Title: An Ideas on Nolthrirs
Post by: Hex on December 07, 2008, 04:46:45 pm
It would be pretty cool to see their legs change into like a Mermaid-esque form when they are underwater. This would complete their sort of "affinity" wth water.

Why? They have webbings. That's all they really need for swimming. What you mentioned would be like watching a dog turn into a fish when jumping in the water; it can still swim regardless.

What happens to their pants?

Ah but who can swim faster.. the dog or the fish?
This what I mean, turning into the Mermaid-esque form could give them an added bonus to their swim speed ^_^.. as for what happens to the pants.. well it's fantasy they could meld into the Tail to make coloured patterns depending on what you are wearing or disappear completely

If Nolthrirs have webbings like frogs for example... does a frog turn into a tadpole, when jumping into the water? :P

Dollars are not within the settings.

Lol... I can see this game isn't gonna kick off at all if it doesn't get a better community. You're all taking it WAY out of context. e.g Does a frog turn into a tadpole when submerged? No. Is a frog a fantasy creature? No. Is this a Fantasy Game? Yes
Take a look at WoW for example.. when Night Elves die they turn into a wisp form, and they have more speed than other races in wisp form. Turning Nolthrirs into a sort of Mermaid-esque creature when they are underwater could give them the upper hand at swimming over other races, which is obviously what they should have anyway.

I have a better idea for Nolthrirs.  How about every time they talk, they make gargling noises.

*gargle*-*gargle*-*gargle*-*gargle*-*gargle*

I don't think we should model ourselves after WoW.  They have a lot of trouble attracting players.

Lol.. which part is modelling after WoW? I used it as an example... justify that statement lol

Fantasy needs explanation to be decent. I'm sure they're aiming for high fanstasy, not sub-par fantasy. Realism should trump cool convienience. How would something like this come about?

It needs explanation to be decent, but it doesn't need explanation to be common.

Yes, but as Parallo stated, a good explanation is necessary. A feature such as this would presumably involve some kind of magic, for lack of any other explanation. And having either stronger or weaker (due to mana being "expended" by transformation) magical abilities than other races would contradict existing knowledge.

Consequently, Dermorians could turn into some barkish being to perfectly hide in forests, Klyros could turn into some dragon like beings able to fly, Enkis could go quadruped and Diabolis shapeshift into fire elementals - but honestly, such reminds me a bit of those antic asian manga fantasy thingies :-X

Gives a new meaning to the word Planeteer. Can i be heart ? I always imagined that power as ripping out the hearts of your foes and eating them in Mongolian fashion.

Parallo... Can we talk somewhere secluded ? Preferably sound proof.

What exactly is that meant to mean, pray tell?

He wants you bad.

Hex, the thing here is that PlaneShift struggles to keep a realistic atmosphere.
Quote from: www.planeshift.it, Story > Setting Overview
Our objective is to create a persistent world in a fantasy setting, in which every player will create a character and will be able to live, explore, and interact with maximum realism.
A Nolthrir magically growing a fish tail would not seem realistic; webbed feet are a way more realistic evolution (i.e. serves the same purpose without having to rely on improbable magical metamorphosis).
I hope that makes sense to you.

Hadn't considered that one. Which is surprising considering my arrogance.

More a beached whale actually, albeit one that magically grows legs when on land.

I can imagine that webbed feet are actually better than a fish tail. You have two of them which possibly makes you more flexible.

If it was a morphing magic - which it would have to be-, then it would have to be a the effect of a glyph. If it is the effect of a glyph, it is not a racial trait. If it is not a racial trait, any race with the exception of Kran (magic resistance) would be able to use it. So, possible, but you would also have to allow Merdwarves... *shudders*

Anyways, best to wait until we can swim before we start trying to figure out how to go faster.
