Official Planeshift Promotional Poster Design Contest.
In order to expand the player base on a budget of precisely zero, we are going to need the players to help us.
We have long talked about the possibility of coming up with some kind of promotional poster that individuals could post at schools, public libraries, community centers, lamp posts, the internet, and EVERYWHERE else.
In order to accomplish this we are going to ask the community to engage in a poster design contest!
Things the poster must include:
-Art: It must have original graphics related to planeshift (yes you may borrow art in game to help you make your poster.)
-Design: The poster must be well designed and attractive to the eye, both in the art and in the text. . .
This link: http://www.planeshift.it/
___________________________________________________________________
Here is some possible text, do whatever you want however to make it catchy and make people want to look it up. Disregard this text entirely if you want!
Description: Planeshift is a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying game based on an open source engine. The art and writing content is managed by a charitable foundation whose goal is to produce an ad-free, fee-free, educational online roleplaying game for players all over the world.
How to Play: Planeshift is in an open alpha and many people play full time on our servers. Play along with a wonderful international community here:
http://www.planeshift.it/
How to Help: Planeshift is also seeking talented people to help design and influence the game's final outcome. If you wish to donate some time apply here:
http://www.planeshift.it/recruitment.html
The rules are fairly simple: Each contestant is allowed to make 3 entries for the contest and the contest will be judged by the leaders of the art team who will select 5 entries to submit to Talad for final approval. Final entries will submitted under the ABC license. Talad will select first, second, and third prize, a runner-up, and an honorable mention.
Rewards: At Talad's discretion, the First, Second, and third, prizes will become the official planeshift promotional posters. Prizes for runners up and honorable mention TBD.

I've learned a good number of things in PS that were on a test that I had to take :)
-
How big physically can we expect this poster to be, and what dpi?
-
I suppose it should be printable by people at home, but scalable for those who are more ambitious in their promotion of PS.
You tell me.
-
Where will it be viewed? Online? Or at physical locations?
-
If 300 dpi and the poster is supposed to be 24"x36", then 7200x10800px ;D
Although i'm sure tuxide would like it bigger ;p
-
A 600dpi image at 8.5"x11" is about 3300x5500px, give or take. A scaled-down 300dpi page would be acceptable for anything up to about 11x17 without significant loss, full-size 24x36 posters would either need to be scaled up from the 600dpi or designed separately (at no less than 150, 300 being ideal).
It's important to note that a printed image requires a much higher resolution than a computer screen would, so sizing something for paper usually will require much higher pixel dimensions than something meant to be viewed on-screen.
*Disclaimer: the above is spoken not as a PS art developer, but as someone who's worked in a copy center for three and a half cumulative years.
-
Kieve is correct, when you bring things to print you want the file to have twice the resolution of the print.
So we're talking posters? Not official banners for websites and forums?

Is there a deadline?
-
You might want two versions, RGB for typical inkjet computer printers and CMYK for commercial offset printing in case someone wants to go wild putting up posters. Of course if someone wants to put up full size posters they won't be printing them on a standard printer.
-
I think this is a great idea. Xillix did you ever get any submissions? When will the winners be announced? Will you post the winning posters?
-
My summer is too busy so I can't really help out. But I really doubt any posters would be up in schools. You'd get beaten for it, no joke... Internet is probably the way to go.
-
How about making desktops instead of posters? It's more environmentally friendly and images don't need to be of such high resolution as for print. Just my two trias.
-
Because nobody has seriously used uberscreenshot; this may be an opportunity to show what Crystal Space can do.

That's terribly ironic, bugplug not doing what it's supposed to do!

That may well be in schools.
Do make large posters also if possible. Knowing your target audience is part of the promotional campaign, folks. When I was in college, I had to present a project for a Virtual Reality class and used PlaneShift and a custom map for it.
I would target universities with Computer Science classes to gather not only additional players interested in a free MMORPGs, but also potential developers.
-
I'd be interested in a promotional poster, the criteria I have for it are as follows:
# Must be black and white (no color printer available for me here)
# Should include infomation for players as well as information for ongoing dev prospects (I'm at an IT college, so am pretty sure we can catch both, players and devs here)
## Info for dev prospects should include departments with a brief description of them and whatever kind of devs are needed (php coders, c++ coders, etc etc)
# Should be DIN A4 format
# If possible information should be in English and in German
# Additionally a foldable brochure could be added with additional information (So I can pin the poster at the message board and put some brochures below it for everyone to take and read)
Thanks in advance.

