Title: In-game posters
Post by: Orgonwukh on December 05, 2008, 11:33:37 am
There is the possibility to pay for posters in-game by paying a representative from the octarchy.
See, for example:

http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=34134.msg393034#msg393034

I have several questions:
- Who do you have to contact OOCly? Who is the representative?
- What does it cost?
- What contents are allowed?
- How long do the posters remain?

- Who do you have to contact OOCly? Who is the representative? --  Any GM
- What does it cost?   --   Negotiable on quantity and timescale
- What contents are allowed?  --  IC content
- How long do the posters remain?  --  Negotiable but not too long

At the moment the only GM who can Lock posters in place is Kerol, but feel free to approach any of us to start negotiations, we will restrict the number at any one time so we don't get swamped and it is strictly first come first served.

I wonder how Yliakum society survives with such strict regulation of information.  I need to read more books in game to understand it.

I wouldn't say regulation of information is strict. You are free to walk around and hand leaflets out to people. It is just like the UK, Fly Posting is vandalism/Criminal Damage, and is illegal because you don't have permission from the owner of the thing you are glueing a poster to.

Is the UK is a great example of a free society?

I would like to remark that terms like "PvP" in a postertitle should be avoided. While I suppose it was merely a mistake to not have corrected it, walking around and noticing it at many prominent places was neither appearing to be IC nor was it supporting immersion.

In general however I like the idea.

But still "criminal people" are doing it.
There are "evildoers" who commit much worse crimes, than hanging up posters, so: Is there a chance Yliakum criminals can act the same way, will GMs support such vandalism that is?
Or will such a technical service be restricted to lawful chars/groupings?

Evildoers can still place posters, cant think off hand why one would, "Mass burgularization to take place in East Hydlaa, make sure you're not at home" but illegally posted flyers would be removed fairly quickly, there are guards patrolling the town constantly

Yliakum is not a 'free society'. Information is censored (more than you know) and actions are controlled. Game mechanics don't support this completely (or the second part at all) yet, but may eventually.

I originally got the idea after that halloween event. One of the GM's stuck a poster outside the tavern along with a Negate glyph and said it was to cure the haunting that had made everyone's day :)

So, great entrepreneur that I am, I went around and planted posters advertising my guild. Later I dropped into the #planeshift-gmtalk channel and said "Let's make this official. I'll hand over a bunch of tria to you guys, to signify paying the owners of the property I stuck the posters to." and the GM offered to make them unpickupable and we worked out a price (it was something like 30 circles to have 10 posters up for two weeks.)

I figure as part of a realistic world, having advertisements around the place works quite well :D

Then what's with all the cameras?

Criminals communicate in code.

so levels of cctv is now the sole indicator of a free society? I think not

If a criminal wants to communicate in code then there are more efficient ways "but illegally posted flyers would be removed fairly quickly"

So criminals just had to assign an apparently innocent one to have officials hang up any posters.

So who do we talk to if we want to deface posters with graffiti or whatnot? will that be allowed by the gms and what will it cost to have the guards look away while it is done should they happen by at an inconvenient time? ;) Think bilbous just found an excuse to gemmate. :)

I don't know what cctv is, but I was making a reference to surveillance.:P

Of course illegally posted flyers would be removed quickly.  But you said "Evildoers can still place posters, cant think off hand why one would".  And I'm providing you with a reason.

Thanks for all the explanations and ideas. Now where can I buy graffiti spray in game?

cctv = Closed Circuit Television. aka cameras.

Being constantly watched isn't a sole indicator of how 'free' a society is; what's done with that information decides that :)

Not that cameras are that relevant to PS. I don't know if Yliakum is supposed to have a inquisition and people wandering the streets looking for violations of information restrictions.
