Title: [Event] The Night Rogue Strikes!
Post by: Xillix Queen of Fools on August 10, 2008, 10:51:18 pm
A notice is placed outside Kada El's tavern by Jefecra:

It is rumored that a rogue is robbing people at knife point. This rogue seems to have some magic ability or at least items that allow him to slip away unseen. If you have had an experience with the Night Rogue of Hydlaa please recount it here so other citizens may beware until we have apprehended this criminal.

[A number of blank pages are tacked below with a quill and inkwell tied below the notice.]

I am another victim of the Rogue. Here's what i can tell:
I stopped at the plaza to see what was going on there. The guards were talking to a guy who was attacked there, that's what i overheard. They weren't optimistic to catch the offender soon, so they left to warn Allelia and the people in the tavern. Most of the people had already walked away, but there was still a handful of people left, so i felt safe enough. As a peaceful citizen, i had sheltered my weapons, like always. That's why i couldn't react when he appeared behind me and pointed a knife at my throat, demanding all my money. Well, i realized that i had no other chance and gave him my purse... Then... i'm not exactly sure what happened next, but i fell down and when i looked up, the thief has disappeared...
Some others were standing near me, but it was too dangerous to interfere... at least they told me so. Then i went to the tavern to report to the guards, but they had already left... later i met Lieutenant Harcrit and informed him of the crime, but it was too late to follow the thief...

*Orgonwukh walks by, growling to himself, a hand on his neck, some blood running through his fingers. Then he reads the posts and grabs a blank page, starting to write...*

I was assaulted by a cloaked thug in the arena. He attacked me from behind although I did not see him coming into the pit I was in. He uses daggers and hits harder than an Ulbernaut. It seems that he has supernatural powers and one man is unable to bring him down.

Where are the guards when we need them? In tavern, guarding Alleliia's mugs?

Please report any information concerning this thug to me as well. I really want this guy punished.

Skardellinus sighs, when he reports...
"I was guarding two friends of mine in a hidden and dark location behind the Kada-El area...I had only little luck with already having wielded my pair of short swords while I was watching and guarding the mentioned area...Thus I seemed being too concentrated of getting aware of the dark person, who immediately appeared out of the darkness...He or she had a black cloak and looked like a necromancer, who I have seen on my travels already...Our conversation - at least, what I am remembering - was the following:
I said: "Who are you, sir?"
Qia stands protectively in front of Mrokii
The dark person said: "You sir, are to surrender your tria or die where you stand"
I said: "I won't do anything, sir...just feel challenged"
Then he hit me with one of the hardest strikes, that I have ever experienced. I suppose, at least only Raithen at the Bronze Doors Eagle or a Talad-Ulbernauth-Chimera in their young years might have had such a power... [20k damage, lol]...while exhaling my last breathe, I only had time to say..."Let the ladies alive"
He looted my whole money...But now I am back in Hydlaa again and report this therefor to the local officers. Thank you for your attention, I hope, the ladies have been able to escape...
"

Hrothbert in search of some way to inform others as well as the guards about his experience walked by the message board and noticed the bloodstained note. When he finished reading all the previous posts he grabbed the quill and hurriedly wrote:

I was just passing through Hydlaa back to Oja Veda on an errand, just as I was entering East Hydlaa, I felt the sharp point of a slim knife between the links of my armour. Then a voice, very monotone, which neither sounded male nor female demanded my tria or my blood; I tried to persuade them otherwise, I even took my time to allow witnesses to stop and see what was happening; After they took my tria they pushed me forward, said "thanks for the business", and vanished with some sort of spell.

Anyone who saw this happen please add to this and let the guards know all you can.

I have tried to get Taulim to inform his octarchal charge but said he would not bother them at that hour it was nigh on midnight.

Hrothbert walks off more wary of his surroundings, now more than ever

Upon leaving Kada Els on night I was witness to this foul scums antics, He robbed two poor citizens as a crowd gathered. I now none of those present but around 6 or 7 witnessed the robbery. The Night rogue tried to run but was chased down by the mob and corner. He then vanished before our eyes. Some dark magic is afoot in Hydlaa.

