Title: Ideas for GM RP events
Post by: Joale on May 22, 2009, 12:26:45 am
[I think I am posting in the right area, please move me if I am not]

I have some ideas for, what I think to be, pretty good GM events, Xopal encouraged me to post them on the forums, so here are a few, [and please post your own ideas as well!]

Trazok retirement party- Trazok has been the Oja smith for, a , well, very long time, and I htink a retirement party in Oja would be a good idea. AS for loose ends, tehre are allot, I thought he could stay in the game, just not the smith, and you could still use him for the quests he is involved in, just get the smith quests from the new smith.

Yliakum knowledge contest- People could put thier knowledge of the land to the test in this contest. I was thinking like the game 'levels' when you anwser one right, and first, you can either knock another player out, or move to the 2nd level, and there could be three levels. You can't knock out players above you, and if your on the 2nd or 3rd levels, you just get knocked down one, not out.

Hydlaa Ball- Have a hydlaa dance with decorations and such, could be fun.

League of Commerce opening ceremony- opps, was that outloud, well, GM's listening... I could do wanders with a few tents, boxes, tables... and some support..

[I have more, just some examples, please, post your own!]

Do you really want to tell Trasok he is retiring? I wouldn't... might wind up with a smith's hammer in my head.

Well, it wouldn't be our decision, it would be Trazoks.

While the overall concept is okay, we won't be retiring Trasok at this time - we're still writing the story of which he is a great part of.

Joale, nice idea for a thread.

So far I've enjoyed all the GM/Settings events I have participated in.

My fun idea would be a "It's on fire!" event.

Using a GM command, several GMs or dev-accounters are 'buried' under, say, Kada-Els.

(they could just be buried around a random house, I'm sure players would join in just as much... having Kada's on fire would REALLY motivate them though :P )

These people are buried just enough that they cannot be seen. They will need a mana count high enough to keep 'Flame Spire' rolling for a good amount of time. They start, one at a time, to cast the spell, hence setting the place on fire

A central GM account holder will play Allelia/home-owner and will cry out for help using /shout.

This character says "The only way we can save the building is to get <X> buckets of water!" (I have seen an appropriate item around, 100-200 should be enough to make it some work to put out the fire).

A few guards are present, they will ICly be the ones fighting the fire (as Hydlaa has no known fire department).

GMs place <X> buckets full of water at various fountains throughout Hydlaa and Winch before the event. The players must pick up these buckets, remembering every fountain, and bring them back to the Guards, trading them in and the Guards will keep a tally as they 'fight the fire'. Perhaps a certain guard will be the one they must trade to and he counts them off and the others just perform /me tosses a bucket on the fire in desperation etc.

When the fire is put out the event is over and the characters involved are thanked and rewarded for their help. I don't know if a similar thing has been done before, but this thread seems to be the place to put it. :)

^^ \\o// I really like that idea +2 Akaiddo

I had a fairly similar Idea only more along the lines of "natural disasters" Something like
Someone turns on the heavy rain.Amb then somewhere{most likely Ojavada due to its Geography} gets flooded and players have to rush in to dig a channel for the water to return to the river(Finally a use for those shovels  ;D)
No real Graphic would suit this,But its good RP  :beta:

I still have a suggestion for a kernel of a GM event. I built this already years ago.

Today, unfortunately, the game mechanics make this idea nearly impossible. It would work again if we could jump 5% higher.

Joale, I applaud your efforts here in this post. It is refreshing to hear someone taking the initiative and having a go. I would advice you to perhaps plan and run a few events yourself. You can post notice of them on this board and go from there. If you need any advice or just need someone to bounce ideas off feel free to contact me in game or send me a message here. I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks Tazen, and yes, I am planning the league of Commerce opening ceremony, it will be held near the Laanx temple, and am planning on giving away free refreshments, and having a short speech about the guild. But, I think it would be funner if I could get some GM help with a game I wanted to play. I don't knwo about anyone else, but I am a christian, and my favorite time of year is christmas time, I was thinking we could play a game similar to dirty santa... here are the rules (and I would need GM help for this to work)

Anyone who wants to play, (and hey! I got the idea, I want to play too!), donates, I don't know, 10k to the guild, and then they are allowed to play, and I probably shouldn't assume you all know how to play, here is how it works.

