Dear Techs and people that know(hehe),
I was wondering if the requirements for playing the game wouldn\'t start decreasing? Like are they going to decrease with every patch? Because right now I\'m barely able to move without a 1-2 second lag between actions. Just wondering if you guys are planning on having the game requirements lowered, so those of us with lower end computers can enjoy the world of Planeshift?
-
Well, I think they are lowering the ram requirements.
-
I\'m sure system requirements will come down a bit as things are ironed out and neatened up.
But you have to bear in mind that because this is not a commercial project the developers don\'t really need to consider what the mass market wants or needs, they can focus on making Planeshift the best it can be and disregard, to a certain extent, things like compromising on features to try and make things work on low spec machines.
-
Right. Besides, even commercial S/W companies cannot afford wide target range anymore. It costs them too much to develop specific code for win32/linux, then S/W and H/W graphic rendering (on opengl, d3d, ... no, not glide anymore...). It also means more complex support and maintenance. If you add lower-end machines on top of that...
You could see this with id. I think they were one of the first gaming company to say \"well, now we don\'t publish s/w-rendered code anymore !\". Was it risky ? They are still there, and I don\'t know many people without a 3D card in their computer.
By the time PS will be more mature, your computer should normally beef up anyway. That is a corollary to Moore\'s and Darwin\'s laws (though I\'m not sure they worked together :D)
What I am very curious about is how PS will scale. Now, there is \"only\" one city of, let\'s say, medium size. Most of the buildings are empty (or are they full of diamonds - sometimes I wonder). And if you look down from the big tower, you can feel that there is much work to be done by the rendering engine so that you can admire the view of MB.
Will they do like in Morrowind for inside/outside ? And will the land be continuous ? We\'ll see...
But I\'m afraid the gain they could get with optimizations will be used to extend the features in PS. 8)

My machine\'s still a fairly feisty fella. But will I be ok with a 56k connection? Aye, there\'s the rub.

Too bad about the 56k modem, you havn\'t thought about buying a 128k modem? ;)
-
you\'ve got to remember that not everyone can afford/get a higher speed connection + the devs say that its not the 56k modems that cause lag its the low system specs. PS is actually pretty lag free according to them anyway
-
I\'ve got a 56k modem, and I notice both lag and low framerates. Lag is obvious when you\'re following another player around, and that player\'s position jumps whenever they change direction or speed. And no, this isn\'t low framerate -- it happens even in places where I\'m getting 60+ FPS.
-
well i have only played it for a very brief period of time, but in that time i did play it, there was no lag. Just a bit choppy from the inefficiency of the game.
Also you have to remember that the game is in ALPHA stage. And nobody should use an alpha version as if it was the final product.
But i\'m excited to see the final version! Imagine, no lag, efficient, quests to go on, items to collect..................
:)

Mmmmm... Final stage... I can wait :D

As a dev I can assure you that we will do everything we can to try to make the system requirements as minimal as possible. On the other hand we will also do everything we can to make the game as rich as possible (i.e. big worlds, lots of features, ...) so how this all ends up remains to be seen of course.
But in any case there are still lots of things on our todo list which should make performance better (i.e. level of detail, using fog to clip far away geometry, only loading part of the level that is needed, and so on).
Greetings,
