Title: PlaneShift 0.4.01 Is Released!
Post by: ThomPhoenix on June 30, 2008, 01:49:16 am
(http://darkempire.xordan.com/images/PS-SB.png)
PlaneShift version 0.4.01 has arrived!

How To Get:
Open the psupdater tool, and wait until it's done updating PlaneShift. After that, launch the game.
If you have issues updating, open the updaterinfo.xml file in the PlaneShift directory, remove everything between the <client></client> tags except for the first entry, save the file, and restart the updater.

Alternatively, download locations:
Windows 32 bit. (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01.exe)
Linux x86 (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-x86.bin)
Linux x64 (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-x64.bin)
Mac OS-X (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-OSX.zip)
Mac OS-X 10.3.9 (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-OSX10.3.9.zip)

And, the Torrents:
Windows 32 bit. (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01.exe.torrent)
Linux x86 (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-x86.bin.torrent)
Linux x64 (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-x64.bin.torrent)
Mac OS-X (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-OSX.zip.torrent)
Mac OS-X 10.3.9 (http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.01-OSX10.3.9.zip.torrent)

Note: After downloading the full client, you will still need to use the updater to get some last-minute fixes. However, there was a mistake in the updaterinfo.xml file in the packages. You need to open updaterinfo.xml and change the top line to say "true" instead of "false". Save the file, restart the updater and all should be fine.

Corrupted Installation: You have updated PlaneShift to the latest version, but still it won't start. The updater really says there are no more updates available. What now? It's possible some files in your install became corrupted. To fix this, there is a function called CheckIntegrity.
On Windows: Press Start and then Run. Paste "C:\Program Files\PlaneShift Steel Blue\psupdater.exe CheckIntegrity" and press OK. If your PlaneShift is not installed into C:\Program Files\ change the command accordingly.
On Mac: Open terminal and then paste and execute "cd /Applications/PlaneShift" and then paste and execute "./psupdater.app/Contents/MacOS/psupdater_static CheckIntegrity"
On Linux: Open console and then paste and execute "./psupdater CheckIntegrity"

Also note that the server will likely be unstable in the first days after this release as many users try to access the game server and new issues are found. Regardless, enjoy!

And now, the many Changes!

Special Thanks:
- Special thanks for the Testing and Engine teams and prospects: With increased communication between players and the testing and engine teams 634 bugs (including 118 feature requests) were opened and 476 bugs were closed (including 52 feature requests)!

- Some users may encounter strange map displacement on map crossings.
- Some of the various spells that have been broken for a year, have been fixed. The ones that are still broken, will be dealt with soon. We hope.
- We implemented some really good bugs, but then we lost them. If you find them and bring them back to us, we will be very grateful!

Notes:
For the people who want different in-game settings per-account or per-character. You can make multiple shorcuts and add "-cfgset=PlaneShift.UserConfigPath=/path/to/wherever" to the shortcut target. This way you can have multiple user-config directories and choose which one PlaneShift should use when launching your client.

Yup. Laanx is crashing during startup because of something, and it can only be fixed when a dev takes a look at it. And that will be tomorrow, some time.

If you're in to Text-based multiplayer RPGs, you might try Roachia (http://roachyrpg.proboards50.com/)

You can try Regnum : http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/
That's the one i played before coming to PS and I really enjoyed it, but at high lv it's a bit boring I think
It's free (but not open source, and you can buy some object with real money, like XP boosters and horses)

You no longer have to type book0.txt when loading books. After saving a book, you can load it back by the book's name at the time of saving! I can load books as 'The Death Realm,' or 'Gurgontid!'  \\o//

hm, I have a graphics bug on my mac since 0.4.01 that I have not read of before.
On those few occasions I was able to connect, textures of characters in the character
screen were badly damaged (seems to be all races, ylian, fenki, nolthr. female, etc.).

I have done steps in the read-me, and downloaded 0.4.01 then fixed the updater to
=true, then updated to 0.4.015.

Hardware, mac G3, AtiRadeon Mobility 7500, 640MbRAM, etc.

is this a bug?

regards, player_of_games.