All the players are gathered around in a circle, a bunch of locked chests. (the number of chests is = the number of players, so everybody wins) all names are thrown in a hat, and they are all drawn, that is the order you will go in. The first player will walk up and pick a chest to open, he will take the item out of that chest, and show everybody what it is. The next person can either steal the gift from the 1st person, or go open a new one, if they decide to steal from another person, that person has to go open a new one, or steal one. , the game ends when they are all opened. And the item can only be stolen 3 times before it is out of circulation, otherwise, the item would be stolen over and over if it was the best. This also means there is an advantage to being in the front and the back.

Anyway, I would need help with getting the chests, and some good gifts for the event, as well, as any tents and such they would be genorous enough to offer.

If thats not possible, I'm sure I will think of something to replace it.

I don't think we will be able to help out much with the presents as it would present a conflict of interest, however if you can get your idea organized and presented in script form (step by step in detail of how you wish the event to run) and supply a time frame along with an estimated number of players you can confirm will take part I will ask you to poke me in game and I will look it over and see if there is anything we can do to help you (post fryers around Yliakum and perhaps organize that tent).
Do the script first, and let's go from there. :)

Joale, I think you could manage that presents-event with sacks or wooden crates. Either keep them close enough to players so they can be picked up (if you are worried about them being stolen) or keep them guarded (I`m pretty sure items can`t be taken from a guarded container). Just give all the crates to a Kran, have kra drop them nearby and keep all guarded.

If you want help, and you`re planning the event on the Temple green...you could always contact the Priests of Laanx guild ;)

Akkaido, that fire idea is outstanding! I`m sure if the GMs ran it it could be done perfectly...but if they can`t help out (I understand that it is general GM policy not to get involved in player-organised events. I`ve asked a few times) you could always manage it in cooperation with some other players (plus a bit of dual-clienting with flaming alts).

The fun of events is the unexpected content.

Writing ideas here in public might already be a spoiler for them...

Would the developers (especially the Settings and GM teams) prefer an anonymous way to submit suggestions?

Or are they already certain that they don't need any suggestions, because they are brilliant enough for the next years? (No offense - just one question among several.)

Tadano: it was an idea for a GM event (hence in this thread).

I'm sure if they didn't want to run the event themselves they would be prepared to /slide a few of us just underground a bit around a GH we own.

Some of the ideas here are very good, but I agree with LigH that this isn't the right place to put up your thoughts as events are meant to be unexpected. If you know the result and way to do an event, it is no fun. Posting here will only make your brilliant ideas worthless as there will be very less chance that the GM/Settings team will do an event about which the citizen know. I would advice you to write the event script nicely, and send it to a GM.

Or are they already certain that they don't need any suggestions, because they are brilliant enough for the next years? (No offense - just one question among several.)

We are constantly doing work on a newer event and we always welcome suggestions from players, and now I will surely be waiting for some suggestions from you.  :)

During the 2 years or so I was a GM helping with Player led events was not allowed and as far as I know this policy hasn't been changed. The main reason was to avoid accusations of favouritism and increasing an already heavy workload, namely to avoid the first one would have to help every player that requested help, it would also invoke the competition clause, whereby a GM assisted player event would directly compete with a non-assisted event.
Q: What can a GM not do for me?

It is the goal of the GM team to help a player with any possible situation as long as:

  • It would not constitute favoritism or compete with activities conducted by players in the game.
For example, GMs will not give out items unless part of an RP quest or event. We cannot give items upon request for every player in the game, so it is unfair to do it for a few. This would also interfere with player economy and the worth of items.

As an aside I would also recommend making suggestions in PM to either GM's or Settings, not much fun if everyone already knows the storyline
