Once again I was unable to attend a GM event because it was set at the most unfortunate time possible for european players who have a job in real life: Sunday evening. Of course it is convenient for american players and american Game Masters. But when the event started yesterday, it was already close to midnight in europe.
The time is not by most important issue. I am able to stay up even after midnight. Just not on a sunday, when I have to get up early in the morning the coming monday and get to my job. It would have been possible on a saturday instead. Or a friday. Just because a free day would follow, where I can sleep longer, and can afford staying up late.
Believe me, I know how hard it is to time a meeting across all time zones. The Knowledge Seekers guild meetings are just as complicated, having members in Europe, America and Asia. Therefore we always chose a saturday, to cover a weekend if possible.
-
...and others go to a disco on Friday or Saturday evening...others have to work on Saturday morning so Friday evening is out for them...etc.
Seems you cannot do it right for everyone. Btw. I have never taken part in any GM event, not in this MMO(RP)G and not in all the others I have tried. GM events are overrated in my eyes but some players seem to really need them. A solution would be to host GM events alternating at different times so that everyone has a chance to take part at least in some of them over the year.
-
I completely agree, with them being overrated that is. I've attended a couple GM events in the past, and well, I thoroughly don't like them. I can understand why they're there, and all the work that goes into to them, and I do appreciate that, but crowds really aren't my pot of soup. I try to make every post I make as detailed and eloquent as possible, and that works with the people I RP with, but not with enormous crowds.
And really, if you want an event for european players, why not make one yourself? So long as you take the time to think your event through, you can host a great RP too. The only difference between GM and player made events are that GMs have the ability to manipulate mechanics-- but it's not mechanics that makes RP fun, it's the people you're RPing with. Now I may be saying this just because I've been watching Eureka Seven recently but, "Don't beg for things, do it yourself, or else you won't get anything"
-
Don't forget the GMs are people with lives and jobs too, just like you. If you want this situation to improve, there should be more European event masters.
-
I remember having heard the same complaint from american timezone people some time ago ;D
I trust that gms have an eye on including all timezones over different events - naturally not all timezones can participate in every event, but as long as the overall events cover all timezones it is fine for me.

LigH,
I really wish you would re-title this thread. It is not about disliking Europeans. Most of our players are Europeans http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=28860.0;viewResults. As far as I know our head GM is European. If being part of GM events is hard for you then I would rather you ask if events could be posted here so you might know when they are scheduled.
Please rename this thread.
/me wishes some of my best friends from Europe would come back and play with me.
You of all people know how much I wish I could turn the clock back to get my friend back. This is not about hatred toward Europeans at all.
Regards to you LigH,
Mathy.

We have plenty of GMs from many different timezones. http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=23067.0
They do events when they are able to do events, and that's simply how it goes. No ones is being biased towards any particular region of the world.
If being part of GM events is hard for you then I would rather you ask if events could be posted here so you might know when they are scheduled.
Exact dates that event are going to go down won't be listed becuase then you have people show up just becuase they know something will go down, and it has nothing to do with what them being in character.

Some people just are not lucky at all (like me) but I asked Pizik why there weren't much GM events and he replied that there are GM events, they just don't wear the GM labels and people just avoid them.
Improve roleplay, make more GM events... At the end it's all up to us, the players.
Btw, player events are not THAT bad and I barely see any.
-
I think the original post made a valid point. The time zone is less important on days like friday or saturday. Thats allows people to take part in an event that goes until 3 am and sleep longer on sunday.
-
LigH,
I really wish you would re-title this thread.
I tried so. Hope it worked.

@ all:
Sorry for exaggerating -- I am emotional sometimes. :flowers:
The kernel is just what Zwenze said. All I hope for are better chances. Sundays are worse than saturdays when it gets late.

Is it just because of the long time this game has been in development... or some other reason... that the first reaction to criticism is often... "fix it yourself" or "it isn't broken"... or some other equally waspish response? The original post was simply asking for a little consideration of a day of the week. Title may have been inflammatory to some, but the meat of the argument was solid.
There is a term in my industry called "making decisions in a vacuum". What this means is that to the person making the decision, this is the greatest idea and it is implemented. What ends up happening, is that the other people involved get burned because they weren't part of the equation. This game has great potential, but if this is really only about what the devs or GMs or whatever want... and not about supporting the community that has rallied around the game... there really isn't a point to continuing the development.
Could someone explain to me why it would be a bad thing to announce GM events? I am not even sure what a GM event is, having never been a part of one. I am not usually on during peak times because of conflicts in RL.
-
I am all with announcing big events, ones that citizens couldnt miss or ignore, like in the recent case of that Stampede. But if all GM driven events would be announced, then making use of more secret green labels wouldnt make any sense. After all, why should small events be announced, sense wise? Things happen, you be around or not, thats the way it goes.
About the time to have major events set up, Sunday may not be the best time indeed (for me that is), I can understand LigH point of view. But I guess GMs will have to find a time most of them can participate as well, for it wont be a "big" one at all.
However, thats just my pov, people who are up for partaking only to get the rewards may not care about sense anyway, and their opinion seems to be as important.

Do all Europeans do things on Sunday nights?
-
Boo Hoo! What about Asia and Australia? We NEVER get 'primetime' events over here. Right now, the vast majority of PS players ARE FROM EUROPE!!!!
-
I don't talk about "all". Only about "possibly most". And I assume that possibly most people prefer to sleep after midnight if they need to get up early in the morning the next day.
We all have a real life. Some gamers may be jobless and don't care about the day, but others do have a job and only little time available for playing, and I guess they are more common. A few may have irregular shifts and prefer different daytimes, but others will have regular shifts, and I guess they are more common.
Tell you what: Let's make a poll! Let people chose in a multiple-choice poll which times they prefer for a roleplay! ... Hmm, how many options do you have as maximum? Can you part the weekend in slices of 3/4/6 hours each?
-
I support this idea. As a matter of fact I believe there should be more GM's from every timezone so that events can be organized in convenient times for everyone. Right now, the most dire situation is probably on the Asia/Pacific/Australia side, but I'm not so sure on the number of players from that geographical area.
Given the title of the thread I'd say there are quite a few European players which don't catch the too many events in their regular playing hours though.
-
GM events will happen when the gms have the opportunity to do them regardless of which day this falls on.
The team is not so large that they can cover all the times you will want them to and some people will always miss events regardless of when they are thrown.
Sometimes an event will be thrown at a time euros can't play, this is simply due to the fact that there are enough team member present to throw an event then. I would NOT want the gm team to forestall ANY event throwing ANYTIME they have enough people to throw it. Americans also miss out some times on events thrown earlier due to the fact they are still at work when an event begins, this is unavoidable.
I have been pushing the gm team to throw more events and offering them what aid I can to help them to do so. This is in answer to the growing note of doom and gloom about rp going on in the forums. Trying to increase the frequency of events means more events will be thrown in a full range of different times.
Also we announce all events that it makes sense to announce so this is a non-issue.
At the risk of offending Mythryndel, if there are not enough events occurring in your time zone APPLY TO THE TEAM.
When someone says "fix it yourself" it makes perfect sense and is an utterly defensible position. Most devs and ALL gms have begun as players and joined the team specifically to "fix it themselves."
No one is owed planeshift and it will not come into realization but through the efforts of its community members.
Having said all this, yes ligh (and others) we WILL throw events on Saturday also.
Happy Gaming!