Take care out there citizens.

[From Zandral's (alt) Point of view]

I was sleeping in Kada El's tavern with the door quite unfortunately open by mistake. He [the word written in bold letters] came in to the room at some point, bringing a distinct smell with him, and held a knife to my throat. He woke me up. Around this point someone outside of the tavern also cried out, apparently they were being robbed as well.

The rogue asked me where the money was and I told him it was under the bed. As a matter of course, I wouldn't just challenge an attacker like that since I was so clearly at the disadvantage. He went under the bed and after not finding it made me get it.

I tried to run but he stopped me so I headed back to the bed. I saw the candle on the table  behind the bed and started to form a plan... I Made a smart comment about using a candle to see under the bed and then grabbed the bag.

I waited for him to approach me for the bag and when he got close enough, I attempted to push the candle in his face and distract him... It didn't work. He gave me one last chance to to hand over the bag and I gave it to him. He snatched it very fast, spilled about half the contents, and rushed out. He seemed to be under the impression that the guards were right on his heels....

I can attest to the contrary....

Thidin walks up to the post and smiles and she goes to the next blank spot and writes;

I saw him run out towards the east gate. As I followed he stopped by a camp by the river close to Oja. I think he goes there after every night.

After a robbery I saw him hide into the shadows but then appear by the east gate everytime.

Thidin giggles slightly and walks back into the tavern

Myself, and many citizens, have witnessed many of the Night Rogues attacks last night and the night before. He kills and robs at will.
I have so far discovered that he is indeed powerful and can appear and vanish at will.
It is said that he smells of smoke and it is suspected that he reside at the camp on the Oja road during the day.
He seems only to attack at night and within the Hydlaa City Walls.
Last night he announced outside Harnquists that we should speak with our guards to negotiate the release of his brothers. He vowed to keep killing every night until his demands are met.

Be careful at night citizens, the safest place is your homes.

A report by Merina

I was working at Harnquist's forge, the one closest to his house, when suddenly a rogue appeared behind me and put a knife to my throat demanding my money or my life. As there were other citizens around that helped to distract him I had the opportunity to headbutt him twice in the face and give him a bloody lip. I tried to draw my sword to stab him in the foot but he then cut my throat.I did get a brief glimpse of him though. I will try to have an artist draw a sketch.

Talalas walks up to the plaza fountain, a slight smile almost hidden beneath his beard.  Hopping up on the numbered, stone block facing Harnquist's shop, he clears his throat.

"Citizens, one rogue has made us all on edge, one rogue!!  How can this be?!  We must stand together, we must work together, we must fight for our freedom and our city together.  We need answers and until we know the right questions to ask, we need to have armed patrols around the plaza at night to help protect the innocent.  He has taken by dagger point what wasn't his from a fellow Hammer, he crossed the line.  He has taken innocent lives with no regard, his line for negotiations has been erased.

We have been given the okay from the guards to protect ourselves, with magic or steel.  I believe we should have multiple groups of four or more well trained warriors patrolling from the East gate to the North gate at night.  The Night Rogue has murdered many citizens in all parts of Hydlaa, sometimes right in front of witnesses.  Yahh of the Bloodstone Brethern was able to wound the Night Rogue, just before falling to the rogue's deadly blow, so the Night Rogue can be hurt, he is mortal.  Together we can take him down and send a message to any other that feels they can do what they wish in the city.  The citizens of Hydlaa should not stand by and should never adhere to his demands.  If he wants to be with his brothers, then maybe he should join them in jail or learn how to read because he'll be spending a lot of time in the library in the Death Realm."

Talalas takes a draw from his beer mug.  Wiping the froth from his beard, he watches to see if anyone is paying attention.  Holding his head high, he continues.

"With the ability to hide and even vanish out of thin air, he must be using the many shadows at night to get around undetected.  We need answers, we need to find how he can hide so effectively, and how we can hinder his ability.  I think we need to find a way to light the city better at night.  Maybe Raithen or Levrus will know of a way to shine light into the shadows so we can track or deter this Night Rogue.  Not everyone needs to wield weapons and use glyphs either, we can use everyone's help to set up traps.  Anything that can slow the Rogue down, distract his concentration, brighten his dark clothing, louden his steps, ruin his escaping ability.  This should be done and ready to go before it gets dark.  Come together people of Yliakum or we will continue to fall individually.  You'll find me in the plaza at night and searching for him at the encampments during the early morning.  He is one, we are many.  Bring this Night Rogue to justice or he will suffer his fate at the end of our swords, the force of our axes and the power of our magic."

