Ok, here's the problem
(http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/9276/petprobua0.jpg)
At first I named my familiar Gridiron, because it looks like an american football
So, just like it says in the help box, I typed "/pet Gridiron, follow"
And even though there was a yulbar right in front of me which I had just summoned with /pet summon, and I moused over it and it was named "Gridiron", I got the message you see at the top of the chat box. "You do not have a pet named 'Gridiron'"
Guessing it might be because the pet needs two names, I renamed it to "Kickme Imafootball"
Then I typed "/pet Kickme Imafootball, follow" and I got the grey message right below the name change message. Annoyed, I tried putting an underscore between the words and it says I do not have a pet named "Kickme_Imafootball"
Trying some other vartiations, the third of which was just typing in the pet's first name, Kickme, yeilded no better results
So, how do I get my pet to do something other then sit there looking like a lump of poo?
-
For your problem with the pet name I know a solution ;) just do a "/pet follow". I guess you only have one pet, so the name is not needed. I couldn't get it to work with [petname,] too, not sure how this should work. But that still doesn't help you to do something useful with your pet. I just tried it in game and my pet didn't even walk a single step. As far as I know there are still a lot of problems with pets. I don't think they are useable right now (But please correct me if I'm wrong with this ;). If you want to do something useful try a "/mypet yaps", but I wasn't able to do anything else yet.
EDIT: And yes, the NPC server is up...No idea why me pet doesn't follow me
-
Honestly, the comma in /pet [petname,] looks a bit weird to me ::|. Have you tried without it? Anyway, I might be wrong... I agree with Aiwendil that /pet follow should do. The pets are still to be developed to their full potental though ;)
And as an answer to Aiwendil's question: Before your pet starts to follow you, you need to have reached a certain level in a special skill. If everything is ok (no bugs), you'll just get practice points when typing /pet follow but your pet won't move. However, there's a bug if you have completed the quest and first summoned your pet when the npcclient has been down. In that case your pet is... broken ???. At least for the time being :-\.

Haha, do you think I still know when I first summoned my pet.... ;D But your hint the the missing experience in empathy may helps, thanks. And I',m sure my pet followed me already one or two times, (But always only once and then I had to dismiss it and summon it again) so I think I have a chance that it isn't broken.
EDIT: Ah, yes and I tried it without the comma too, but then you just get the explanation how to use the /pet command
-
I used to use /pet follow and that never worked either. I have level 5 in empathy
The NPC server used to be down pretty much all the time back when I used to play, so it may have been down when I did the quest and first summoned my familiar
-
As far as I remember from last week, the following commands should work at least:
/pet summon
/pet target playername
/pet follow
/pet stay
/pet dismiss
I never needed to add the name in front of the command. And I have only one pet per char.
I believe the /pet name name command was fixed recently, regarding single names (without "family name").
-
/pet commands listed ingame, with F1 if you have a pc... Look under user commands
I summoned my pet while NPCs were down... before we knew the problem.. back in February I think... and was sure they would fix that... Still does not follow me.
Came up again today ingame...
oh.. and so you don't think it is my stats...
Magic way that affects it = 24
Various skill that affects it = 43
and it still does not follow me. I started an alt.. and tested it there.. it does follow the alt... but I am Bamko.. not the alt... so much..
Asked many times... Can not get any resolution... I understand all they do is follow.. but wow...
So, maybe we should vote on the bug in flyspray... but I would be happy if someone could just make my pet "disappear" and let me put that old ring back on.. and get a pet that works...
So.. double check the rats are fighting... or you to will have a cute pet that looks at y ou... and nothing else.
-
I agree, we need "/pet delete" to be implemented soon plz dev team :)
-
Last I checked, that bug had only one vote on it.. Mine. :'(
-
My experience has been: the npcclient must be running - the /pet follow wont work until your a certain level - it does work but only once per summon and when the pet reaches you it stops unless you run off before it gets to you.
Another nice feature is "/mypet sniffs at the stranger and growls" which will show in main as i.e "Bob sniffs at the stranger and growls"
It would be nice if it kept following whenever you move off somewhere new.
-
Of course the "NPC client" must work. Who else should control the pet? Thumb rule: Monsters impervious = pets deaf.
If your pet persists not to listen, although NPCs are under control, this may indeed be a char specific bug, after all.
__
You can let the pet repeatedly follow you if you let it stay, follow, stay, follow...
Did you ever try "/pet target {Charname}" and "/pet follow", or similar combinations? ... Do experiment! :whistling:

