Is there a game out there that....
- has a medieval setting
- has turn based pvp combat
- allows players to enter the game semi or fully leveled
- has emphasis on both playing a character and playing in character
- has excellent visuals
- is playable on linux
Just curious. Game may be completed or in beta.

As far as I know Planeshift is the only one that satisfies all of these. The concept of playing in character and the level of the starting character may be present in a few MUDs, but no nice visuals of course. I say no, but please, prove me wrong because I'd like to find it too.

Planeshift is not a turn based game, it's rather real time.
Zanzibar's third criterion may be very difficult to satisfy for most games though.

Zanzibar, nice post with clear critera.
Maybe make it? I am sure there are open source pieces out there that with enough work can be made to make that. let me know if you get it playable. :sorcerer:

Being that I am also looking for a new game I think the idea of making one is interesting. If we were to ask Talad about it I do believe it is a very very difficult thing to do though. Anyone have any other suggestions of a great role play game?

Shining Force reminded me of heroes of might and magic series:

It wasn't technically turn based, but it was slow enough and responsive enough that it felt like a turn based game. Here's a later version:

Even though they're very different games, something that bothered me about both of them was the level of micromanagement. With heroes of might and magic, each individual unit was capable of leveling up. Compare that to Warcraft III when you only have to worry about your heroes leveling. Might and magic I liked more, but at times it felt like a shooter, and there was still a lot of micromanagement when it came to the equips for each of your party members. One thing that was cool about might and magic though was that you would meet new characters at taverns who you could either accept into your party or reject - some would join you for free, while others would charge for their services.

Have you played Lords of Magic? It's a very old game, but something that revived the then dying "turn based strategy games".

I've definitely played that game! I don't know when though, but I remember the noises the fighters make, as well as how you would choose a Chaos or Law or whatever guy at the start. I think it's possible that I've played Lords of Magic but not Heroes of Might and Magic, this would all have been a long time ago.

I loved Might and Magic IX. I was quite young and found it in a drawer somewhere. Great find. The Heros series is a bit crap really. I think I still have a copy of Lords of Magic as well. It is a fun game but it got irritating quickly.

DccNiTghtmare is a project to make a 3d realtime RPG with battles in turns schema. The game will have a comic, sarcastic and critic story in a academic enviroment with a non-linear story/drama.
