Title: If you're "bored" waiting for the server to come up....
Post by: neko kyouran on September 06, 2008, 09:47:50 pm
Design my new computer so I can stop using this 6 year old clunker I currently use.

Your spending limit is $1500 USD.  Parts must come from www.newegg.com or other reputable sites.

Things you may exclude from your parts list:
1) monitor
2) hard drives
3) sound card
4) keyboard
5) mouse
6) speakers

Bonus points for making a system that has 2 vid cards using SLI/Crossfire technology!

Winner gets a gold star and a cookie baked fresh from Rizzin's oven!  Get a building.  :)

But that's an easy one to figure out. They can even use google image search. /shrug

Anyways, here's where I'm at after a day of browsing.  Why would I work while at work after all?:

Gonna double the vid card and RAM modules because I can.   Thinking that's good for a starting ground.  Now to tweak things.

Come on peoples!  You can do better than I can.  Don't you want one of Rizin's cookies?  They're greeeeeaaaaaatttttttttttt! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reIGOLb6tk0&feature=related)

Wow, looks like you have your own way to cope with boredom ;)

I never quite understood this desire to put 2 graphics board, one of those is already a monster in itself. But since that's where you are heading, have you considered a 4870x2 instead of two GTX 260? From what I've heard there are still issues with the latter, besides it'll be more expensive and there is less memory.

On the other hand it's nVidia, so if you need CUDA and so on... personally I've always preferred this brand, must come from how bad ATI was with drivers at the beginning, they are doing much better now.

from my expirence there is just less work to keeping a mac updated then any other os i have seen, apple takes care of all the updates and issues them as needed no need to go searching around the whole internet to find one update to the os or drivers

I recommend the $400 Dell Laptop.  Great way to not waste your money.

*gives his "old" top-end computer a kick as it sits in the closet gathering dust*

I've been tempted by a laptop so many times. Then you know what? I'd be glued to this all day long, carrying it everywhere... NO! It's really a bad idea! I just wouldn't unplug anymore  ;)

A MacOS computer is tempting too, there are just a few issues I'm not too sure about, like how obscure and secretive Apple is sometimes. And, I wonder, is Objective-C still the language to use in GUI design? I find it so barbaric :-\

Neko has anyone put a feature request in for a /facepalm command? :D While we're at it what about /throwsuphands /screams /hugs /scratchesear /makesfaceat ... now those i would like to see ;)

Oh yes and on the subject of a better system do some careful research and you can build a great system for little money that can be easilly upgraded for a long while. My last upgrade about a year ago cost around $220 the 2GB of memory being half of that with motherboard dualcore processor and graphics card the other half. Its an SLI board so i can put another graphics card in when needed and im only using half the memory slots. The OCZ memory is the best investment of all as i get solid fast performance from it, no more el-cheapo stuff for me as theres too much grief from it.
My verdict: extremely happy with it so dont shovel money at a rig as its unnecessary and if you cant choose parts yourself get a techie friend to help :)

Honestly?  Vista is okay.  I had to turn down all the "candy" on it for my laptop though (a brand new one by the way with a dual processor and updated graphics card) and had to buy 2 more gigs of ram for it to run smoothly.  Most people who don't like Vista really just don't like Microsoft at all.  I have both in our house.  I have to use Microsoft because of some compatibility issues with some programs we use for "work".  I also do have a personal issue with Vista wanting to update it'self all the time, but I get over it quickly (like I do most things).  My wife prefers Windows, but only because she's never known anything else.

I prefer using Linux at home only because I don't like spending oodles of money on Microsoft products.  Linux itself is just a download as are the majority of programs it runs.  Anything else I can load in wine unless it's graphics intensive.

Mac is a good platform for graphics and other things, but most people who use it today, do so because they were either raised on it, given one by a friend, or just really like it.

It's all just personal preference and not much else.

Chilling on the porch on a nice day sure as hell beats being holed up in a house.  And costs less because expensive laptops aren't really "laptops".  That's all I'm sayin'. ;)

Those Mac computers with the computer built into the monitors are pretty damn cool, the girl I'm dating has one.  Had never seen one before.

Yes, I am computer-stupid.

The fans are whisper quiet.

They don't have to run as fast to put out the same amount of air flow as smaller fans, hence they make less noise.
