The Guild of Research and Development
Purpose and Function
With the original idea by Doctor Kain, The Guild of Research and Development was formed to improve all aspects of life. Their base of operations is in the city of Hydlaa, where they believe in doing whatever is necessary for the betterment of mankind, and devote themselves to projects that can accomplish that goal. No matter what position one has in this Guild, they will always interact with others of the same or different positions, as the entire point of this Guild is for educated scientists to come together and aid each other in their goals. Their budget comes from selling their finished products, and is used to pay those that gather the resources necessary for the product to come to life, while some is pulled into personal funds.
Ranking
Created by Doctor Kain, the original Project Leader of the Guild of Research and Development, these ranks define its members and increase productivity.
Aspiring Scientist - These are the people who have an interest in the guild. They join under a trial period, displaying their skill and defining which rank they would best fall under after the aspiring period is over.
Gatherer - With good pay, these people gather the resources necessary for the Guild to continue productivity and research. Without them, all of the scientists under the Guild would have to look out for themselves, which isn't what the Guild is about.
Tinkerer - Educated workers of steel. Those under this rank tinker, as the name suggests, with many devices and contraptions. When their layouts and designs are finished, their work is moved to the High Tinkerers.
Chemist - Educated in all aspects of life. Those under this rank study magic, potions, and the makeup of everything in Yliakum. Study of the intelligent races is limited, as they are not allowed to be treated as the animals that are sometimes used in these studies.
High Gatherer - Those that are willing to go to greater lengths to find the materials necessary for studies. Those under this rank did some great work to get where they were, as there are some very risky aspects to what those in this rank are asked to acquire.
High Tinkerer - The most educated in the Guild's development processes. The finished works of the Tinkerers are brought to those under this rank for study and necessary improvements. Credit goes to the Tinkerer from which the idea and structure was derived.
High Chemist - Only those who show true affinity in one or all of the fields of the Chemist rank are accepted as High Chemists. At a whim, they may adopt the work of the Chemists if they find it of great interest.
Aspiring Leader - Chosen by the current Project Leader, those who fall under this rank show great promise, and will take over the work of the Project Leader if he or she is unable to continue. They must be skilled in both aspects of the Guild - mechanics and chemistry. The numbers in this rank are very limited, and only go as high as three.
Project Leader - The Project Leader is in control of all aspects of the Guild. When members are not working on individual projects, the Project Leader will assign them to a project they are best suited for.
The Application Process
In order to join the Guild of Research and Development, you must fill out a survey and hand it to the Project Leader or one of the Aspiring Leaders.
Name:
Age:
Skills:
Reason for Joining:
Past Projects:
Current Projects:
Once the survey is handed in, the Leaders will deliberate your position within the guild. This position is mostly permanent, unless there is a possibility of you being promoted to one of the High ranks.
Rules
IC
- If working on an individual project, it must be shared with the Project Leader and the Aspiring Leaders. If the majority does not approve, production must be discontinued.
- Your work must follow humane morals. If testing is to be done, it will be on either animals not protected by the Octarchy, or your own body. If unable to do either of these, you must ask to have your work adopted by the Leaders.
- If one of the gatherers is currently hired by another person, you cannot enlist them to help you. You are only allowed to hire a gatherer that is not busy, to avoid confusion.
- Gatherers must not tamper with the ingredients they are to find and deliver to the scientists. If found doing so, they will not receive payment and their service to the Guild will be discontinued.
OOC
- You must always stay in-character. If you must speak OOCly, use brackets.
- Guild chat is to remain OOC. If you wish to roleplay with each other, meet in person and do it, or use group chat.
- The guild isn't going to be responsible for your actions. If you upset some people with no reason, action will be taken to have you removed.
-
Nice, very nice. I can foresee close relations developing with the Imperial Scholars. Perhaps natural philosopher would fit better than chemist. Unless of course you're advocating a reductionist chemistry theory where all things are applied chemistry :P
-
As of right now, the guild hasn't been created yet. If you have an alt or something that could placehold, that'd be great. o/
-
I would help you out but short of making a third account I'm all out of slots.
-
I think I'll join, being interested in science (especially computer science) in real life. I'll send the application once I choose which account to use.
-
Hm...even though it took me a while to write this, I think I'm going to nip it in the bud right now. After some deep thought, I realize that the only way this guild could truly work is if it has full cooperation from settings, else it would venture more into science fiction, and be a pretty big mess to clean up. My imagination is a bit too vast for something like this, but if anyone else has interest in it and wants to run it, feel free to revise whatever you'd like to in the post, make a new thread about it, and create it. :)
-
Science was largely fiction up to near present day. Have you read any of the physical theories of the Greeks?
-
Not necessarily, but I myself don't know enough about science to properly roleplay it, especially in a game like this. :P
-
I will be honest and say that I know less about metaphysics than I would like but to the layman it appears to be speculation on the nature of the universe. While the scientific method is not observed at all I would have held any theory of truth to be an attempt at science regardless of it's success.
Anyway, what we need is gm confirmation on prevailing world views and the state of affairs as regards progress in the sciences. It must be high enough given the winches, yet purely practical given the lack of luxurious items.
-
Well, I had more in mind for the guild than what's written, which I won't really disclose. That, more or less, is what gives it the science fictiony feel. A lot of things involved the human body and magic - both of which, I know nothing about. :P
-
In order to work out our own world views we must know those of the people we would have grown up around though as that is what would shape our own.
-
What you need is for XilliX to come and tell you what he thinks ;o)
IMPO: I have issues with the obvious technology used in the Winch, I would be happier for it to be simply a slave driven wheel with pulleys rather than all the steel plating and control panels we see in game currently. (No disrespect to the moddler).
As for Chemistry, I see Alchemy. This is the comparison to RL that I see as more appropriate. Science, as it is now, is just an observation of the natural world, and Engineering is the harnessing of what is learned from physical sciences.
I want to stress this is a purely personal opinion and is not sanctioned by settings or the PS staff as an entity.
(I don't like that as a guild name btw :oS)
-
Pizik, of all things, the name bothers you? :P Personally, I thought it sounded more like a GUILD, than anything I've seen so far. :P
-
Hydlaa Foundation for Furthering of Research and Development?
-
That's extremely too long. You can only have 21-22 characters, I believe.
Would you prefer "Scientists of Yliakum"? :P
-
By Laanx, no!
I think his problem was the form. It could have easily been a warrior guild called Pillage and Rape. Go for something a little less comparable to death metal bands.
-
Really, I'm surprised. I didn't think the name was that bad. o_O
-
Its not that bad but is just a bad name for an organisation.
I suggest the Invisible College.

If they get a guild house they'd have to change to the Royal Society though :P
-
Sounds very good. Just some problems though: you're not meant to help mankind, more like the "sentient races." Else you won't get many friends amongst the non-human races.
If you already have projects running, be sure to mention them in the first post. It's important for people to see what you are already doing... And I am also curious in investment chances and cooperative work. The Dark Empire enjoys projects like this one.
Some talk about how you usually organize yourselves to work on projects could add some more interesting information to the post as well. For instance referring if you follow enterprises from the members and how they can start/manage them or if you accept proposes from the exterior and how your members are placed on the job. Just makes it look a lot more practical.