??? Hello i am an art student and i love to draw and i make posters for our local library sometimes, i really think this is my kind of thing to do and i really want to do some artwork for PlaneShift but i dont no who to talk to about it. Can someone please tell me how i can help? :sweatdrop:
-
We just want a damned poster folks, a poster, something you post.
background images for computers are OK but if someone is already in your room you've probably told them about PlaneShift.
If you are getting beaten up at school for any reason, including PS, please go to the authorities.
-
So, I'm guessing there isn't a deadline, considering I asked back in march and no one answered. *grumble*
Are there any entries yet?
I started on one, it isn't too fancy. Shall I post a link to it when it's done here or something?
-
Yes. The idea is to have something people can print and post in their area.
-
here is mine...now where is yours?

Make sure to spell PlaneShift with a capital S, and use Helvetica (instead of Arial) if possible.
-
Art and type not intended to be final. A concept...

-
If I may make a suggestion - also include a link to the forums, besides the main PS page and the recruitment page. It might be useful to folks who have initial install problems.
-
wow verden! I really like yours!! \\o//

Thank you... OK, so lacking any other feedback... I created a tri-fold pamphlet in black & white and used copy from the website. Lets see what people think. Easy to do a color version. Easy to adapt this style to a poster if anyone likes it. Not sure if the questions I included make sense, but most of the information is in here.

i like the layout tons, its very simple and nice, try two color schemes, one more typical, but also try a garish red and yellow thing, could look good.
-
I like it but some color would be nice, but I say blue and gold or blue and silver. Real informative though. What's the pic on it? Wood? Hmmm, the pamphlet talks from the stand point of someone spawning in hydlaa, that would be confusing for players starting as krans and enkis and it should probably mention the tutorial too... might as well give them a heads up. ;D
-
I like it. The black and white seems fine to me. I noticed that Gugrontid wasn't mentioned. Also, some of the other information seemed a bit outdated. But it could just be me.
Anyways, looks great!
-
The picture is from CVS theme for the game. Its the picture in the background of the color sketch I posted of a poster a bit before. I wanted to see if anyone said no to using it, as I think its a great piece of artwork but it is part of the public project and not PlaneShift the game. I had to edit some of the text since it was outdated. I hear there is a new website coming soon, so not sure if there is much of a point to writing or compiling new copy. The color version would just have the graphic in color on it. I don't have enough time to come up with various duotone combinations. But thanks...
-
Revive! we need posters and posters posted!
Take a camera pic of your poster posted and post it here! I know you can do it people!
-
Ooohh I might try :)
Is it possible though to get .png files of some of the concept art of the models for the various races? I have an idea I would like to do with them but instead of making a messy render I'll just ask ^_^
If not, I can work around that.
-
Great Idea. Im no artist though....
-
We have a lot of great artists that aren't looking at this. To me it's quite important to get this done.
-
great artist
Irishman gets to work.
-
Verden people are asking for the source to your poster to give it a better location.
-
lilura hooks up jumper cables to the thread!
http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4247/psposter2copyl.jpg Blue web addresses
http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/2392/psposter2black.jpg Black web addresses
right click on the picture....save picture as... insert into a word/works/whatever macs use document stretch to a nice size press print
it looks ok in black and white if you have to
-
Sorry I hadn't noticed this post. I have to dig back out those files when I get back to my office next week.
-
Actually i need the use of the private message system and i could not find a better place to share this one.
Nothing promotional about it, but you can call it a poster at least if you like.
(http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/8863/yahh.jpg) (http://img64.imageshack.us/i/yahh.jpg/)
I hope the input is welcome anyway. I'll try to come up with something more valid soon :innocent:

Sorry if everything is kind of big, the program I use made it hard to judge size XD
-
Looks good. The "Download Now" is probably not best for a physical poster maybe. :beta:

Heheh, maybe not XD
I'll give it another go later.

Yahh takes his 10 apples, ready to make some pie ...
hot damn mate that's good stuff! changing it to 'promotional' is a sinch. just put the PS logo on a bottom corner, and maybe put a title at the bottom (or top?) sayin' 'HAMMERWIELDER' in big, fancy, ol' english letters (or whatever suitable).
i can really see a series of posters turning out with the same theme, introducing each of the races (with backgrounds and borders associated with the respective races). Shame you're only allowed 3 in this contest..though if this display won, I would definitely encourage continuing the series! Encouraged whether it wins or loses, really.
-
Yahh: This could have been a good submission to the "Portrait contest" as well.
-
@Yahh: I noticed you cast a spell effect before screenshotting your picture. At first I thought it was photoshopped on, then I noticed the alpha issue is still visible. I would suggest adding such effects afterward, before applying the filters to make the poster the way it is.
Other than that, it is a marvellous piece of art. At the same time as I critique it, I do also think that being 'honest' and using real ingame effects. A beautiful poster nonetheless.
-
Yahh makes a bow; Thanks for all compliments !
@Xoel : no spell casting there, go have a look upstairs Laanx temple and ya will understand where that comes from ;)
-
Ah, I thought it was a Crystal Way spell like Dazzling Light.
