Title: Time is gold (well... platinum) and is spent uselessly
Post by: Davigetto on April 20, 2009, 11:23:47 pm
Hello everyone,

Me and an in-game friend have the intention to contribute (as contributors) to the PS project and we are very usual players of PS. However, as gamers of PS and finding it as our source of fun, we like:

1- Roleplaying, of course
2- Why not? TRIA to improve our character.

Also, we are people with some principles regarding the tria:

1- Time is gold (well... platinum).
2- Spending time in mining is boring (it is the best way to earn money, however it is a useless waist of time because while mining RP is not involved and I do nothing interesting but pressing a key to dig).

So I wondered... we are players of PS and we like it, but we lose our fun and our time in mining. Then, why not make something more interesting? I reckon that, for example, 2 hours of intensive platinum mining is around 50.000 tria. Why not exchange those 2 hours of mining for 2 hours of contributing in PS and wining the same amount of money in-game (that can be given to our characters by a GM or developer). Those 2 hours will benefit everyone and they will be more pleasant and rewarding, and (who knows) more people could be interested in contributing in the game and PS will grow up rapidly!

I don't know if this sort of policy is already applied, but that was my idea. More closer game-related people could take part in the development, and considering the huge amount of bored-miners in Yliakum... muahahaha

Most people who start developing for the game are beyond the point where they care how much gold their characters have. Most of the times they also didn't care about it before. And there's also the point about unfairness, each to his own, etc.

I don't see it happening ;)

Evidently :P

Motivation is a strong point... if you reward the efforts of someone he will be happier and will work better. This is the first and main point of an enterprise director/boss who wants to be successful.

Another problem is that only about 1% (my guess) of the players has the skills to contribute to the game as a dev. Theoretically you could reward people for posting (non-duplicate) bugs to the bugtracker, but handing out and managing these rewards also costs time, so I doubt if it will speed up the development of the game.

Very true, but the devs are already in a position that if they wished so they could spawn as much tria and items as they would like, set all their stats to the maximum level and walk around like a super hero. But they never do because it is rather pointless. The only way we now can reward them is by giving them smileys at the forums:   \\o// . Well, maybe they accept other forms of rewards too...

By the way, long long ago and for a short period of time (http://web.archive.org/web/20010305034431/http://www.planeshift.it/helpus_recruit.html) PS advertised special in game positions for devs:

As a contributor you will benefit of many advantages in the game: you can have special character with a defined social position in Yliakum society, free magical items or weapons, a permanent house and more...

We have many badasses working for free as it is.

If someone can't see the merit in working with the team for the sake of the work and learning that deving provides in itself, they'll hardly be up to the standards of our current contributors.

The simple majority of devs are former players.

Engine is an exception but phd AI specialists and successful coders willing to give countless hours coding after doing so all day at work/school don't grow on trees.

If you love the game (or the ideal behind it however underwhelming the current result is), helping it to blossom into a fully featured rpg mmo should be reward enough.

I fully disagree. In the hours I spend mining, I always try to make it interesting, whether it is discussing politics or chatting, or even getting drunk and creating a new form of money sacrificial worship in the hopes of increasing luck and prosperity. I also have developed a gambling habit in the time I spent mining so that I end up not making much money from my invested time. :sweatdrop:

I took this idea as meaning...instead of mining for tria...how about spending the time contributing to PS....in a manner such as increases roleplay, player interaction, or players coming up with player type events..to contribute to the in-game environment and getting tria for that. Instead of everyone hanging at the mines.

aarnir has offered a few iron temple masses and no one showed up...perhaps all were at the plat mine.  hmmm...perhaps a 50,000 tria door prize for the first person to come in!  (somewhat kidding...aarnir doesn't have 50,000 tria, cause he's yet to trek to the mines}

I shall keep trying none the less....

but just maybe....hmmm bribery :detective: ;D

For as much as that is worth. Policy towards players is not to favor anyone, hard-working contributors in the community who have been here for years, or casual two week players. Everyone is equal.

There's been a lot of talk about making certain guilds official and working them into the city government.  Working hard to contribute to RP was going to be one of the criteria for consideration to my knowledge.
