Title: Server being upgraded...(.4.01) June 30, 2008
Post by: TDB on June 29, 2008, 05:11:33 pm
FYI...

(09:28:14) >Server Admin: server will shutdown in 1 minute for upgrade
(09:28:28) >Server Admin: SERVER WILL BE UPGRADED TO 0.4.01 RELEASE
(09:28:44) >Server Admin: YOU WILL NEED A NEW CLIENT TO CONNECT TO IT
(09:28:46) >Server Admin: SEE YOU IN THE NEXT RELEASE

And from IRC just now (10:30 Monday "server time", 2:30 utc)...
(09:32:49 PM) XilliX: NO ONE IS SUPPOSED TO LOG ON
(09:32:57 PM) XilliX: give it a rest
(09:33:09 PM) XilliX: if we can get it running we may be able to debug it

(12:20:54 AM) XilliX: everyone can log on as much as they want now
...but note that it sounds like the server is still crashing every couple minutes.

That's "new client" as in "use the updater", not as in "reinstall everything":
No false rumours ;)

Velh: It's quite simple, the updater tool takes your old client, and upgrades it to the "new client" :)

And in a different thread, we see that it's probably safer to wait for the official announcement:
it'd be safer to not run the updater until it is announced it could be used.

you're probably going to have to re-install now.  might as well just wait until the new client packages are released.

Yup. Laanx is crashing during startup because of something, and it can only be fixed when a dev takes a look at it. And that will be tomorrow, some time.

Awww...  :'(  Does anybody know when will this "next release" be available for Linux?

(09:28:44) >Server Admin: YOU WILL NEED A NEW CLIENT TO CONNECT TO IT

Who knows where/when this new client can be downloaded?

Because an update doesn't seem to work. After an update with the updater I get the note:
"This application has failed to start because OpenAL32.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Or am I just not patient enough...  :-[

It's quite unpredictable when will the packaged clients be available for download, but as usual I expect the clients for all of the platforms to be free to download from the same time on, without much delay for each.
Just have a look on these forums here now and then for any news..

EDIT:
You will need to download the new client, as usual using the psupdater wont be enough.

Stay patient guys, it'll all be good in the end...

Aww, why have an updater then?

For windows, the updater works fine (for me and others),
download size is ~60 MB.
And Xordan is fixing the missing dll to the updater files.

I'm waiting on pins an needles (and crossing my fingers to see a Mac version) ...  :sweatdrop:

..sounds confusing to me then.

As long as it will work by updating though..

The updater increments 4.00 to 4.01  :)

Hi all
Just to say that i launched the updater on linux, and it worked.
Downloaded about 60Mio like said for Windows and the game launch, saying well that the version is 0.4.01

Hope the server will be back soon :)

wow, indeed worked here too!

I have a question though: Am I presuming correctly that this 0.4.01 wont be compatible to any private server that was compatible to 0.4.00 clients? (latest cs or cel or what heck..)
Just curious in case Laanx will be down for longer..

Updater worked here too, now with the .dll added. (Windows XP)

4.01 is a fact.

@Kahara: After fixing the updater, it worked for me, too. Though it failed to patch a lot of files (probably damaged during the failed updated) and decided to download them to get the situation corrected.

@devs: I liked that the updater was smart enough to download instead of attempting a patch. Most commercial software requires a full reinstall in such a situation.
I disliked that there was a time window during which the updater would wedge itself if run.

@Minks: I can confirm that now. My client now says it is 0.4.01 (not 0.4.00.1 as announced in the /worldshout).

@Velh: You'll have to try the new client with the old server and see whether it will work. The announcement didn't say anything about that combination.
However, supporting thing kind of compatibility usually requires additional, hard-to-debug coding, so I'm sharing your assumption that it won't work.

There are several net bumps so the new client will NOT work with the old server.

Is the Mac updater supposed to be an application? When I open the updater, it opens a few files to revert back to, but doesn't do anything else. When I open it again, it just replaces the old backup files. Either way, the client does not appear to have been updated. Should I simply reinstall?

The Mac updater doesn't appear to do anything...  If you look at the XML file created it points to: http://www.xordan.com/downloads.html  (OSX version is a 344MB download)...  however it doesn't work  :'(

  For Windows Users only - -

Just a note for those like myself to who tried to update right after the annoucement and had nothing but problems, I would suggest backing up and special files and reinstalling, then updating again. That did work for me and it is 4.01 as stated above. I did have an issue with the OpenAL32.dll which was located in the PS folder. It didn't seem to like that so I renamed it. I had an earlier version of that file and it works fine. Now I just need the server to come back and hope it all works ok.

If you need a different openal32.dll file, I put one at this location: http://www.filefactory.com/file/e81c55/n/OpenAL32_dll  (sorry for any popups)

Often the server is down because the software crashed due to bugs, and it will restart soon. This time it is down because it is upgraded to a new version. How long this takes, depends on how many problems are found :) Sometimes it is only hours, but it may easily take a day (or more if there are really problems). A new release may mean new stuff though and will fix some bugs, so this is a good thing :)

I couldn't help but notice that when I ran the updater again, it reverted back to an earlier openAL32.dll. Funny how its the same one I had  :-X

You are all doing a great job btw. I am sure all of the PS community appreciates all the work the programers/testers/everyone is doing. Updates are good! Things that work properly are even better  \\o//

That's exactly what was to be expected.
The installer checksums all files of the installation. Those that have an unexpected checksum are replaced with files from the PS server. IOW the updater nails your installation to what the server expects to see, regardless of DLL version.

(It's good they do it that way. A newer version of openAL32.dll might be incompatible with the way PS uses it, resulting in bugs that are hard to reproduce because the dev has a different DLL and isn't aware of that fact. This situation is part of what's known as "DLL hell" in Windows developer circles.)

Use the updater tool, miguel.
Before doing that, check this: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32812.msg378346;topicseen#msg378346

it depends on how many problems they run into. you can download it on the download page on the main site http://www.planeshift.it/download.html , the news page, or just use the updater

Funny thing is - I didn't have that .dll file on my system at all (but PS worked just fine in 0.4). Tried to run the updater, the updater updated itself and then refused further work. Just got a misspelled error message that told me all and nothing. That's windows for you. ;-)
Well, that was yesterday evening after reading postings here that it should work for windows. Duh.

So - new client download for me later today I guess.

I don't need to know how many hours it takes, but when the server works again (definitly works) someone reply " hey the server works again",cause i saw many times server switched on "on" status but always when I log-in server came offline.
thanks for answers

We are working on a bug and the server is up and down due to small bugs that were found. in time the server will become stable again.
