Title: Kran Gender
Post by: Ilea on November 13, 2008, 03:08:39 pm
Hi,

I know that the Kran have no gender however is it against the rules or general storyline to say that that particular Kran has feminine qualities or something along that line? If the answer is yes, what would be the right way to phrase it?

Thanks.

i guess not, altough most of them grow up in kran villages, they possibly could live among other races' females and learn to behave like them.

So i guess your character can be more female than male.

BTW: in my opinion, Krans do NOT have feelings like love (remember, it's chemistry) so please DO NOT flirt ;)

Something called the Gemming.  And they don't need anyone but them selfs to reproduce.  :-X

It's asexual reproduction by consuming a lot in a short period of time.

If a Kran was raised by a family of another race, arguably it would learn to imitate aspects of that race such as emotions. I suppose it's that whole agrument of 'can a simulation ever be the real thing' but I believe as far as all outward signs are concerned a Kran could enjoy flirting

Another point to make, if a Kran could not feel love, it continues from there that it could also not feel compassion, empathy, it could have no like or dislike or preference, it would not feel any need to converse, interact, or do anything other then what is strictly necessary to continue it's own existence.

Well how do rocks reproduce then ???

They're not rocks so much as they are a kind of firm rubbery thing, i think I read somewhere. At least that's what jumps to mind when I hear 'silicon-based life form."

If they were made of actual rock, they would be near impossible to kill or injure. Also they probably wouldn't be able to move.

In MY opinion, we have to assume that Kran are bio-organisms the same as anything else, they have chemical bodily fluids and systems and etc, it's just a DIFFERENT chemical from the rest of the races.

We are carbon-based, and we are neither coal, nor diamond. Carbon is not even the main element in our body, quantitatively.
Just apply that to silicium the way you like.

About feelings, the only thing that proceeds from their physiology is that krans would not feel sexual attraction. It doesn't have to affect any other feeling. There can also be other types of attraction, alien to other races. There is room for imagination there.

And to answer the original question: kran feminine qualities don't make sense. Feminine/masculine qualities vary with species (and cultures), and belong to species with feminine/masculine individuals. A kran who mimics another race is  either joking, or insane. If he's a spy in disguise, he's just an idiot.

Nature vs. Nurture, then?  I don't see why someone would have to be insane or stupid for the monkey see/monkey do rule to apply.  Still, the term 'feminine qualities' in itself is pretty vague.  One would assume that if some Kran acted like men, others could act like women, but that's rather speculative.

They grow, they do not reproduce.