I want to signal a new bug in this update, and very critical this one : When i crash, my char stays zombie until next server reboot
Before the update, all was fine, when I crashed i just had to wait 30 sec and i could log in again.
But now even after 15 min my char is still "already logged". I tested with an alt and I could /tell him

I hope this is only a server issue that will be fixed when it's more stable (that's why i don't make a bug repart now, let's wait and see), otherwise it's a major thing to patch as soon as possible since crashes are not rare (if you want to reproduce it, just "killall -9 psclient.bin" like a big barbarian and you'll see you won't be able to relog)

It is known (http://www.hydlaa.com/flyspray_upgrade/index.php?do=details&task_id=1777).  In the meantime, just ask a GM to kick him.

hm, not to want to repost, but anyone give me a hint as to my issue
a few posts back: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32814.msg378891#msg378891
is it a bug or a known or temporary issue of some kind? Thanks.

update1:
worked somehow after my before-last connect, don't know why.

update2:
Problem back after my last log-in. Before further asking about this, I will try
to look at the logs of the good trial and the bad trial and see if there is a
conceivable difference during load.

I know campfires and mobile lightsources are all fancy and very good for atmosphere and all (not to forget the numerous players' demands for such) .. but still I am wondering:

According to race descriptions (http://docs.huihoo.com/planeshift/guide/setting-races.html) every race except for ylian and xacha either has nightvision or infravision.
What are your visions about how to proceed working on that for the future? One day players with ylian and xacha chars having the game appearing like it is today, while players with nightvision chars some green-tinted appearance, ones with infravision-chars some sort of ir-view?

Furthermore: Races with infravision, do they only see infrared-like, or is their normal vision just added by some heat-signature? Or is infravision meaning something complete different?
And finally: RPing chars with nightvision.. would they see any value in torches for their own benefit? Do they have any need for such at all?

I haven't really had time to run around much in this new release yet and see all the new stuff...

HOWEVERRRR, one HUGE thing that i did notice was the complete and utter lack of lag. I have yet to test all the maps yet, but in my old client, almost all of hydlaa (east hydlaa, plaza, winch etc.) was literally unplayable because of the ridiculous amount of lag. I ended up switching all those maps for edited ones, or old ones just to make it possible to move an inch. When i logged into 0.4.01 for the first time i ran through all these places effortlessly!!!

I dont know what got changed but i love it!!!!!!! (mac client)

yay devs!   \\o// \\o// \\o//

I'm lagging in other areas now though  :'( (ojaroad 2 and bdroad 2). However, not sooo much like before at BD.

And we can't climb any more!  :(

Got a short chance to download and give this a try last night. The Macintosh installer is professional looking now, and seems to be addressing permissions issues with the items it installs. Very nice. The game is now running without the massive lag that I experience throughout the last version. Very, very nice on that one. Books have their titles now. Also very nice. Looks like a good job folks.

I am very short on time so I am going to mention these two things here. 1) I bought a new book from Jayose, but did not have the buttons to write in the book. I checked a book that I bought before this update and it did have the buttons to edit the book. And 2) every male character I saw dwarf and xacha has grey hair now. My initial impression is that this release looks professional and has a much smoother feel to it.

Jeanine's beautiful blonde hair is grey now. :(

The game looks and feels entirely different. It's almost like it's a new game engine in use.

Still very, very buggy though. Last night i played for a few hours just to check out the new version, and i ran into numerous bugs, from the landscape showing sky through it, to entire sections lit in rainbow colors that caused crashes, to entire sections blacked out and devoid of all light. One odd example, my enforcer shield does not display on my screen(even if someone else has one equipped), but others can see it. Crafted shields i can see however.

I will say that the new fenki heavy armor looks awesome, and the lag reduction is fantastic.

Of course the first thing that struck me was how utterly empty hydlaa was. Harns was like a ghost town, even in the peak US playing hours.

Sure there are good thing in this update.
But it contains too many bugs to be playable. Here is a little compilation of what i've noticed :
  - Dwarves can't play : When you are somewhere (saying Hydlaa), /pos tells you are somewhere else (Gurg). So you can't interact with anything, trade,....game is broken for them, goodbye dwarves
  - Mobs are not attackables : That's a classic but it's been a long time now since we haven't seen a mob...
  - We don't know who trains what : When you go for a training, your skills window shows all your skills, so there is no way, without a spoiler list, to know what you can train
  - Phys Stamina bug : Not critical but annoying, when you stay still a moment, when you move again you phys stam drops dramatically
  - Crashes of the client : Many people reported IG crashes or freezes of their client, even after complete reinstall.

And I don't speak about graphical bugs, black holes, artefacts, .... who are secondary i think

I hope these bugs will be fixed soon so we can play again because for the moment there is no point for many players to stay IG

Kahara

PS : Don't misunderstand me, i don't complain, but i just point out few things that are critical and need to be fixed so the game can be playable and enjoyable. I'm not in a hurry or crying since i won't be playing for 2 months (hollydays) and when i'm back i'm confident all this will be fixed
Good luck devs

well, i really have an itch to play an mmorpg so does anyone know any good free ones?
You can try Regnum : http://www.regnumonline.com.ar/
That's the one i played before coming to PS and I really enjoyed it, but at high lv it's a bit boring I think
It's free (but not open source, and you can buy some object with real money, like XP boosters and horses)

Kahara
There are dozens of current and former PS players in Regnum. Almost all are in Syrtis realm, but there are a few in Alsius as well.

