Title: No Sound Intrepid 8.10 64 bit

Hi, I do not get any sound in game. I am running Ubuntu 8.10. Alsa, I have no other issues with sound in any other applications.

Here is the output:

no it's not that. it's that pulseaudio thingy gnome people wanted as default for distro shipping with it and  the fact ubuntu people in intrepid release  did even a worse disaster (other than adding it in the first place since hardy): now pulseaudio takes in hostage alsa all the time since bootup.
there are four ways to fix this.
1) wait next ps release and then use openal as output plugin for cs (as the lagging sound problems with it were fixed in last cs revisions)
2) kill pulseaudio
3) use pasuspend ./psclient (doesn't always work)
4) remove pulseaudio and setup all applications to use alsa which works way better

have you tried

$ sudo modprobe snd-pcm-oss && sudo cat 'snd-pcm-oss' >> /etc/modules

And then restarting the client? Also don't bother with esound or any form of sound daemon unless you have a really compelling reason to (like a crap sound card that doesn't support hardware mixing from multiple sources) sound daemons/servers are usually more trouble than they're worth for oridinary day-to-day desktop use.

Note: the first part loads the oss compatibility module that creates a /dev/dsp device in udev and the second makes sure that module is always loaded on boot.
