Title: Evil is Unchecked
Post by: The Web on June 15, 2008, 07:42:44 pm
Is it just me. Or are there fewer and fewer good characters around?

Hmmm.... Maybe too many people made evil alts and now the situation is reversed.

If you ask such a question you have to define "good" and "evil" first.

I'm not evil, none of me are! We are not particularly good either but we are more likely to be mistaken for it.

People are tired of dealing with magic flying left and right in the tavern. The guards should be dealing with these things, not vigilantes.

Also not evil... though... if you look at faction points it might look _very_ different  ::|

Hmm, I thought everyone was a bunch of goody two-shoes... What do you mean by evil, Mr. Web?

If you ask such a question you have to define "good" and "evil" first.
Good:

"That which possesses desirable qualities, promotes
   success, welfare, or happiness, is serviceable, fit,
   excellent, kind, benevolent, etc.; -- opposed to evil.
"

"Kind; benevolent; humane; merciful; gracious; polite;
   propitious; friendly; well-disposed; -- often followed by
   to or toward, also formerly by unto.
"

"Possessing moral excellence or virtue; virtuous; pious;
   religious; -- said of persons or actions.
"

Evil:

"Having qualities tending to injury and mischief; having a
   nature or properties which tend to badness; mischievous;
   not good; worthless or deleterious; poor; as, an evil
   beast; and evil plant; an evil crop.
"

"Producing or threatening sorrow, distress, injury, or
   calamity; unpropitious; calamitous; as, evil tidings; evil
   arrows; evil days.
"

"Anything which impairs the happiness of a being or
   deprives a being of any good; anything which causes
   suffering of any kind to sentient beings; injury;
   mischief; harm; -- opposed to {good}.
"

"Moral badness, or the deviation of a moral being from the
   principles of virtue imposed by conscience, or by the will
   of the Supreme Being, or by the principles of a lawful
   human authority; disposition to do wrong; moral offence;
   wickedness; depravity.
"

The Guy doesn't have time to deal with petty evil. :P

It's not a matter of good or evil ... it's a matter of everyone being bored and looking for conflict. Good guys or evil guys, they all want to fight. Which leads us to the conclusion that good or evil aren't really all that different on a game.

I still find the good-evil distinction rather meaningless. It makes little sense since the only way to progress in-game is by beating up things.

could be that adding to "darker" gods and one area for such may have helped the "utopia" problem everyone was crying about.

Either my PSing hours are de-synchronized or I'm totally blind to evil.. or maybe I'm too busy diggin' whenever I'm online...

I have not encountered one single evil character (that I had no prior knowledge of) in ages!

I'm also waiting for a definition by the thread's poster.

Even tho, I'd like to applaud any attempt to develop a truly evil char by any player.. I've tried and it is so hard, that only thing I can do is dig and train hoping the day will come. And that may not even happen.

It's not a matter of good or evil ...
...It makes little sense since the only way to progress in-game is by beating up things.

Btw, I totally agree, Zan.. as unagreable as an evil char may be.. ;-)

I think that old players not playing as much (if at all) and new players filling their place is partly responsible. There are in fact way more bad/evil characters than there used to be. I think it springs from the notion that the only fun/complex characters are bad/evil characters. I don't think a lot of new RPers understand how much effort goes into making and RPing a BELIEVABLE good character. It's more than always "being good" and killing "bad guys".  :sweatdrop:

I haven't ever really found any completely evil characters in PS recently (probably because my definition of evil is rather skewed), but I've seen a lot of "bad" characters running around. "Bad" meaning that the character can also be good, but just doesn't follow the rules. Which is kind of annoying since you have a bunch of "heroes" assaulting people who they think have done things, and somehow they avoid the guards... even though they're in a position that would probably leave them on a megara flying toward the Crystal...

But I haven't been playing for a while, so I could be wrong.

I've seen quite a few evil characters running around, and it DOES seem like there are very few good characters left. I guess it just depends on who you RP with and what plotlines you're involved in.

Pure evil characters would either be seen as noobs for fighting and cursing all the time or be banned from planeshift because they grief too many players.  Again, I say .. being completely evil or good is unrealistic and shows no depth of character. :P

We're all shades of grey, though I admit the darker shades of grey are more succesful in-game lately. The darker religions could have something to do with it, along with the lack of government endorsed conflict. The latter causes people to go against the law and the government to find conflict and automatically labels them as rebellious, lawless and bad.
