I think it\'s better to just wait for Planeshift since there is no good free MMORPG at present time.
Buy Neverwinter nights if you want a good RPG game that bad (the game costs 30 dollars, but when you\'ve bought it you can play on the net all you want since it\'s hosted by gamespy)

Well I am currently playing a couple of MUDs, if you want roleplaying they are the best way to go, but being text-based many might not like em.

I used to play Runescape (http://www.runescape.com) a lot, but there are 2 reasons why i went looking for other mmorpgs

1. I want something 3D like PS
2. They put so many restrictions on it, it was hard to get anywhere in the game.

muds/text based games are extremely detailed and rich in storyline. ill give them that much credit. but still, i dont like them either. it seems way to complicated. there are sometimes hundreds of \"commands\" you need to memorize to play the game efficiently. the only thing that keeps me out of mud/text based games is the lack of simplicity. in other words, they are to complicated for my feeble mind :P

Muds arn\'t that bad i guess but BUT seeing I like 3D modeling, reading comic books, and watching TV shows I rarely read books which means i can\'t stick at a mud for more than one minute

Wait a minute. Kyp, you play Shadow Worlds?  I remember you, I think.  I was SJ-Landon.  I think You killed me all the time.  I quit a couple months ago, mostly because of the insane amounts of exp you lose from dying.

ok, i know this is horrible, but, i must get u addicted to it too.

http://www.runescape.com

2 years in the making, this game, though being 3d enviorment and 2d characters, is the most addictive game ever.

the economy got ruined, and its sort of difficult to get started, but its honestly better then any other mmorpg i ever played, soooo much better.

the only problem is that they put in this stupid sencor thing, you cant say \"damn\" or \"sucks\" not to mention any profanity, thanks to concerned parents! (grr)

any way, check it out, and play for a week, dont just quit cause graphics suck, trust me, it will be worth it!

and the best fansite for it is

check em out guys :) :D

rune scape used to be awesome but then it got overflowed by n00bs and buisy servers and the economy got ruined, its not free anymore but if your willing to pay something like 5$ a month its fun,and the management team is very dedicated.

The thread was about free MMORPGs. There is a lot of great pay-MMORPGs out there, so this is nothing special....It looks more like a Diablo-clone to me.

I just looked at Mu Online, and I must say that game looks like it kicks butt!  Sadly I dont speak any Korean.  Anyone know of any completely, and always free MMORPG\'s like Dragan Raja or Mu Online that has english servers, and with all the text in english?

Nah. If they would be dedicated, and they would actually use their tiny brains, they would work on that new engine they promised approx. 2 years ago. But no, instead they add in stupid and useless quests and new weapon types that make no use at all. IF they would actually listen to the community, they would do something about the boring gameplay, but no. rune-scape always were boring, it is boring now, and will always be boring.[/i] That is a fact.

http://enweb.ragnarok.co.kr

...free at the moment(open beta)

however open beta = extremely overloaded servers...

we have 2 realms(Chaos and Loki) designed for 8-9k users on at a time(per realm)... but at peak we got 12-13k online = LAGGG AAH THE PAIN

Walk into hard dungeon... see monster, start hitting monster... LAGGGGGGG(up to 3mins lag spike) and once the spike is clear you\'re dead. rinse and repeat.

and Gravity isn\'t adding any more servers, because once it goes fully commercial they wont have all the freeloaders online and the servers will be back at the 8-9k mark again.

good graphics engine though...

Well these aren\'t MMORPG\'s but they are multiplayer.

MTA (http://gta3mta.tk) .  Yes that\'s right Multi Theft Auto.  It\'s a mod for GTA 3 for PC that allows many people to play at the same time.  It\'s in the process of being made though.  They have a beta version out now and its free.  Check it out.

Delta Force 2.  My bro got this game from a friend.  Never played the single player, but multiplayer is really fun.

Wulfram 2 (http://wulfram.com/) .  Futuristic multiplayer tank game.  Very fun and very addictive.

Realm Wars (http://realmwarsgame.com) .  I checked this game out and even dled it when the server was still up.  Great concept.  It\'s a fantasy first-person shooter.  (Orcs, Elves, Humans but UT style)

Well, Runescape;) will be going 3D in a little while. Or a long while...Anyhows, I just felt like mentioning that becasue there will still be free servers, even with the update.
Then again, PS will probably be a bit more complete sooner than RS, so either way, you have to wait.

I don\'t know of any -good- free ones.  I know of decent cheap ones, however.

Namely NexusTK (the kingdom of the winds)--a korean/fantasy/cheesy anime-based game set, of course, in ancient korea.

It had 4 base roles/paths: Rogue, Mage, Poet, Warrior
Each path has 4 subpaths, each devoted to different aspects (like a rogue could be a spy or a ranger, while a warrior could be a barbarian or a shogun, for instance).
The subpaths are player-controled, however, so you are selected based off of roleplaying ability not by merely doing something to appease a random NPC.

Now the graphics aren\'t too bad--reminiscent of Lunar: Silver Story and other side-view rpgs (I think they are nicer than runescape\'s even though runescape sports \"3D GRAPHIX@#$!\").

The community is VERY interesting. That is what I found most compelling about the game.  The game is set up so the player can take on jobs and specialities.  For instance, there is a team of \"judges\"--basically players selected by administrators (\"archons\") who act as policemen, literally arresting people who break laws listed by the kingdoms.  If you\'re arrested, you get sent to jail and are forced into typing sentences repeatedly as well as clicking bazillions of pop-ups to ensure that you aren\'t using a macro program.

That\'s just a miniscual tidbit of information about the community--the actual gameplay is pretty uneventful, however.

It revolves around a level system. The maximum level is 99, like many games.  However at 99, you can start using experience earned and convert it into HP and MP.
This causes the game to revolve around experience-garnering (aka \"hunting\").  The other aspect of the game would be pk-ing.

That was the highlight of the game, the creative pk-system.  You could pk in \"arenas\" or wilderness areas like as you would in diablo-- pk inside towns or heavily habitated areas was  non-existant.

That\'s not the creative part; the creative part was the \"carnage\" system.  The carnage was basically a mock-battle where 2 to 4 teams were selected by a panel of \"carnage hosts\" (who were players selected by archons for their job) who evened out teams based by strengths (level, HP/MP, general knowledge of player\'s skill). And basically, they wouuld then just let the two teams at it.

http://www.nexustk.com for more information.

And the screenshots on the site are outdated by 5 years.

Yeah that\'s the only game I can think of.

does anyone know where you actually sign up to play Mu Online?  I got that english client (at .7k/sec, feh on slow FTP\'s)  but i dont know where to get an account...hmm..

and i played nexusTK when it was in beta, sorta freaky, and there was only like this one thing to kill, so all the players were crowded around this big cow or bear or something and were all beating it with sticks... :-p  quite funny, and i\'m sure it\' a lot better now! :)

Yep that\'s fun, but blowing your enemy to pieces with the Panzerfaust is what I consider the funniest in the game :) the only dumb thing about it is that it takes about 1.6 seconds to fire and in that time, some of your stupid team mates might step in front of you  :P

Man not only do they play the games . They also make great games too. I recently been playing an MMORPG similar to Planeshift called Legend of Mir. Just after playing the game non stop for something like 3 months. I did some reserch and found out that the devs are Korean and the company was also Korean !!!

Know there games might not be seen on PCGAMER or other gaming mags but they sure are attracting alot of attention.

I\'m sure you italians and some of you europeans heard of the game because the tv channel that cover this game is actually Italian .... Hmm.... that also shows us that there is another country hitting the games arena hard lately .;)