Talalas hops down from the stone block, looks for any volunteers and begins to get to work.

Cilay takes the quil and starts to write his experiance with this dark rogue

I was standing serving customers at my shop located at the north gates, it was a fine day but the even grew on, just as the night was setting in and the crystal light dimming, I felt the cold sharp edge of steel against my throat!

The Dark rogue, he appeared from out of no where, holding a dagger to my throat, he hissed at the frightened customers and threatend to spill my blood if i didn't give him my stock and tria.
Fearing my life and the dakrus curse, i handing over a few weapons and all my tria...

With an evil thank you and a cloud of dark mist he vanished into the night...

Zetsumei grabs the quill and begins to write about his run-in

I was sleeping behind the Iron Temple, when I was rudely awakened just before sunrise by the smell of campfire, and a knife to my neck.  The Night Thief asked, in a sarcastically polite manner, for my tria purse, which I eventually gave to him.  I should interject here and mention that I merely assume the rogue was male; to be perfectly honest, not only could I not determine it's gender, but even it's height and build were somehow being masked; about the only thing I could discern were its lips, which were bloodied, though I can't say whether that was from a fight, or from...something else.  Anyway, He seemed concerned about completing our exchange before the sun had fully risen, and perhaps with good reason; I could've sworn it's eyes began to smolder and burn as the light hit them.   It's clothes were singed as well, though I can't tell whether that was related to the  scent of campfire, or the incident with his eyes.  After that particular event, he pressed his knife a bit harder against my neck, which prompted me to give him my purse.  He was in for a bit of a shock though.

I'd heard the reports of him, or his kind, I don't know how many there are, and had prepared for such an event by storing all of my valuables at the bank.  So when I tossed him my purse, it was entirely empty, which amused me to no end, and I'm sure aggravated the rogue.  However, I'd sadly forgotten about the fact that Battle Helms are valuable objects, and was...persuaded to hand it over.  The thief thanked me for our little business transaction, and then vanished.

Zetsumei puts the quill down, and begins his hunt for a new Helm, and a way to get back at the rogue.

[OOC]Our thief asked me to read his description, and most of it is worked into the above tale.  He also asked me to take a screenshot of the event, so here it is.

I was taking a late night walk, and as I passed by Jayose's library, suddenly someone's there behind me demanding my coin purse! He stuck a knife to my back, and I couldn't do much else but hand it over. Then just as suddenly, he was gone, as if vanished to thin air. I didn't get a chance to look at him, unfortunately. A man came just as he left, and told me others had died from a robbing just the night before... I think I will try to cut down on my late walks.

I, as I had somewhat hoped, was attacked by this thief. However, he was prepared for me, freezing me just as he appeared behind me. I noticed him only moments before I was frozen, and hadn't even the time to go for my blades before I was unable to move. He asked, quite needlessly, for my trias, and I told him he could have my tria pouch all he wanted. Those who know me will laugh, as all that thief will find in my tria pouch is a bunch of razor blades and all of the trias I own. None. Unfortunately, this freezing spell of his will make things much more difficult for anyone trying to capture him. For all who read, beware.

[[I suggest changing "razor blades" to "shards of glass" or "needles", as there is no such thing as razor 'blades' in Yliakum. In the time PS is set in, razors (the barber kind) were -very- expensive, and typically only possessed by surgeon/barbers and the rich. In giving the thief a bag of barbers' razors, you would have given him/her a small fortune.]]

