hi there.
[new to the forums]
i have been playing the Game/Tech Demos on and of for som time now, and i just saw on the main page the naming roles, so my question is:
is my in game name Gego Xaren [Gee-go Saa-ren]/[Gee-go Sa-ren] allowed?
there is a company named Xaren, but that came to be after i started using the name in 2005 or earlier.

If it's not well-known, you can use it. Just hope that a GM isn't bored.
-
As its not a common tradename I think its allowable unless we have a complaint, if you're worried contact a GM via petition and we can make a little alteration to make it comply.
@Shaman: I find the implication that a GM's interpretation of the rule varies according to how bored one is, a little insulting and without foundation.
-
Is there a way to ask before we use a name to make sure it is proper?
-
Yes... he just did it here!
hehe

/me feels stupid. That is not what I meant Lolitra.

Well I'm pretty sure most of the names ingame right now could be changed if a GM felt like doing it. All you have to do is google it, and if it comes up with anything, smite it. That's what happened to someone just a while ago. She had a name that was shared with some "famous" play that surprisingly wasn't well-known, and it got changed, even though she had no intention of it being named after that. Which brings me to saying, that if a famous play just happened to be named "Robert", the name Robert would be changed ingame if someone had it. That's how flawed this policy is.

Name changes are not done unilaterally. Whenever a name is deemed inappropriate by the team the player is contacted and given the chance to choose a new name as well as the justification for the name change. There are plenty of gray areas and whenever we find ourselves in one, the decision to change or leave a name is made as a team. Feel free to disagree with our ruling but keep in mind that we take name changes very seriously.
No GM would just change someone's name just because. Google is known to provide results for virtually anything so they are not taken lightly and other sources are consulted (online dictionaries, wikipedia, etc.).
And btw, that character you are talking about had the name of not just some obscure play. Google it. The fact that you have never heard of something does not make that thing any less well-known or important. She understood why the name had to be changed and agreed that it was necessary to do so. She was also given plenty of time to choose a new name. It's the players' responsibility to choose a name that complies with the naming policy.
Mathy: If you have any doubts about google results or any other search you may have done, talk to a GM for final clearance (in-game, on IRC or via forum PM or email).

You have been very thorough in your post and I do understand the naming policy now Dajoji. Thank you.

i just found out thet Xaren is just a sub company/buissnis, and there is Xaren.net and Xaren.com so i do not think that it would be that bad,
xaren.net came t be 2000 and xaren.com 1999 and after searching i found that there are many ppl calling them self Xaren
and i was totally unaware of the company when i started using the name...
//Gego/XAREN
PS i will not change it, unless it is in grave violation of the roles.
-
I don't think I would be to worried about it, Gego, as it would mean nothing to pretty much everyone. That's all the naming rules are there for really, to prevent people from using names that have a meaning of some sort, I suppose.
-
We don't use google to check for bad names. If we did that every name would be bad. Sometimes we use it to help judge how significant a name is, but that's only after it's already caught our attention and it's at the questionable stage.

My alt is named Alternative. She's barely online, never moved, and she got renamed. Now I no longer recognize her.
There's a way to be sinful by being honest. :sweatdrop:
-
Even alts and mules need to abide by the naming policy

What happens if you delete your account: Can someone else use your name?

I think you mean delete your character, but the answer is the same, yes if you delete then you give up any rights to that name
-
Hehe, i have a mule alt named "Itemi Holderi," does that violate any policy? is there a policy against stupidity?

Yes it does and I sometimes wish we did have an anti-stupidity policy but then I'd fall foul of that pretty often too :p

IIRC there used to be a "no stupid names" rule as sort of a catch-all. But it looks like it was replaced with "The Game Master (GM) Team reserves the right to change any name that could be considered unsuitable but doesn’t violate any of the aforementioned terms." Which I have to say is better stated :P