Just wanted to say thanks a lot to the team for the new release :)
*Orgonwukh smiles sweetly at Caarie "And I will not complain here, only on bugtracker."*

@ Kahara

for a temporary solution, try to sit down, stand up then jump, then try to interact with your dwarf char. This way you can avoid pyhs stamina bug also.

Wow!... Strange... it's been a bit quick this release...   Anyways it's great! And it's great that in the list there's Linux, too
Quote
There are still some bugs and issues to iron out, but I guess that was the quickest release ever!
Good job everyone!

The quickest but some  many annoying bugs seem not to make it the best anyway.
I know probably changes for better will come soon. But for now it's not seems to be the most fortunate release.
I have to admit that it's my first release so I can not compare it to others but still . .

I know you doing hard work out there, but I think old bugs were less annoying than new ones :[
Not mentioning all new features like books saving, climbing and other things.

Personally I think that in first line introducing new features should been made. For example implementing "new-old" skills, such as CLIMBING. LEATHERWORKING, ALCHEMY, HERBAL, NIGHTVISION and many others . . .
Not banning books saving, disabling "exploital climbing", or doing other strange things.
I always have been telling that power of PS is in rp, but now it seems that rp looses its "tools".
It looks like game mechanics became of more importance that gameplay features.

It's not the best option to say that :
"you players be happy with what you've got because you have got it for free . ."
Ok I agree, but let's act like a team. Where devs are making decisions but still they are thinking about players' fun as well, not only on their "craftwork"

I do not mean to insult or flame anybody, but I suggest :
"LETS ACT LIKE A TEAM"
not rivals or "who-has-right-again".

Lets build up the both sides of this remarkable project that PS indeed is.

Thank you ALL for creating PS how it is.

In other releases we had 2 weeks downtime and after that the server was still crashing, so in this respect we have an incredible improvement.

Full ack.
I even believe that a little direct talk amoung few people about why things were made like they are made and why some don't like it would help. Forum doesn't seem to be a good place for this and only pi*** both sides off...

Where is this personal folder to which books are saved. I ask because when I try to load ones already saved it seems to check for them there rather than the directory rendering them useless save for offline reading.

So . .?
I don't make prophecies but just making my private opinion. You don't have to agree with that. If forum isn't right place to make opinions then which place is, eh?

and only pi*** both sides off...
Why do you state your opinion as of "both sides" ? Are you representive for them?
If you pissed off by reading other people opinions why do you use forum anyway?@ all And I'd like to stress out the fact that I'm NOT complaining. It's just I can see a tension at "both sides" as every "side" trying to be of more importance than the other. It's just like a debate about which side of the coin is more important, heads or tails?
No matter if somebody disagrees we're both sides of PS medal.
There would be no PS players without PS devs, as well as there would be no PS devs without PS players.
So lets start to RESPECT the OTHER SIDE.
No matter if you dev, set team member, prospect team member, game master, forum moderator, forum member, hardcore roleplayer, leveller player, n00b or whoever you are or want to be.
Let's just make our best.

Where is an example how the current chatbubbles.xml works with all features?

All my text is black with a bright shadow and no outline .. Kind of hard to read. I can't seem to get rid of the black by configuring it.

Settings
-  Systemic increases to all quest rewards.
- All named NPCs now have one quest a piece.

Could somebody tell me what it is about? :)
Is that mean that quest now have random reward and each npc gives just one quest.? Or something else?

Sorry for maybe n00bish question, but I'm really interested.

I think better wording would have been "All named NPCs now have at least one quest a piece."

Not sure about the first part, you'd have to wait for one of the settings team members to respond.  :)

It means you learn and earn more doing quests now than before.

Thanks for the info.  :)

But I guess there won't be any recourse avaiable?  ::)

My alto is happy of that , my main character not at all  :P
;D

By the way, in some posts some new maps are mentioned. Is that confirmed and if something more is known about it?

new maps are what are you using now, that might mean that nothing but a relight was done to some.

Which can be quite handy. Once when i was in need for trias to finish my stats training, all NPCs were impervious and even mining not worked. My only way to get trias was to make quests.

O , I see. So there are no new locations? Or maybe some old locations with new features? :)

By the way I have to confess that new maps DO look like much better (e.g. bdroad2 has all textures now and it isnt walking through the dark valley anymore :) )
