There have been areas that has been all black before but now it has taken a new direction. Most places I go, the terrain looks ok in the distance but as I get closer it gets darker. The ground under my feet is now usually 100% pitch black. MAkes it kind of hard to navigate dangerous terrain, or mine ore for that matter. Any suggestions? I have run the updater already..
Edit: Just noticed when I'm in the black, stuff I drop on the ground tend to get buried. Not by much though, maybe less than a foot..

system stats?

You mean something like this:http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32858.0

Maybe, I've replaced updaterinfo.xml, ranthe updater again and a lot of stuff *is* happening. Takes a while though, may have to let it run overnight and see how things look tomorrow. :)

The updater found scores of errors but apearantly none that helped me. My surroundings are still black. :(
My system:
P4HT @ 3.2GHz, 2GB RAM, ati radeon 1950x gpu (256MB RAM), latest version of catalyst drivers (or the version before that..)
winxp sp2

I have this same problem - I have to climb a hill and get some distance to see where the road is sometimes.
Windows XP, Radeon 9600, Intel Pentium 4 processor 3.00GHz, 2GB RAM

Heh, good to know I don't suffer alone ;)
I don't know if it is connected but I am usually wading through the black ground., sometimes it is only inches deep, sometimes up to my (dwarven)chest.

I have exactly the same problem (window xp, ati mobility radeon 9600 64MB).
I experienced this graphic issue already before the last update, I think it started with the update 2008.07.28.

For me it started with the 4.01 update. Playing with the gamma value in catalyst control center I regained some visibility. Turned out the ground wasn't totally black after all, just very, very dark. And there are no details, just 'blobs'...not to mention everything else looks crap...

Have been messing around a bit and the results are...confusing...
First I found me a laptop with PS4.00, naturally it didn't connect to anything so I ran the 4.01 installer, after which PS totally failed to start. So I uninstalled everything, deleted what was left of the PS directory and ran the 4.01 installer, then the updater and suddenly I had textured terrain again :D
Then my 'real* computer. Like my laptop I uninstalled everything and deleted leftover files, then reinstalled fromthe 4.01 installer and ran the updater. Unfortunately, this comp did *not* behave like my laptop. Half a dozen tries yielded the same result: Clean install from 4.01 and the ground got textures. Run the updater(with many errors) and the ground gets black again... :(

Thats your aura, man.
-
Yep, same here, with PS fully updated.
Stats:
WinXP on Intel 1,7 Ghz, 1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X550/X700 Series with Catalyst 8.7 (newest)
another ATI-specific problem?
-
I got catalyst drivers v8.6 now, 8.3 had the same problem and you have 8.7. That's 3 different catalyst versions with that error.
My laptop also got an ATI-graphics card btw (mobility radeon 9600) but without the black ground. The drivers are a bit old though, 8.14XXX (?)

I have compared my two installs thoroughly (ran md5deep on them ;) ) and only place I found a difference was in the planeshift.cfg file...
On the bottom of the 'black install' I found this line:
PlaneShift.Visuals.ShadowRange = 312
Any idea what it means? Changing it didn't do help much as it only got set back again... My initial thought on this was that my characters shadow now was 312m wide...explaining the black area around me :p