[[That might depend upon location, really. Razors have been popular and affordable since the late Bronze Age, as the archeological record of Europe shows: The most common of grave gifts in Northern Europe during the late Antique and Early Middle Ages - regardless whether rich or poor - include wooden or bone combs and metal (usually iron) razors. Besides, the typical razor of the time period was actually incredibly easy to manufacture, and a good smith would have been able to produce several in a day. With that being said, I agree with the poster above.  ;)]]

Earlier in the week I heard of him...the "Night Rogue". Real inventive name. Anyway, I end up tagging along with Gwinn, Eid, Talalas and a bunch of others...using Talalas as bait, everyone else watching from hiding spots.
Nothing. Seems the rogue`s got more sense.
Then we hear a rumour he camps out east of Hydlaa...next thing I know I`m watching that place...and the gobble village.
How come I, an innocent gambler, always get tangled up in this do-goodery?
Well, I`d come to regret it.

Only last night I was wandering the dark alleys of Hydlaa - not a great idea, I know, but sometimes you need to - and the next thing I know there`s a smell of burned wood - campfires - and a knife to my neck. Nice manners.
Anyway...without going into details, I tried negotiating...or at least keeping him talking until someone came along.
Seems he (if it even is a "he") doesn`t want his brothers releasing...he wants THE brothers releasing. "Each other`s brothers" or something.
Whoever they are.

Anyway. To my luck, someone happens to look into the alleyway.
That gave me the change to scre-#ahem# alert them and run.
I could hear him chasing but when I got to the plaza I thought I`d gotten away clean...and as the adrenaline subsided I felt it...my life draining out from my back. Must`ve slashed my kidneys as I made a break for it.
I just reach Hanace and some others by Harn`s...screaming my lungs out that he`s here...and Dakkru took me.

[This is from Nemeden my alt's point of view, not Nedoko's point of view.]
I was walking through town to take a quick walk through the mountains on the road to ojavdea. However, I found several people in the plaza talking about the Night Rouge and how he was last seen in east hydlaa. I then continued my walk and when I was back in hydlaa, I decided to relax in the hidden gardens. However, on the way there, I was unable to move and then the Night Rouge came out, at about 4 in the morning. He threatened to kill me if I didn't give money so I gave him a bag of money then called for help. Afterwards, he tried to cast a spell and it didn't work. So he dropped 4 arrow glyphs and tried again. This time, It worked. 2 guards then came and asked me what happed. I explained and asked them if anything was different about the glyph. They answered no but one told me to ask levrus. I then found the people in the same place as last time and they Heard shouts someone found the night rouge. I ran up the hill and some people used a torch for light so he would disappear. I then went up the hill further and out the north gate and continued to the magic shop. When I showed levrus the glyphs, he said nothing was different about them. I then went back into town and by harnquist where people were talking about - you guessed it:the night rouge. I also heard someone chased him through the caves under the laanx temple  but he didn't leave and vanished at the exit. Somone also was arrested but I was tired and didn't understand why.

The Night Rogue robs The House of Games.

Eurac was brutally robbed in the back streets around Kada els two nights ago. He was found by the angry mob after the Rogue collapsed on the cold ground. His pouch gone and his spirit broken.
There is nothing left, The vaults of The House of Games are empty, the Prize fund for The Hydlaa Draw gone. This Night Rogue stole from every citizen that evening.
Eurac was later found drunk and begging in the plaza, a sad sight to see.
The guard suggested applying for compensation from the Octarch by speaking to Jefecra. Maybe we, all that have been robbed, should petition Jefecra. THIS NIGHT ROGUE MUST BE CAUGHT, DEMAND THE GUARDS DO SOMETHING SOON.

Removes her quill from her Pack, and scribes her account of her assault to be added to the many others on the wall.
It was late. I had lost my Groffel Bacci and set out to find her. She had a habit of heading to the east of town. Bacci Likes to play with the Kirkri who run loose there. So I began my search there.
Suddenly the wind grew cold and stale. Before I knew it, he was behind me. I felt his cold blade against my throat, his Hot rancid breath at my ear…. “shhhhh he said” and demanded My tria,  His voice was cool and heartless as he threatened to do unspeakable things if I did not turn over my coin.. I am ashamed to say, I did beg for my life. Thoughts of My kits ran through my head, thoughts of them without a mother. I handed him my tria Pleading he do me no harm. The knife eased from my throat as he tried to cast a spell. His staff identical to those carried by the guard was held clumsily in his hands. He did not manage to cast his spell and grew angry at the staff “It is not working” he bellowed as he tapped it heavily upon the ground. He released his grip upon me. This was my chance and I took it. I ran as fast as I could. I  looked back to see if I was being followed only to see him Vanish with a frustrated and perplexed look upon his face.

