We are doing some maintenance on the PlaneShift server, so at the present time you cannot play the game.
The server will be offline for the next day or so.

Any details available what kind of "maintenance" it is? Database preparations? Code changes?

Second time in a row I went on the forums and found this message. :|
I must have bad karma or something. :-\
-
The day I choose to download and play the game, there's maintenance going on :P
Just my luck :) Can't wait to play the game.
-
I'm lucky, I did it yesterday!
:)
-
hardware :)
hardware may not even be an issue, but then again, it might. we are at nearly 8 hours now, (for those that can't subtract 8) ). Take your time guys, maintenance is appreciated, and we look forward to enjoying your hardwork.
-
Lol Canghiu, are you enjoying PlaneShift?
I am so impatient to play this game! :) Watching some awful drama about Jane Austen on BBC 1 and eating chocolate.
Take your time, developers; I can wait all night :P
-
O.O Hardware...
Hope it is an upgrade or something :D
Also hope that the server isn't messed up :(
Oh BTW, Lux, you're gonna love it!
-
Here's something you can read while you wait (http://www.planeshift.it/setting.html).

Cahngui!? :o
Nice to see you around! \\o//

Already read it, start to finish :P

Hello everyone! I just downloaded the game today, and noticed that the server is down when i tryed to create an account. It's good to see that there are many people out there playing this game. I found this game while searching for a MMORPG game for my laptop runing Ubuntu 8.04 >o) I can't wait to play it, i watched the video it looks awesome! Hope i won't have any video problems with my crappy Intel GFX processor.

Jesus...I've already read about 4 books today. Are you people just trying to drown me in literature??!!!
-
Hello,
Just wondering... how goes the upgrade*..
...Is the server likely to be back soon, or is it now going to be out of action for some time?
XW
*edit* -- it *is* an upgrade right?, or are you repairing something?
-
soon(tm). always soon(tm) but the folk are workign on it so chould be up soon.

Patience is a virtue,
And virtue is a grace,
But when these two should coincide
They slap each other's face.
-
Yes it is an upgrade and it's going well. ETA is in the next 12 hours or so - it's a rather big upgrade so we need to set up everything again.
-
Oh fiddlesticks! But good luck chaps, keep soldiering on....

Glad to hear things are going well. but 6-8 is now around 22 hours from start to finish. Happy to wait, and thanks. Hmm, i wonder whats involved. an os reinstall is about an hour, plus setup, another hour, then setting up the server software, and other necessary tidbits. are you guy's coding while upgrading? Sorting out incompatibility issues? I also notices the laanx site is down, are you guy's upgrading that site too? What ever the case, always appreciate the updates you guy's post.

It's a bit more complicated than 'an hour here, an hour there' :) We have many gb's of data to transfer, convert, import etc. Most of it is done, we just need to sort out the last few things and get the DNS updated. Plus as usual there's a limited number of people with access to work on it, and when they sleep everything stops.
-
Sleep? SLEEP?!
Do not be nonsensical!
Developers do not sleep.
They live on coffee, cigarettes and their own forum superiority :D

Don't forget they live on the adrenaline from the rage they feel for those players who whine all the time! :P
-
For the record I have absolutely not whined atall in my many, many, MANY forum posts (all twelve of them) :)
-
This is certainly an interesting game. I for one don't mind when it must be taken taken for maintenance, updates, or other additions. The testing of new features or protocols requiring reboots and tweaking is also fine. javascript:void(0);

The quest system takes some getting used to. Granted I've not been playing very long. I often am stumped with what the NPC is looking for.

Oh, I wasn't trying to imply that it should be done yet. I was saying that there must be many steps in the update. I listed the obvious ones, but was curious about the not so obvious ones.

I would humbly submit that it would be better not to ask questions of the devs and others working on this. Having them give us reasons and updates and such only makes the process longer. Besides, the purpose of this thread was to inform, not explain.

to inform and discuss, otherwise it would have been locked. Besides, the devs that are actually doinf the update probably aren't watching the forum. I seriously doubt all 50 devs are doing the update, since only a few actually live in that particular country. Again, nobody is forcing the devs to do anything. BUt i myself am perfectly happy w/ the responses. I'm just participating in the community discussion.

/me suggests topic to be locked.
Actually, that might not be a good idea as people will probably start new threads about this if this thread is closed...
Also, i think Xordan is the 'main man' in this update seeing as he is the hardware guy. And he is right here starting the topic and posting in it.
Elois, that comment wasn't aimed at you, personally, just everyone.
So, to not be hypocritical, i will leave this topic :D

I don't know what extent he plays in this update, since he's based in the UK, and the server is in Singapore. That isn't to say he's not working on it, in contact w/ those that are working on it, or that discussion w/ him isn't making the update take longer. I'm merely saying, that I assume that since he's based in the UK, discussion w/ him, or any dev not working on the update, shouldn't be an issue, i assume this from a logical inference. Besides, the vast majority of discussion has been amongst community members.
edit
yikes, just looked at the first post again, we are now up to a day of downtime from 4 hours ago. I'm not complaining. And i'm grateful to the devs. Probably the update took longer than expected, and now they have to try to schedule more time out of their lives to complete the update. Take your time guys, put it up when you can, but your lives have to take precedence.

