Title: PS server down?
Post by: glitch on April 22, 2003, 05:55:09 pm
Hello, I\'m new to your community and am very much looking forward to playing PS.  Problem is I cannot connect to the server. (planeshift.fragnetics.com)
ERROR: \" Server not responding or is not reachable. Please check the website or forum for more info.\"

I have tried to access this website (http://planeshift.fragnetics.com) to the sum of \"Forbidden: You don\'t have permission to access / on this server\".  I have went to http://www.fragnetics.com to be met with no additional info concerning PS or the server.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.   ~glitch

From the Fragnetics site:

\'We have scheduled another server downtime from 1400 hrs - 1800 hrs on 22 April 2003. This would allow us to fully rectify the technical fault. We apologize for the inconvenience caused.\'

I guess this must be the problem, although I don\'t know when 1400-1800 is in my time, it has definately been down longer than 4hrs. I\'m sure it\'ll be back to normal soon :))

Maybe they are updating the server. I hope they add the trade system.

About the no items problem - I heard somewhere that the server needs to be restarted before it\'ll work, tho I\'m not sure when it\'ll happen nor if it will fix the problem, but we can always hope, can\'t we? :P

And about the lag - I has nothing to do with the server, the server\'s connection or your connection. If it\'s choppy, you have two choices. 1) Upgrade your computer, or 2) Wait for a release that actually fixes the memory leak problems, during \"Initializing World\".

Hmmm we were actually upgrading our harddrives that day cos we noticed that our RAID array developed some bad sectors. During the transfer of files between the harddisks we did not change some settings that were needed, hence the \"Forbidden\" message. I fixed this abt 1 day after our server was back online cuz we were alerted by someone else who was facing the same problem.

I\'m quite curious about this \"lag\" thing myself. I get very choppy play but I assume it\'s the Planeshift client and not the server. The PS client is quite a resource hog now but I\'m sure things would get better along the way.

It\'s very difficult for us to pinpoint exactly \"what\" is causing \"lag\" since there are many factors that could be causing it :

1) PS Client is not optimized
2) Our server is just plain slow
3) Our connection out to the world is not incredibly fast
4) Your computer is slow

The list goes on but I think it\'s cos of many factors and it\'ll be difficult to pinpoint the problem to any one factor. I believe that most of your connections are routed through the US before they hit our server here, so it\'s not too surprising if you have a 1/2sec lag either.

From what I understand we were meant to be an Asian server but now we\'re being connected to the world over.

i\'d add \"server isn\'t optimised\" to the reasons

Lag is entirely client-related, Chris.  The server is never breaking 2% CPU utilization these days, and uses <20Kbps of bandwidth even with 30+ users online.  Your server is doing GREAT so don\'t worry. :-)

Well the \"lag\" definatley isn\'t my rig:

xp1800 @1900
512mb DDR pc2700
128mb Radeon 9700
soyo dragon ultra kt333

I can connect and run around, then it lags out, then I can run, then lag\'s out, so on and so forth.  Most of the time that I tried running around it would lag to the point I\'d have to ctrl+alt+del and kill the program, then frustration sets in, then i\'d play BF1942/DC, release the frustration and then try again. Wether it\'s the software or the server, or the pipe to your server, it\'s not an issue of what my specs are.  GL in future releases. Thank\'s for the feedback.

For me the game lag but it had never crash, i get lag (sometimes a lot) but i think it\'s normal for a pre-alpha game :]

My Pc is quite old :
Athlon 850Mhz
GForce2 GTS
384 Mo Sdram and the like

But i have an ADSL connection, so exept for the initialisation of the world which is long i don\'t complain too much (a pre-alpha relase is not mean to be fast, bug-proof or stable).

So it lag but i gratz the Develloping Team :]