And so this is my account true and factual, to be noted by the law of the land.

So there I was wandering the city in the early morning hours when I saw a group of agitated people in the plaza. Seeing as how I have been somewhat bored of late and mindful of the illusive almost illusory menace preying on the citizenry I wander over to see if this was some lynch mob being formed. All of a sudden the fiend seemed to drop from the sky and confronted the two guardsmen! Perhaps I arrived late to the scene and missed some of the prelude but the rogue and a guard traded spells before the villain vanished and no capture was made.

As the prisoner is escorted to jail by the guards, Viloran addresses the crowd:

-The thief has been apprehended thanks to the aid of brave citizens -He says loudly- You can put your weapons away now. The situation is under control.

Then, as they get closer, he continues with the explanation:

- Most of you did not know it, but all this time we had been setting a trap for the thief. A trap in which he fell helplessly. Citizens Arnin, Illysia, Eurac, Karoff, Leumasocyw, Scisel, Aiwendil, Tadill, Quarry, Grikl, and Gwinn were of vital help. They posed as decoys to be robbed by the thief and delivered an number of trias enchanted with an antimagic spell. This spell corrupted the staff the thief had stolen and brought him down to his demise.

Monala interrupts him with a question that was not in her mind alone:

-  Sir Viloran, I've a question: Why'd it take the guards so long to come take care a' this?

- We needed careful planning to nullify the weapon he had taken, citizen. Despite the criticism, if I may add. The victims were instructed to deliver the trias we had prepared for him. The magic in these staffs is very powerful. That is why no regular weapons could stand a chance against them. With the enchanted trias, we made sure the staff's magic was drained. That is why we recruited so many citizens. We determined that the thief would not hurt them if they cooperated, so we provided him with the perfect targets.

- How were the citizens recruited -someone says.

- Citizens who expressed their interest in helping the guards instead of running around playing vigilante with their swords drawn were selected for this mission.

- And what of the other rogues? -another voice asks.

- The rogues were probably sellswords. If any of you could identify them we will hunt them down. If you know anything about them, please report these thugs to the guards. The prisoners will be held in custody until their trial.

Viloran takes a few seconds to assess the situation quickly then speaks again:

- Very well, I think we've all had enough excitement for now. If you'll excuse us, we have some criminals to question now. You can all return to your homes now. And remember: Obey the law.  Guards, back to the barracks.

With this last order, the guards head back to their headquarters in the Library district, leaving the citizens behind to tell the story on their own. The crystal slowly starts to light up as the morning makes its way into the realm. With dawn, the Night Thief is finally a threat no more.

The guards had to disguise their actions, even from those they were protecting. They knew knew the Night Rogue had spies, but had to keep that knowledge a secret until they could spring their trap. Unfortunately, some citizens took this the wrong way, and had to be 'removed' from danger the hard way.

All prisoners were released after a short time. I hope they have learn their lessons, as in normal times, being hostile towards a guard is a criminal act, and attacking a guard is a high crime.

I sat by the tree near ol’ Harnies’ listening to the crowd discuss with the Guard, the situation of the attacks and what was and was not being done to ease the situation.  The endless insistence, of the crowd to use force was grating at my good sense. Normally I agree that one should defend themselves and loved ones. Though, in this case combat was proven futile. The guards also were taking action, more so that they had ever done in the past. The guards were obviously struggling under the weight of their current investigation and the crowds they meant to protect. I spoke out at times, pointing out the futility of swords against this particular adversary, to no avail. So today I was merely observing.

That is, until a guard leaned in and whispered. He said, the guard would like my help, was I willing. Of course I was. The situation was Chaotic and I had already been struggling with how to bring about balance. This opportunity was indeed most welcome. The guard need me to get myself arrested and for it to look convincing.

