well) your attitude. seeing as how you paid it no attention till i mentioned it (which also happens to be around teh same time i rebuked your post on elminsters overdraw post in the forum request board the other day or two).
Sad most sad indeed. Are you so petty?.
what next... should i say it, will i get banned from the forums?... **holds his breath for the possable out come of opening his mouth**
What little respect i still harboured for certain members, has fled... you do realiase i quite liked that avatar and havent got a backup of it. not that it matters i can make a better one if i had too.

Mod: Post deleted for deliberately trying to bait me. -Vengeance
CM, you have been warned. Criticism is fine. Deliberately trying to piss me off will get you banned.

And what have we learned boys and girls? Backup things you like.
Actually Bigfoot, I deleted your avatar after I read your insulting post in the elminister thread, not this one. I didn\'t even see this one. And I didn\'t delete it because I was angry about it. I simply thought it demonstrated to all involved that you are not a dev team member and never will be again, so you shouldn\'t have an avatar.
That\'s only fair isn\'t it?

Hell Yes! And don\'t you forget it Hippy!

umm... anyways, I got the game to work!! I had to DL a program called \"quick and easy\". This program modifies a lot of older games, including fate of atlantis, so that they work on XP. If your interested go here (http://www.theindyexperience.com/foa.shtml)

*Ponders why some clever guy doesn\'t make a DOS emulator for windows. That would run the games without nitpicky DOS stuff, and as a window program not a console, so you could do stuff like CopyPaste stuff back and forth.
But DOS can be downloaded for free and leagally...
How was Bill convinced t do that?!?!?!

He wasnt and it isnt. It is my belief that MS-DOS is still under the old Microsoft licence rules. I dont think they really bothered about a few people using pirate copies to run ancient games though.
There are of course clones of dos which can be used free and legal. http://www.google.com

i know there are some open-sourced dos emulators that run in linux, but since they\'re open i think that there\'s also a win* version ....probably ...if not just compile it from source :D