Put a link to that bug here? ;)
-
Deaf pets? Haven't encountered that yet as I can have a chat with my little Dervil. Go to NPC chat and say "Hi", "who are you" or "how are you" to your pet (i.e. target your pet like any other npc you want to talk to) and you should get an answer. Works for me even with 1st level of a certain skill... ;-)
-
@ Luzino:
Not while the NPC client does not work. Something out there has to listen when you talk to your pet, or give commands to it.
Fortunately, recently he must have worked well usually.

just because it does not have a lot of votes or a ton of votes, will change how fast or slow a bug gets fixed. Its priority and severity hold more priority. Also it depends on how many devs are around that have time to work on the issue that has been reported as not all devs have knowledge to work on all bugs. just give it time and it will get fixed.
-
@LigH
Pardon? You can talk to any NPC while the NPC client is down as well. You can get/do quests in that time. I'm not aware that talking to NPCs is affected by their server being up or down. You get standard answers from your pet like from any other NPC so why should that not work?
I at least never experienced not being able to chat with my pet. And I suffered through enough (too many? ;-) ) NPC-server downtimes. To my experience it controlles movement and such likes of NPCs, not their "chatting".
Anyone correct me if that assumption is wrong. It's just my impression after all, not knowledge.
-
quests have nothing to do with the npcclient [talking to npcs]. the npcclient only controls the movement of the npcs not the ability for them to talk.
-
So the talking and questing is handled by the main server, but the movement (or rather, movement directing) by the npcclient?
Well, alright - "/mypet" is a little passing of a string to a message channel, "/tell" to a pet (like "/tellnpc") merely text recognition and (partially randomized) selection of results from a string table. Little requirement of CPU time. And one-shot actions.
A reaction on "/pet" commands is surely a bit more difficult. It requires a more or less constant (at least repeated) calculation of reactions on events, especially target locations (tracking).

yep

ok, this is in regard ONLY to the bug 980 http://www.hydlaa.com/flyspray_upgrade/ (http://www.hydlaa.com/flyspray_upgrade/) and enter "980" in box in upper right hand corner... where it says "show task #". I will also be updating that as well with some info soon.
If you activated your pet for the first time while NPCs were down, then it may very well be broken. This is not in response to typing commands wrong, not having trained in the right skills, or trying to get it to do more than they can do at this time, like attack, for example. If you pet ever has walked towards you even a step, then I do not believe this bug is affecting you.
I asked Weltal about it, and he looked into it. he has asked me to E_mail some high level people about it, but as it was just yestrday, I have not mustered the nerve to do so yet.
rather than try to parse the whole conversation, and risk missing something, I will just link to it. I put it on a back page in my site to have it accessable. http://www.yliakum.com/petissue.doc (http://www.yliakum.com/petissue.doc)
As I said, I will be following up with bugtracker and then e-mailing someone. Please do not use this information to bug anyone, I will bug whomever needs to be bugged. Of course, if you are a Dev and it happens to come up... I was told only 2 people can fix this, maybe a third. And as you may imagine, I expect it is not on their daily "to-do" list. Nor would I want this to bump anything off that list.
If you are not able to fix this, let me contact those who can. Overall this is a fly on the side of a building. Not hurting much and other more important things for them to spend their time on. Not to say I hope they don't fix it. I do. But lets be patient.

It never worked for me, i reached level 50 in that "skill" months ago, nothing changed from that time.
But, the needed quest for me was broken, i needed to buy a ring of familiar, maybe thats the cause for this.

However, any current pets that were broken before are still broken. Bamko, I have been watching this since you first posted the bug as I had the same problem within a day or two of you reporting it.
There is a solution posted for those with broken pets but it looks like more than ordinary privileges and time are required to fix each individual pet. Could a batch job be run to automagically fix all broken pets?
-
"Tested" and "Fixed" does not necessarily mean "implemented in the currently running server"... might take until the next release. Depends on the kind of bug.
-
In theory this bugfix is retroactive, so all the broken pets should start to "work" after the next update :)

yep it is as if the npcclient won't find the data about the new npc (in this case your pet) it will try to reconstruct data and recreate so your pet in his local data.
normally only some safe and high priority patches get backported right now, like crashes, extremely annoying problems like the map not found etc, so you will have to wait for the next release

I guess I'll know when it is implemented then! ;D

Just to confirm, they're working now.
the /follow and /stay commands are still very buggy, like you type /follow and the pet moves to where you are then stops, and then you move away and it doesn;t keep following you, though for some reason if you tell it to /stay it will start following you again, and the /stay command no longer tells the pet to stop following it just makes it follow and the /follow then doesn;t seem to do anything