With a nod I began to berate the guard as if I had been given a great insult. My insults grew loud and hostile. I must admit I did enjoy the ruse. Then I commanded my groffel, Bacci to attack the guard. The first bite from Bacci wasn’t enough so again I commanded her attack. As the Guard cast the incarceration spell I could see Bacci had a good hold upon the guards pant leg. I had successfully gotten myself arrested.

I emerged in a cell. Much nicer than the one I found myself in a few days prior. In front of my cell two guards greeted me. They released me from the cell and asked me to sit. I was first asked to give my oath that I would speak not a word to anyone of the conversation that was to transpire. I agreed to keep my silence giving my word as a Magi.

Now that the situation has been resolved I have been given liberty to speak.

The plan was laid out before me. I knew I was to be bait. Indeed I was correct. The staff, I was told, was one of the very ones used by the guards. It was stolen, although I was not made privy to the details surrounding it’s theft. The guard proceeded to explain, that they had in secret enlisted the aid of other citizens. Each enlistee was given enchanted Tria . The goal was to weaken the ill-gotten staff wielded by the rouge. It was the task of those who had been given this tria to allow themselves to be attacked and most importantly robbed. The coins had to be passed to the rouge for the plan to work, and he was not to be aware that they where anything other than common Tria. For this I had to be a convincing victim. My pride would have to be laid aside in the interest of my goal. Though the thought did not sit well, it was a small sacrifice to accomplish balance and end the reign of this rouge for good.

I set out to the east end of the city. I knew of many dark alleys where a thief would feel his courage. I called for Bacci as if she were lost to give a reason I would be wondering such dark places. I was not long in my wondering when I felt the cold dagger at my throat. I gave up my coin purse containing the rouges fate as I pleaded for my life.  I had to continue the ruse to the end. For spies and cohorts could be anyone. I acted the victim running through the streets calling for help. Untill at last the guard would take my statement.

I for one, am honored to have been of assistance. I know well sometimes the best solutions hide in secret veiled to those well meaning saboteurs who care too much and react too quickly.  The Guards , much to my delight, redeemed themselves by employing calm diligence and tact.

HAIL !!!!  to the good Guards of Hydlaa. Let not your victory this day stand alone.

[I have to say large scale events like this are incredibly time consuming and not realistic for the short term bubba. My hope is that events of this nature will encourage more people to join the teams (gms, settings, engine, art, testers, all participated in this one) so that we can in fact do this more often. Certain changes have been made to make it the case that all devs willing to receive gm training get it, while this helps gms a lot it does take us away from developing. We will always need more quality people, if you don't know how to help, ask.]

The Night Rogue of Hydlaa looks from out the cell pondering "How shall I free myself now . . ."

Dajoji credited himself last, god I hate false humility, he was in fact the organizational force that kept this together]

[sorry, couldn't post earlier...]

Of course I heard of that dark rogue before. But I didn't saw anything of him, or knew anyone who was robbed. I just was annoyed by all this fuss that made around him. I just wanted to enjoy myself a bit in Kada Els and didn't need any horror stories about "appearing out of the void" invulnerable rogues. But it seems none understand this. That rogue was the topic of every conversation I heard. So when a few guards came in, they were perfect targets to vent my anger. I started to to insult them a little bit and called them incapable of catching that rogue. And maybe I got a little bit rough on them too....Just a tiny little bit.
At last my reward for this was a night in prison.
I guess this could be where the story ended, but that wasn't the case. After taking all my possessions and keeping me in suspension for some time a guard finally approached the Kran in the cell next to mine. They asked the Kran if he would prefer to spend a night in prison or regain his freedom and reputation by helping them to catch that dark rogue. Quarry, as the Kran was called how I found out later, hesitated for a moment and then agreed to help them. Next the guard came to my cell and asked me the same question. After some chatting with him, I finally agreed too and the guards released Quarry and me. They asked us to have a seat and started to explain their plan to us. It seems that rogue got somehow hold of one of the guards staffs, which provided him with all those awesome powers I heard about. They came up with a plan to break these powers. All we had to do, was to make sure the rogue robs us and receive some special prepared coins they give us. We were also told that this shouldn't be too dangerous as long as we cooperate with the thief. It seems only victims that tried to fight the rogue or didn't follow his orders got harmed or killed by him. For me this was a welcomed opportunity to help to get rid of that rogue and continue with business as usual in hydlaa. So I agreed to help them with that and Quarry did so too. After giving us the prepared tria and our other stuff again the guards reminded us again to cooperate with the rogue and wished us luck. They finally guided us out of the guard barracks. So my night in prison wasn't that long...