Elois

Yeah, I'm not doing any of the updating. I'm just sitting around doing nothing waiting for it to be finished off by the powers that be. Everything is done remotely from this point, so the guys (Fragnetics) who own the server have done their part. I can't give an ETA on when it'll be done, other than saying that it *should* be open to players by midnight tonight (GMT). Not having people working on it 24/7 is the main slowdown, there haven't been any issues so far (your characters are all safe and sound :D).

Aaah, I haven't been this excited about a game in quite a while :)
Went to bed at 1:30. Wake up at 7:00 after dreaming about game...
...but the server is still down. Alas! Alas! :D

Be patient. Server downtenancies usually take time :)

Happy happy! Joy joy!

ok, so around 6 hours and counting. unless it takes longer, which is fine too :)

I'll leak the new specs to give you something to read while you wait ;)
2x Dual Core Xeon 3.0ghz (4 logical)
2GB ram
320gb WD RE2
Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron LTS
A rather significant improvement over the old one :)

That used to be:
Server Specs:
* Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz
* Intel S845WD1-E Motherboard
* 1GB ECC Kingston PC2100 DDR-SDRAM
* 2x 80GB 7200rpm IDE Harddisks
* Running on Fedora Core 4
Does that mean we will find bugs twice as fast now? :)
Anyway, many thanks to Fragnetics I guess, for the upgrade!
-
Why Ubuntu? I do know Fedora 8 has cause a good deal of problems for some people and am not recommending it but I am curious given how many people have had problems with the client in Ubuntu. Are you planning on creating a .deb file for the client now? I suppose that has little to do with the server though.
Hmm Long Term Support (LTS) might have something to do with it...
-
:woot: so when is the server comeing back online?
-
Joombiel sits under a tree eating an apple. He picks up another book, reads......and waits for his friends to return.
-
Prolix, that server will run the PSserver, and not the client. ;) The server is just a console app.
-
It's ok that the server is down ;)
But maybe it would be a good idea to change the time estimate of 6-8 hours in the news section on the homepage :-X
And it could be good to have just some time estimate or nice just hear something about what is happening.. ::|
-
Well, of course, I realize that and that there is likely no graphical user interface (Xorg) installed so that a deb file is unlikely to be built for the client on that machine. It was an afterthought to the main question. A means of living up to my name, if you will. I had thought Ubuntu was more of a desktop distribution but I suppose they have server installs as well. Is the package management really preferable or is it more to do with repository configurations?
I guess this is more off than on topic though so I'll leave it at that.
-
But maybe it would be a good idea to change the time estimate of 6-8 hours in the news section on the homepage :-X
I vote for changing it to: "To be back soon(TM)" ;)
-
* Myysst figures it to be a typo, not 6-8 hours, but less than 68 hours lol...or, even more precisely, soon(tm)
*Myysst, having input his 2 tria, leaves to read a book, or failing that, watch something entertaining...
-
Yep, something like that..
That would be less misleading, and by that less irritating..

Maybe they are on Jupiter time or something like that again ;D
I'm sure you devels are doing your best, but keep us players in the loop ;)
-
Patience, children. All in good time. Complaining gets you nowhere! I am sure it will be worth the wait. Go read a book or do some homework. The original thread, before it was changed said, "Please don't wait." That in itself should tell you something, right?
-
I am for one not just complaining but trying to give a suggestion, for a later similar situation.
I am a new user, and did at first not know that I needed to go here for information about the server downtime. I just read the post about it on the main homepage, and was of course confused since the information was clearly not correct.
To avoid confusion or irritation they could update the information, put a link leading here, or write something about what they are going to do, and give no estimated time.
Since there is an estimated time on the homepage, it is easy to think that this will be somewhat close to that.
-
Given all the experiences from the past, I strongly believe that it would be best if no time scale at all would be given. As they seem to be wrong too often anyway, they are of no help and just confusing and/or frustrating if people expect them to be right.
-
I would recommend a link to this thread on the main page for more info in place of the 68 hour estimate. ;)
-
hey xordan, throw that old server my way, i could have some uses for it ;D :)
-
This thread seems to be an orchard...
-
There are certainly many apples in these parts. A good sign of the growth of our community!
Huzzah!
-
Hooray for us newbies \\o//
-
Who is this server, does he serve Talad. I do hope he hurrys up with his duties, The Hydlaa draw is in a few days and there are many citizens who have yet to buy tickets, don't spoil the fun.
[Eurac excercises some gratuitous self promotion on the sever thread. He he!]
-
I presume the server only serves one: The Mighty Bamboo!
And the Draw.. no joking, guys, I got the winning ticket here! ;D
-
*Joombiel awakes with a start, grips his daggers, and then relaxes. Only a rat poking through some discarded apple cores. He thinks about his friends that he has met in Yliakum. Hoping that they all will show up soon....he nods off and dreams of the conquests yet to come.*
-
locking thread.
people with updates will either Pm me to update the thread with important info, or they have the ability to reply to locked threads.
-
Server is up again!! Thanks to Fragnetics for providing a new hardware. The new machine is a dual core 3Ghz server.
Enjoy!
-
Just tried it and it says "failed", so (at least for me on a Mac) the server is *not* available :(
-
Server Status: Temp ip 203.81.44.246 port 13331 (add this info to your /data/servers.xml file) - Pingo will return when the server returns to normal.
Add following line to data/servers.xml (beneath the line for "Fragnetics"):
<server name="Laanx Temp" ip="203.81.44.246" port="13331" />
EDIT: Nevermind. Laanx is back on his old port now.
Have fun :)
