I'm one of those explorer-roleplayer types out there and I enjoy playing a lot of games where I can just wander and admire nice landscapes, maybe even do a quest when I'm in the mood.
What I do not like is valgrinding, not that I don't do that sometimes, but I don't like it. I prefer a system where improving one's attributes comes naturally and not as a direct result of mining, get exp, train, level up.
Now... is there such a game out there? Online? Free? Roleplay oriented? Nice graphics? For Linux?
Not all conditions have to be met of course, but I'm just curious how many of these conditions can be met.
To give an example of what I'm talking about, yes, yes Morrowind and Oblivion of course. Which are very nice, but not online and I get really bored roleplaying by myself sometimes.

Ever tried Regnum Online?

http://regnumonlinegame.com/
Try it and post your review.
If you want Morrowind or Oblivion online, complain to Bethesda Softworks (http://www.bethsoft.com/). ;)
Of course, that doesn't mean that the existing and upcoming MMORPGs can't strive to be as fun (or better) online, at least in some features.
-
Regnum is a pure grindmachine. Don't go there. If you want to get off the grind machine early and experience beautiful landscapes then try Guild Wars (http://www.guildwars.com).
Guild Wars lets you grind to level 20 then you can do whatever you want with your character. And it's quick. The only backside is you have to unlock areas by doing quests. All the less Guild Wars is a beautiful game in which you can experience alot, and with a good guild you can easily finish the storyline quests in 2-3 days.

I hear elderscrollsonline.com is a registered domain now; of course that doesn't mean a whole lot. And yeah, they're both good games.

I've heard about the possibility to play Oblivion with two, by using a mod. Still have to see if there's any truth to it. Interaction with eachother is seriously limited though.
It's not completely multiplayer but going in the right direction at least.
The most eyestunning mmorpg is Guildwars but exploration-wise its not hugely attractive. You are limited to where you can explore. The game also still revolves around fighting things, though the storylines are interesting to follow.
It's hard to find games that don't revolve around grinding. ::)
-
Which, if any, of these games run on Linux?
-
I heard elderscrollsonline.com is now registered... Needless I am thrilled about the idea. :D
I like the idea behind Guild wars I might give it a shot sometime ;)
@Rayken With Wine I think they are able to run just fine, not sure about the networking aspect though.
-
Wine should be able to cover the network parts but wine installs are often...um, not fun. I'd prefer something that is native.
-
Yeah, I know what you mean...
Hey about these scenic thingies, I absolutely love The Endless Forest (http://tale-of-tales.com/TheEndlessForest/) concept and idea, but it's small. I want to roam like... more!

Don't listen to pessimism and don't give up so easily!
You've made this thread on May 25th and no one had a single suggestion for 5 days straight and probably never would. As soon as I recommended Regnum, someone's immediately trying to discourage you and recommends Guild Wars instead, a commercial game (no monthly fees but you have to pay for the original and each expansion), which is neither free nor is natively supported on Linux. Might as well recommend WoW instead. GW doesn't even consider itself to be an MMORPG. You did request "Online? Free? Roleplay oriented? Nice graphics? For Linux?" and "Scenic?", didn't you? My suggestion is the only one that meets most, if not all, the criteria, even if such criteria is only preferred and not required (otherwise, why bother mentioning it?). The point is that such thing exists and it's called Regnum Online!
In fact, Regnum is said to be the closest free Linux MMORPG to Guild Wars in gameplay. Even its webpage has similarities to the GW webpage. Not only is it a competitor to other free Linux MMORPGs but also to Guild Wars in some ways. Google for its reviews - most people place it as the best free Linux MMORPG out there at this point, so the reaction to my suggestion on this forum isn't really surprising. And while the game is a grind, it's still less of a grind than any other free Linux MMORPG and is a much more complete and frequently updated product. Check the The Linux Game Tome (http://happypenguin.org/) for extensive player reviews on Regnum. Majority place it on top of free Linux MMORPGs.
If you're willing to pay for an MMORPG and run it through Wine, then there are better commercial games than Guild Wars with better customization and less grind. WoW's success alone speaks for itself. LOTRO is very popular as well. Just because Guild Wars may have less of a grind than some free games, don't be fooled into thinking that it has no grind at all. It has a grind like any other "MMO". In fact, it doesn't even consider itself as an MMORPG because majority of things are instanced (it's how it claims to have "less grind" than some games). That also means you won't be seeing as many people around when exploring and questing as in other MMORPGs (didn't you say you got "lonely"?). ;)
Make no mistake, I'm not trying to convince you to play Regnum and nothing else. You're the one who asked for advice. I don't run Linux as a primary OS and I don't care what you play, especially if money comes into picture. I've only posted a suggestion and this reply because of the ongoing discussion so far.
Having said that, I'll be playing something else entirely, something that is still in closed beta at this point but is nearing its release. :P
PS Yes, I'm aware of "elderscrollsonline.com", which, by the way, is only registered until 2009 so far. It doesn't mean anything at this point. There MAY be an MMORPG in the works, which is great but it may be a long wait and it isn't there now.