(http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/5400/shot03pt6.th.jpg) (http://img47.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shot03pt6.jpg)(http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/4968/shot04md0.th.jpg) (http://img129.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shot04md0.jpg)(http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/1146/shot05hm2.th.jpg) (http://img129.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shot05hm2.jpg)

The next night I walked alone through the narrow alleys of hydlaa. This wasn't that bad for me, because it gave me the chance to escape all this gossip and stories of the rogue. So I spend a few hours walking through hydlaa. I just entered a dark alley behind the library in east hydlaa, already starting to think that nothing would happen that night, when I felt the touch of a knife at my neck. I really was sure that I'm prepeared for this situation, but I was wrong. I forgot everything the guards told me about nobody got hurt when when he cooperates with the thief. From rumours I knew the rogue uses some kind of spell that makes it impossilbe for the victims to move. He didn't use such a spell on me...and it wasn't necessary. I stood there, frightend to death, unable to move and started to shiver. He asked me to give him my tria. That was when I noted the smell of blood. When he bend forward to tell me to do it fast, some of his blood was greased to my hair. I relaxed a little bit, grabbed my purse and handed it to the rogue without saying a word. I had only a few tria with me, just for the case that I get a irresistible urge for a beer. And of course the prepared tria of the guards were in my purse as well. To my surprise the rogue seems to have some good manners. Despite his bad condition he thanked me and started to cast a spell. He robed me, but at least he did it with some style. The first spell he tried to cast failed, but after some cursing on the guards staff he manged to disappear with a second spell. I just can guess that I wasn't the first person who gave him some of these special tria. Anyhow, after he disappear I run to the front of the library and shouted for some guards. But it seems no guard was near. A friendly Ynnwn noted me, and agreed to escort me to the plaza to find some guards. When we reached the plaza there was already a crowd. That rogue must have be busy, it looked like he tried to rob another one shortly after me at the plaza. But I couldn't find any guards here too. So I decided to go to Kada Els and see if I can find one there. There I finanally was able to tell a guard that the rogue got the prepared tria from me. For me that was enough trouble for that night and I went home to get some well earned sleep. Despite my tiredness that wasn't that easy at first, but somewhen I drifted into a dark, dreamless sleep...

As news travels around Hydlaa, the citizens become restless and start to gather in groups.

The rogue Vileneck climbs atop of Laanx's statue and starts to shoot magic arrows. But the Hydlaa Guard and a few bold citizens have him surrounded.

The members of COACT demand an Octarchal inquiry  into the events that led up to the theft of the staff and subsequent reign of terror. We need to know how the theft was accomplished, whose staff it was that was stolen and whether it was their negligence that allowed it to be stolen, what their punishment will be and what steps will be taken to prevent anyone else from illegally acquiring such a  powerful item. Furthermore we demand that a review of guard rules and procedures be done to determine if significant changes are needed to protect the citizenry from faulty recruitment practises and insufficient control of the powerful weaponry issued to the constabulary.

An official announcement makes it across the city in a matter of days. Guildhalls, taverns, streets, and homes are each targeted with posters, flyers, letters, and the gossip generated the news:

The Public Trial of The Jelkaf Brothers

followed by

The Public Trial of Vileneck Ord - The Night Thief

By order of Vigesimi Amidison Stronghand and with the support of his Lordship, Octarch of the Dome, Iragdun Salikarios,
citizens will be allowed into the Courthouse for both proceedings. They are reminded, however, that by no means, can they
enter the premises baring weapons and that casting any aggressive spells in the area before, during and after the trials will be
punished by immediate incarceration and a fine of 2000 trias per offense. Citizens are also reminded that attendees are to
respect the protocols of the court and shall remain quiet until the court is adjourned.

