we never have and anyone can contribute code at any time so i dont really seen any advantage of it as the goals of the project are really only known by the high up devs.

The Google Summer of Code gives you more visibility... and might be a good idea to consider for any number of minor projects that have been desired by the team, but nobody had the time to implement... *shrugs*

For any students who want to take part in Google Summer of Code and help PlaneShift in some way, I believe that CrystalSpace has participated in GSoC before.

The advantage of Google Summer of Code is that you have a platform to advertise your project to developers and students who do not know it. The advantage for the developers and students themselves to work on a SoC project is that, if they do well, they can get money for it. From Google, of course. Often Google SoC developers keep working on "their" project after SoC ends. So participating in SoC can be very rewarding for a project. Whether to do it or not, is up to Talad I guess.
