Why are the inhabitants of Yliakum underground? Was there an apocalypse, like in the book The City of Ember?

Long answer got to planeshift.it and read the setting material, short answer we were created or brought here (depending on our race) by the gods. There reason for being here is not necessarily what they tell us.

Yliakum is just really friggen huge, it's all the universe the local species ever knew

As prolix said, other races such as diaboli and klyros were brought there through portals

We assume that the path to the surface, if there is one, is practically impossible to traverse, and if there isn;t one, well, no one's inclined to spend a couple thousand years digging upwards just to see what's there
