Title: Are introductions dead?
Post by: Prolix on May 10, 2008, 06:41:38 pm
It seems to me that these have been disabled, I see everyone's labels for the past few days. Has the system been recalled for corrections, abandoned for the time being, foregone completely or does this just affect me?

found this on http://planeshift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/planeshift/trunk/docs/history.txt (http://planeshift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/*checkout*/planeshift/trunk/docs/history.txt)

*** 2008-05-07 by Kenny Graunke
- Disable introduction system until a well thought out and approved system is
made. Right now it is trivially worked around, and simply alienating players.
This change done with the approval of Xillix.

This is really good news  \\o//

Finally... thanks to all for deactivating this thing again and also in general to devs for their work

Enjoy the breather, there is no guarantee the next implementation will be more to your liking. Naturally the development team will have taken stock of the previous system's successes and failures and apply them to the next generation. Looking forward to it.

N.B. I am in no way responsible for the previous annoying responses to my initial posting.

Yes! It was really obnoxious to see all the "Someones" on my chat window!

It appears so.
During one of my random 5 minute game appearances, I tried introducing myself to a smokin' hot Fenki, but it appears it did not work.

Was she standing in a forge?

I doubt very much it has receive the perma-death, it is just wandering in the Death Realm trying to find a portal.

I'll miss it too. Despite all the complaints I never really thought it was much of a problem, just a different thing. And yes, I did experience it with my player account and no, I had no problem at all not knowing who all those strangers were. Hopefully it will be worked on and reintroduced soon.

Now, it'll be interesting to see if roleplay increases as a result of this, since it was thought that this mech was killing it. Was it true? :detective:

Well, every time I've logged in, Hydlaa was in a state of uber quietness... That changed when I logged in a couple days ago, and it surprised me to see a ton of players in the tavern. I suppose the loss of the introduction system is why. I could see strangers being more friendly than before, and there weren't as much OOC chat about "[/introduce to me!]" and complaints of someones spamming people's screens.

Errr.. that's not quite what I meant. I liked it because of the funny conversations it came up with. such as

(19:16:06) Camazotz says: Hello, Orgonwukh
Orgonwukh says: [who's that someone?]
(19:16:47) Camazotz says: [which someone?]
(19:16:53) Orgonwukh says: [you someone :P]
(19:17:03) Izzabella says: [lol who is talking and sayign hi Orgonwukh ]
(19:17:04) Camazotz says: [Camazotz]
(19:17:13) Rinenud says: [Camazotz]

I hope to see this system again soon! I await its arrival, and by then hopefully there will still be some more confusion among the dreaded, feared,     someones!

Its... over... :)

Well, I think its a nice step.
And I still think that introductions are not good for PS, at least not in this state of developement. Maybe later.. but I hope next time the implementation will be considered wiser :)

Thanks devs  :flowers:

Ah, here I thought I had just gotten to know everyone and that is why I didn't see the someone's anymore.  Ah well, I'll try to introduce myself the old fashion way still, just to keep myself sharp...

To answer the initial question: one can only hope.

Why do you like the intro system? I'm interested to hear...

I always enjoyed running away when someone begged me to /introduce myself and "you can call me bud" wasn't good enough.

This system made me stop the most of my rp. That there were few (for me: exactly one) completely ooc situations where it is funny doesn't have something to do with increased rp that it apparently (should have) caused. And to be honest, I think all someone-jokes are already made now and not only once...

I still am happy that it got deactivated again and am curious to see the more well thought version (And if it won't come... Im comfy with that, too   ;D )

I miss this system.  Now that it's off, we have noob idiots who deserve bannage running around the game again.  I am finding myself using the report tool on more and more stoopid people.

One good thing about it being gone is that it is much easier to see bad character names to report ;)

...and how does that have anything to do with the intro system?

I suppose it could be coincidential, but it does force new people to realize that this is a role-playing intensive game and not some silly thing like WoW.  It forces people to roleplay, but I wouldn't say it encourages people to because it doesn't offer any incentive to roleplay apart from letting others know who "Someone" is.

One good thing about it being gone is that it is much easier to see bad character names to report ;)
Well yeah you are right, I didn't think of that one this time.

Yes really....
At least this kind which was there now. RP-killing.

+I think its nice like this... "/me describes Miaua" is way nicer then "He looks like (null)."  ::|
+Situations like "Hey! This is suspicious... How do you know my name?!?" Is nicer roleplay encouragement then "[please type /introduce with me targeted to tell my character your character's name]"
+As stated here... People finally chat again with eachother in taverns, plazas and is all nice again :)

Anyway...

Thanks for hearing us complainers devs :)
Next (if there will be any, and I'd survive without it for sure) introduction system should be something to recognise who you know and whom not(so ooc name info should stay), not to 'force' newbs to use names IC/OOC correctly with hiding it and giving harder times for good roleplayers.

*bow*

Btw... What did you introductions likers liked on it? There is still no reasonable answer yet, or did I miss it?  :whistling:

I liked it, but I'm glad to see it being withdrawn. In a way, it encouraged people to play their characters and add a little life to  conversations between strangers. However, it didn't seem to be developed enough to be usable, in my opinion. It simply needed some more work to be usable. It did kill some role plays, and was pretty bugged. It never seemed to stay introduced to anyone.

I look forward to its return when it works much better!  \\o//

Now that @£$€$ Example You see person in town. Do you know his/her name? NO. I Do think this could be offcourse done differently. Maeby examp. the following situtation. Someone named a gomes to person b. Person a ask for exm. could you tell me where is plaze x. in that point person a automatically introduses to person b. and the introduction would be there. then the person a would also in the sametime would ask the plaze x.
gee that was complex to write and prolly has full of typos ::|

No no no no... you don't get it...

'someone related jokes?' No. The things that weren't jokes were funnier.

Maybe it would have been a bit simplier if there was something like a command to introduce to everybody in a circle of XX meters around you. Like going into a pub in real life, jumping on a table and crying "Hey, my name is XXXX...." in the global silence. Some of my friends said me it's really funny to do   ::)

Wow, since I haven't been able to do anything but hang around at home (this sucks), I've been on PlaneShift way too much, and it seems to me that Hydlaa's always crowded (mostly the tavern). Strangers actually talk now.  \\o//
