This is not a complaint against the game this time, but against the players.
Why are guildhouses closed?
Don't they the have private quarters (that can be locked themselves) and public rooms? Well, given the case, I would assume not, but I find it very disturbing that all the guild houses I've tried to enter (all over Hydlaa and Ojaveda) were closed shut. If that is the case, recruiting isn't making use of a big in game advantage, RP is confined to closed quarters as well so I'm confused. I honestly find this very awkward. I've been here ever since the beginning of guildhouses and never saw one or was ever invited inside. If they are not even partially open to the public, why have guild houses at all?
-
Guild houses are just one room at the moment, and the guilds store items in the guild houses. Opening them to them public would mean that they cannot store their items because people would just take them. Perhaps in the future when guild houses are more developed, they'll be able to be open to the public, and only have certain private rooms.

I'm sorry to hear you have no friends in the 20 or so major guilds that own a house. ;D
Personally, I don't think you should file a complaint about that
If you want to know how the houses look like, go find the Octarch's residency near Kada-El tavern

Like Eliseth said, guildhouses are used for storage. Since it's not possible to only allow certain guildmembers to move things in a guildhouse, the only alternative is controlled access.
I can't speak for the others but the Dark Empire's Headquarters is always visitable, as long as it's populated. (in an RP sense)
Do a /who imperial followed by a /tell X /me knocks on the door of the Headquarters. And if there is someone inside they'll probably come take a look. Not all Imperials have free access to the guildhouse though. Whether they let you in, depends a lot on yourself. I suggest not appearing at the door with a dark cloak and/or armed to the teeth. :P

There was an open house yesterday as the flea market was hosted in a guild house. I do know what you mean about them being closed all the time as I had never been in one before that either though I had been to visit the octarch which is pretty much the same thing. You are not missing much except perhaps the people hiding in there, they look pretty nice but are not very big and if you have seen one you have seen them all except for any furnishings the guild may have brought in.

Oh but I can complain about anything I like :P Seriously now, whenever I'm on, there's absolutely noone near the guildhouses. Must be a timezone thing.

I didn't take into account this part... it makes sense now, although I dislike the usage altogether. Isn't the banking system working for storage as well?

Furninshings? Nice!
@ Zan I'll put on my best uniform as former ambassador :)))

...
No. Thats why guild houses are used as a storage hall mostly. Even if you use alt chars as storage chars, its handy to have an rea where you can drop your belongings without having to fear that they will be picked up.
-
People hang around inside guild houses, not so much outside ;)
-
Even if there is alternative storage, the guildhouses should be decorated with many furniture pieces and other items.
I suggest we request guildhouse decorating (read: picking up and moving items inside the guildhouse map.) becomes a guild priviledge. Just like the ability to invite guild members or all those other rank specific priviledges in the guild tab. By being able to set that effectively I'd gladly open up our guildhouse. If I'd do it right now, everything inside would be gone within the day.

Why are guildhouses closed?
Well, is your house open to the public?
-
I don't have a house in PlaneShift. A guildhouse is something different than a normal house of course so the question does not apply to the situation.
Looks to me the question brought up a bit more than just the player reasons. I can now understand why it they are closed, but it is also true that right now they are not used at their full value (RP or otherwise).

That makes sense. I would also suggest to make available inside rooms, and the ability to lock private guild quarters from the public area - the entry hall.
But we're turning this into a wishlist idea already :)
For the record I've visited the Octarch's house yesterday and I know how a guildhouse looks like on the interior. Thanks Semutara! ;)

You want to be invited into a guildhouse? -- Then ask the owners nicely. I believe many (if they know and trust you) may allow you to have a visit, especially with a roleplayed purpose.
-
May I invite myself to a guild house by means of skillfully bypassing the lock of the front door? ;D I even promise that I won't break anything. ::) Sorry, I could not resist.
-
Well, would you believe that anyone would invite Marqsaynt into his house? -- Lolitra did so, trusting in her wards... ;)
-
I'm not trying to get into a guildhouse, I was complaining on the fact that all of them were closed when I went to on serveral occasions. I've found the reason for it by now ;) and also visited the Orctarch's house. Now I know how it looks like.
As for roleplaying my way in, no problem with that, if I can find anyone online when I'm on. The guildhouse areas look deserted most of the times.

Brings up a good idea: a door knocking button on the context menu of the guild door. I'll post in on the bug tracker as a feature request.
-
To realise that, it would have to send a (system or main) message to everyone inside?
Storing a relation to a guild may be more interesting, but not as credible.
Anyway, I vote for that too.

I would think a /shout to the guild hall instance would suffice.