To follow up on your argument, Abyssion, which you so elaborately wrote. I'm not an idle visitor to this forum and only found this thread when I read through the "Hydlaa Plaza" section. Your point is thereby undermined a bit but my earlier experiences with Regnum could've played into me expressing my opinion.
I've played Regnum. It's a moderately beautiful game. It's not more nice to look at than Planeshift. To advance in level, and to not be attacked by aggros, you must grind and do grinding quests. You don't get far without grinding and you don't get much fun without grinding. Guild Wars is a short grind. Sure, it costs a start few, but it's a more beautiful game and the team's really doing a good job using an original concept.
-
Oh well, will give them both a shot, got nothing to lose anyway. Thank you for the ideas folks!
And I didn't say I was getting lonely, just bored. :P
-
I <3 Guild Wars
Yeah the grind is REALLY short and the quests arent too bad..in fact i managed to level quite quickly just doing quests and killing the mobs on the way TO the quests :D
The maps are also gigantic!! There is so much to see and explore :)
P.S. I even got it to work on a mac :D
-
Please clarify: You have a Macintosh version of Guild Wars, or you were able to run it on a new Macintosh with Windows loaded?
-
I actually downloaded Crossover and i was able to download the demo of GW and run it through crossover on my mac (and yes a new mac)
-
Age of Conan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSD4wM7C14Y) appears to have some sweet scenery.
Can't check it out myself until I upgrade my 'puter, though. Bugger :\
-
What I thought could be fun is: Play one of these level-up-focused MMORPGS, but just don't level up all the time. Just roleplay. Maybe that's even more fun in a group.
-
Well, it doesn't really meet many of the requirements, but Shadow of Colossus is an awesome game for scenic stuff.
I haven't played it yet myself, but from what I've hear, it really is a great game. It's basically an exploration game with boss battles.. that's what I'm told, anyway. xD
Also, I just noticed that apparently it is for the PS2... but I got the impression my friend was playing it on his computer. Maybe you can get it for both? I dunno, ether way, you gotta play this game if you haven't already. :P (Though I'm not sure if it's hard to find these days or not...)
Maybe I can beg my friend to let me play it at his house. :'( *really loves this game*

From what I've seen Shaiya (http://shaiya.aeriagames.com/) has some nice environments. I've managed to get it to work under linux with wine (though I had to get some stuff via winetricks (IIRC DirectX9 and probably Mono/VCR stuffs as well) to keep it from crashing too frequently)
Edit: Ah yeah, right. I forgot to mention the game's anti cheating protection is pretty much a root kit (Check GameGuard on Wikipedia to get more info about that)

I don't think any legal version was released for PC ;), but SoC is surprisingly good. Most of the game consists of walking around a very scenic area by the sea, then finding giant monsters, climbing them and stabbing them to death. If you want scenic, it's amazing!

A longtime PS guild mate I know recently went to Shaiya. They really like it. We were also in Minions of Mirth for a while, which has beautiful outdoors and weather, and the basic client is free. So if you just want to roleplay and not level, Mirth has some nice spots. Another guildmate I play Mirth with is running it under Wine as well. Thank you, Anumesa. And thanks to Cyl for the mention of the rootkit in that game.
