Makes it any difference for getting experience if I mine metals which are more valuable? Or does mining iron give the same xp as digging for gold?

To my knowledge its the same no matter what you you dig

heh... here is the kicker (sorry.. could not resist)
if you want to know what gives you more exp, look at your exp as you mine and note the change.....
As for experience in skill (practice) that is easier to tell at lower levels... because bars move more per event.. but still a guess.... and I do not want to take the fun of guessing from you... but believe me.. I would be guessing too ;D
as far as what gives you more "XP" be it mining, working with stock, etc. best thing to do is watch your progress and decide for yourself. note it may (or may not) change as your stats and skill levels change!
I hope that helps as a procedure... I do not think that could be called a spoiler... he he heh

The primary benefit would be that you are going to find a LOT more Tin than you are Gold. So if you are looking for XP, go for the common metals.
[EDIT] Tin, Iron, etc... sorry if i confused anyone... I've gotten asked a lot in-game lately about tin. Point is, if you are training a skill, mine something common if you are wanting to gain XP. I you are looking for trias, go for the exotic metals.
