Title: Tourny Day!
Post by: Joemama246 on September 01, 2008, 06:17:36 pm
Ok, I think it would be cool if every month maybe there was a tournament day in the arena, maybe it would cost so much tria to spectate, then some tria to enter, say you pay your tria to an NPC and he puts your name in a bracket, also, I think there should be a diferent skill level in all the different fighting places. i for one would enjoy to just sit in the stands and watch as two guys or gals beat the tar out of each other, I know some people try to do these, but I mean something the GM's organize, i think everyone would enjoy to see this, not to mention earn the 1st, 2nd, 3rd place awards.  ::)

Why does it have to be GM organized?  A well organized player made event would be enough for this, the only reason to make gms do it would be because the players are too lazy.  If you wanted to start such an event i don't think you'd have much trouble finding participants, you might need a fairly active guild or group of friends to help with the event though.

Which I do not have, also, GM's have the authority, and special powers to make it happen better and more orgaized.

Should be player organized. In my experience it's always better when players are behind things, not DMs/GMs. It's less forced, and the people organizing it profit and have a good reason to try hard  and be creative.

WEll, maybe an NPC you pay a whole lot of tria to, then everyone comes to give him thier money, the NPC gives you a bracket, then you just give the NPC some rewards or something, and spread the word yourself?

I believe there have been a fair few successful tournements organised by players, so it's not like we particularly need an NPC with such an option. In my opinion mechanising the creation of a tournament would kill a lot of RP opportunities, as organising a tournement provides a lot of RP just by itself.

The House of Games could host something like this, couldn't they?

I see two problems with players organizing an event, as posted by the original author.

1. Players can't verify stat/skill levels to force players into skill "brackets".

2. Are players going to trust another player enough to hand over trias for the tournament or to receive their reward if they win?

These two things make it unlikely for this to work as a player-only event.

In general though, I like the idea.

1) Well this is an IC problem too isn't it?  Using GM powers to figure this out would be OOC.  Use qualifying rounds.

2) Same deal.  Why should player characters trust a GM character?

Players can verify skills ic easily enough.  So they could be put into brackets fairly easily :) You've just got to know the right spell ;)

Not sure in 4.02...but there is/was a possibility for (some) players to verify skill/stat levels. But then you still have to trust the player who does the verifying. ;) And I'm not sure if I would call this a IC method because it handles with the skill/stat numbers not with "... has better/worse knowledge in that skill then you".

EDIT: seems I was too slow...

IRL... you generally have a trusted third party that will collect the entry fee, pay the rewards, and make sure everyone is playing by the same rules. There are numerous examples of this, UFC, EliteXC, the Boxing Commission, etc. This isn't an easy problem to solve IC in PS. I don't know you from Adam, Eve, or anyone else. I also have no way of getting anything resolved if someone misrepresents themselves, or has q300 weapons and maxed out skill for their weapon, when I only have half their skill and npc grade weapons. The way PS is set up, that would be a slaughter, even if we both had the exact same stats.

If a GM is identified as the ringmaster (for lack of a better way of putting it), then my character will automatically assume that the event has some credibility. The GM could be running things on behalf of the Octarch or something. However, a player running the event, could claim that status, but couldn't back it up. Also, being IC, I would not give them the time of day.

In order for the original purpose to be accomplished, I think this would need to be a GM event. That is my opinion, take it or leave it.

In response to the idea of not trusting players that run events, that kind of makes sense IC as well, doesn't it? So only either well known players or players from well known tournament organising guilds would be taken seriously. In other words, your character has to win other characters trust to run such a tournament - and more RP fun is generated.

Proglin the entertainer, without any GM intervention, used to host some fantastic tournaments.

Kind of what you're describing Joemama246 and more! So, this is a very doable player event but it requires time, team effort, very good coordination.

Take a look at the web page below for some inspiration. It describes the roles very well.

I remember the Call of Destiny had dueling tournaments in their Summer Festival, which was pretty well organised.

We just finished a grand tournament in the arena. We're working to hold more events, but it does take a lot of planning, even for GMs and Devs to pull off events well

 :sorcerer:

P.S. Keep checking, both in-game and on the forums for news of more tournaments