The trials will be held in Hydlaa's Courthouse, located in the Octarchal Complex of the Library District guarded by Taulim Wilaal.

Vileneck's trial was a strange event. Several people were - at least - surprised that at first any speaking was prohibited, and - in contrast to the Jelkaf brothers, who were sentenced to death by the Crystal's radiation - only got a rather mild punishment of being banned from Hydlaa and Eagle doors, due to an advanced illness, close to death.

Her highness, Queen Lolitra Hollinthy Purrty of Printh, was fortunately wise enough to protest only by standing up and finally leaving; less fortunate were lady Arinin, the elderly dwarf who posed as bait for the Night Rogue earlier, as well as the Peloosey sisters, who tried to reveal a possible location of a last missing magic staff ... so the court shall not be surprised that rumours are now spreading, they would not even be interested in the truth, and prosecuting the real employer of the theft and the resulting crimes.

Even I got imprisoned. For answering a question from my neighbor. The guards really went haywire banishing anyone they caught talking. They didn't even pay attention to the reason, or the content in the case of the Peloosey sisters. Is the court under a spell, or just blinded by paragraphs?
Title: Re: [Event] The Night Rogue Strikes!

[Reread the crimes. The Jelkef brothers committed many crimes that merit True Death. Vileneck did not commit one. No killing he did ended in True Death. He did not use poisons or magics that would end a person's life in truth Death. He did not plot to overthrow the government. His crimes were thief, assault and killing (not the same as murder, as the people came back), etc. His max sentence would have been life in prison (two weeks for him). Without the staff, he is as weak as an old man, and could not wrestle a child and win. His body was destroyed by the warped power of the staff and the fight with the guards. Banishing him was a far worse punishment than imprisoning him, as his life might have been extended with care in the prison. They basically cast him to the wolves. It was the audience that was not listening. As for the reason for the arrests, that was not the time or place to bring up points or new evidence, as mentioned in another thread. The public was there to witness the sentence, not be jury. The sisters were interviewed later, one was banished for a week for her involvement with the Night Rogue's plot, and further knowledge was added to the investigations still going on to find the possible mastermind behind the plots. As with keeping the plan to capture the rogue secret, perhaps it would have been very bad for the sisters to say where the last staff might be in pubic, so as to tip any spies off to an ongoing investigation. The guards are not inept, they are just drawn that way. ;)

My advice is to have your characters look at the events a little closer, rather than getting outraged at what is seen on the surface.]

[edit to below: Understood. The above comment was also not about the player getting outraged, but the character, just to clearify. (and to give folks a little hint on what is really going on). Carry on.]

[just on an ooc note - why was it advertised as the trial and not the sentencing? if it were not the actual trial? - it may have stopped a lot of ic reactions at the "trial"

I still say it was a great event though - and look forward to many more like it! I for one though - will be a little more guarded on my /me actions - and will probably say once [/tell me if you wish to participate in /me reactions in this so as not to disturb those who otherwise don't wish to see your /me 's]]

[I believe it was an extraordinary event, and kind of OOC. It was to demonstrate what Yliaki justice was like, I would be surprised to see many more trials. As far as the /me's, go, I think it was the nature of this event that caused me to find them objectionable, Generally speaking it is fine. It just seemed a little bit lacking in the proper decorum for a courtroom. I would not worry about it overmuch. That is just me,others looked more favorably upon it.

I certainly do not expect to see players on the docket. ]

[We went with an inquisitorial system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_(law)#Trial) instead of the modern (and more common) adversarial system.

Also, note that reactions from the players are expected, maybe not to every single thing but players are meant to be part of the event as well. In the case of a trial, unless they are witnesses or defendants, they can't really do more than watch and react silently but those entries add interest to the event.

As guard duties evolve, it is expected that more criminals will be processed in the future as we connect other events with The Hand of Law. We might not be able to have trials every week but it's only logical that they should take place every so often. Also note that current content (as IC laws) and game mechanics will evolve as we get a deeper insight on this so suggestions are always welcome.]

Eurac wonders why everybody seems to think that this is over?
