now that I've got the system up and running I'm having trouble on tutorial, once I get to the iron ore melting process nothing happens after a few minutes, am I forgetting to do anything, I put the ore on the furnace and wait

Wait a good 5 minutes.  If still nothing happens then something is probably wrong.  It does take awhile but it shouldn't take longer than a minute or so.

you are placing it in the furnace via right click and not dropping it in the furnace right?

she meant if you opened the furnace window and placed it there and not dropped it on the 3d mesh of the furnace
